7 1 THE FOURTH U.S. NAVY SHIP TO BE NAMED IN HONOR OF ADMIRAL DAVID GLASGOW FARRAGUT SHlP'S HISTORY The first in a class of modernized missile ships, FARRAGUT is one of the world's largest and most versatile destroyer-type ships. FARRAGUT was constructed by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation in Quincy, Massachusetts and was commissioned on December 10, 1960 in Boston. She was designated a Destroyer Leader, DLG-6. The ship departed in the fall of 1961 for her first deployment to Northern Europe, and after serving two months with Sixth fleet in the Mediterranean, returned home in March 1962. In April 1962, FARRAGUT was the first ship on the scene of American Astronaut Scott Carpenter's splash down. FARRAGUT commenced modernization in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in May 1968 and completed final trials and Post Availability Shakedown in the Boston Naval Shipyard in March 1971. As the first modernized DLG, FARRAGUT possesed the most up to date anti-air warfare capability in the Navy's arsenal. Her main armament is a TERRIER surface-to-air missile twin mount located aft. She is also equipped with anti-submarine rockets, triple torpedo tubes on both sides and a 5 !54 caliber rapid fire gun mount forward. These systems can be controlled individually or in coordination by means of the Navy Tactical Data System QNTDSJ, a computerized installation for direction of the ship's weapons systems. FARRAGUT was nominated as the Atlantic Fleet pilot ship for the 1200 pound boiler improvement program and entered Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in October 1973. The overhaul was completed in January 1975. On 1 July 1975, the ship's hull number was changed to DDG-37, when the Navy dropped the classification of Destroyer Leader. FARRAGUT deployed to Northern Europe in September 1975. While deployed she visited France, Belgium, Holland, and Great Britain and participated in Exercise OCEAN SAFARI. She returned home in December 1975. On July 4th, 1976, FARRAGUT took part in our Bicentennial Celebration in New York Harbor. - FARRAGUT deployed to the Mediterranean with the U.S. Navy's Sixth Fleet in January of 1977 and returned to Norfolk, Virginia, her homeport, on August 1st, 1977. 3
