Because of her influence and friendship, we, the Senior Class of 1964 dedicate our edition of the FAR ECHOES to Mrs. Betty Sue Miller, teacher, advisor, and friend. 4 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE My congratulations to each of you as you reach an important milestone in your life. This milestone marks the end of one era and the beginning of another. I trust that in the past era you have gain- ed the knowledge and experience necessary to the development of the abundant life in the new one. As you leave Farmer High School you will go into many different avenues of life. I hope that you have come to realize that your education is not complete. Everything you ever do will be a part of the great educational process. I challenge you to always try to make the most of every opportunity you have. I have been with you a very short while, but I have already come to think of you as My Seniors. This year with you has been a personal pleasure to me and I shall always cherish the memory of my asso- ciation with you. And now as you are about to depart from us, each to go his separate way, I sincerely wish much suc- cess to each of you in every worthy project you undertake. The joy's we've shared, the friends who've cared forever linger on. The memories of days gone by, of those both good and bad Will stay with us through coming years, and leave us all so sad. Our parents, teachers, and our friends have helped us day by day. I We wish to thank you for your help through all our high school days. Our goals are high, the paths are long, the future seems so bright, Please help us God, to do our best, as we depart tonight. Song writer, Marlene Briles CLASS HISTORY Four years ago the Senior Class of 1964 entered high school. We probably did not look like high school stu- dents, but it did not take long for us to get accustomed to our new adventure. Our Freshman advisors were Miss Loberta McNeill and Mr. Talmadge Williams. We elected our class officers: Ronda Hunt, President; Linda Gallimore, Vice President; Barbara Wood, Secretary; and Phil Poole, Treasurer. We enjoyed several parties during our Freshman year. Before we knew it, the year was completed and we were Sophomores. Our Sophomore advisors were Miss Judith Aycock and Mrs. Mary Watson. Our class officers were Curvey Brower, President; Cheryl Poole, Vice President; Hal Hodgin, Secretary; Glenda Sprinkle, Treasurer; and Linda Brown and Dianne McDowell, Reporters. Those receiving the honor of being tapped into the Beta Club were: Rebecca Wall, Ronda Hunt, Marlene Briles, Linda Gallimore, Mary Quick, and Shirley Hughes. Our activities that year included a trip to the State Fair. In 1962 we received the title of Juniors, which made us feel very proud. Our advisors were Mrs. Betty Sue Miller and Mr. Charles Williard. Our class officers were Johnny Kearns, President; Shirley Hughes, Vice President; Ronda Hunt, Secretary; Cheryl Poole, Treasurer; and Barbara Wood, Reporter. Johnny Kearns received the honor of being tapped into the Beta Club. Of course, we were looking forward to ordering our class rings, which we would receive after becoming Seniors. We began preparation for the banquet which took place in the National Guard Armory in Asheboro. We chose blue and white as our class colors, and the white rose as our flower. Our motto is: All Roads Worth taking Lead Up Hill. We were very proud to help with commencement because we felt we were nearing our goal as Seniors. Those chosen as Marshals were Rebecca Wall and Johnny Kearns, Co-Chiefs; other marshals were Ronda Hunt, Marlene Briles, Linda Gallimore, and Shirley Hughes. We were very sorry to see the Seniors leave but we were happy to take their places. And then in 1963 we returned as Seniors. It did not take us very long to realize the duties we had to take over. We were all proud of our class rings because we felt we had earned wearing them. Our advisors were Mrs. Katharine Clarke and Mr. Robert Allen. Our class officers were Kenneth Hunt, President; Geraldene Cagle, Vice President; Dianne McDowell, Secretary; Eddie Morris, Treasurer; and Ronda Hunt and Rebecca Wall, Reporters. Our most important task was to publish the best Far Echoes ever. The annual staff was selected and they got down to work. Plans were made for the selling of magazines and for our trip to Washington. For twelve years we have shared the joys and sorrows that came to us. We are very grateful to our teachers, parents, and friends who have helped us reach our goal. As we part, each in his own direction, may we always be led by the Almighty God, and be able to look back at the many memories of our school years at Farmer High School. Our scrapbooks are open, and what do they hold? Some memories of iron, some memories of gold. Dances and ballgames, our life in a whirl, Some certain boy, or that special girl. All that lies behind us--the Banquet, the teams Those past things a memory--our future, a dream. And though it hold boredom, or joy, or woe, Our life is before us--we've mires yet to go. None of this would have been possible without the capable leadership of Mr. Charles Williard. Coach Williard holds the respect of all the students of Farmer High School. His tolerance, his desire to win, his consistent encouragement, and his steady emotions are some of the reasons for our respect for him. The boys say He doesn't let up even though we're winning, and that he works with the individuals. His ability to joke at the proper time and work at the proper time impresses the boys. Because of his outstanding qualities as a coach and as a person, the Sports Section of this an- nual is dedicated to Mr. Charles Williard. 44 HOMECOMING ROYALTY Brenda Johnson 1st Runner-Up Barbara Wood Queen Senior Attendants Jean White Ronda Hunt Cheryl Poole I f 45 Court Vickie Hill Tawana Walker Delores Lewis BOYS’ BASKETBALL TEAM CO-CAPTAINS COACH Mr. Charles Williard Phil Poole FORWARD Roy Yates FORWARD Charles Parker GUARD Kenneth Hunt FORWARD Curvey Brower GUARD GIRLS’ BASKETBALL TEAM CO-CAPTAINS COACH Mrs. Verna Russ Amy Thornburg FORWARD Jayne Yates GUARD Jean White FORWARD FARMER GIRLS’ CONFERENCE SCORES 1964 Ramseur Franklinville Liberty Grays Chapel Seagrove Ramseur Coleridge Franklinville Liberty Coleridge Grays Chapel Seagrove Farmer Farmer Farmer Farmer Farmer Farmer Farmer Farmer Farmer Farmer Farmer Farmer FARMER BOYS CONFERENCE SCORES 1964 Farmer 84 Ramseur 62 Farmer 88 Franklinville 46 Farmer 65 Liberty 64 Farmer 77 Grays Chapel 44 Farmer 75 Seagrove 58 Farmer 67 Ramseur 60 Farmer 97 Coleridge 75 Farmer 78 Franklinville 48 Farmer 55 Liberty 63 Farmer 116 Coleridge 76 Farmer 68 Grays Chapel 28 Farmer 70 Seagrove 59 CHEERLEADERS Seniors 52 Advisor Mrs. Jane Caudle BASEBALL TEAM Coach—Mr. Charles Williard 53 MONOGRAM CLUB President; Curvey Brower Advisor; Charles Williard SCOREKEEPERS Larry Lassiter Kenneth Lambeth Eddie Walker r 5ft GREAT OA r ELEMENTARY FACULTY Mrs, Myrtle Bailey - Grade 8 Mrs. R. ARTICLE V We, the Senior Class of Nineteen Hundred and Sixty-Four of Farmer High School, do declare this to be our last will and testament. Class of '64 Eddie Morris Testator SENIOR PROPHECY As I was walking through the woods one day, I saw a funny looking machine. I decided to investigate. Well, I investigated! Before I knew what was happening I was in the thing and no way to get out! All of my classmates and I seemed to be in an entirely different world. I pushed a button and wonders plus nightmares happened. Here's what was happening. . . Eddie Hough is now making headlines in the Tabernacle Journal because he is running for Mayor of Taber- nacle. Just east of Spivey's Meat Market, Marlene Briles now has her own Pig Ranch. Her foreman is Donald Lof- lin. Eddie Morris is now employed by Ray Fox driving a new Chevelle. Curvey Brower has finally made a hit with Ronda and her family. He is now co-owner of Wham, Hunt, and Brower Construction Company. Barbara Swink now has her own Beauty Culture School. Her main topic of discussion is How to Keep the Figure Trim and Slim. Betty McQueen is now surfing at Parker's Mill. Keith Morris is now running his own boarding house doing all the cooking and housework--this is an ideal vo- cation for him since he was such an A+ student in Home Economics. Marsha and Baxter Surratt have now retired and are now living in one of the many New Hope Mansions. Wiley Hurley now has his own Shooting Reserve in the New Hope Township. While riding through Tabernacle Community the eye-catcher, of all things, is Kearns’ Speedway which is named in honor of Irvin Kearns. Carol Batten and Brenda Kearns are now touring the U.S.A. demonstrating the modern walk. Dianne McDowell is now modeling for Vogue giving all the clothes that short and petite look. Rebecca Wall missed the last question on the $64,000 Challenge--this was the question--On what date is the 4th of July? Linda Pierce has just recovered from the shock of having quintuplets--two girls, two boys, and one monkey. Geraldean Cagle is now raising her own family of girls to have a basketball team. Cheryl Poole now has to run her own dairy farm since she did not marry a millionaire. Her specialty is milk- ing cows. Shirley Hughes is now having to use her daddy’s chicken eggs for bowling balls at Hughes' Bowling Alley. Levon Hopkins is now employed by the New Fiope Yankees--as assistant water boy. Helen Harris is now modeling the Cover Girl Make-Up. But, the only trouble is that the title speaks the truth--it really does cover her up. Vickie Hunt has become such an expert at cooking that she is now advertising for Betty Crocker. If you need any work just call Barbara Wood's Dairy Farm. It is progressing very nicely. She has 5 cows, 5 pigs, and 5 horses, but you know how Mother Nature Works. Linda Coleman is now becoming very independent--she can take a bath by herself. Judy Robbins is now raising her own little nest of Robbins --singing Bye, Bye Birdie. Brenda Johnson is now running her own Do Good Club. She teaches to do good as a do-gooder should. Jean White is now running her own business school--teaching people how to mind their own business. David Pickett, now running his own independent Worm Ranch, is counting, smelling, and selling over 2,000 worms a day. Bobby Ridge is now employed by Holman and Moody driving a 1970 Jet-Back and he is really flying low. His wife, Myrtle, is now his new relief driver. Kenneth Hunt who has long been remembered for his quotation, Man is a Dog's Best Friend is now in charge of Tabernacle Dogspital. Ralph McDowell is now running a More Store, the more he gets the more he wants. Roberta Goins is in Garren Town running her own Beauty Salon. Charles Parker and Phil Poole are now playing for the Harlem Globe Trotters--trotting from one end of the court to the other. Geneva Saunders finally had to quit working at the 100 store because she got too big to get behind the candy counter. Mary Quick finally got up enough nerve to jump over the blazing candle stick. Ruth Sawyer is now employed by Sawyer's Meat Packing Plant writing books on how to cure hogs. Larry Sexton now has his own private garage in Jackson's Creek. Sandra Lanier and her husband have no trouble in keeping their six children clothed even if it is in under- clothes--her husband works at Stedman’s. Brenda Small is now making oodles and gobs of money modeling new hair do's--Tonnette for little girls by Toni. Linda Gallimore is now serving her sentence of 30 days in the Randolph County Jail for racing and driving un- der the influence--it doesn't say under the influence of what. Johnny Kearns is the jail keeper. Carolyn Hogan and Lou Dean Newsome are still in Africa awaiting the return of their husbands from Tarzan's Army. Joe Delk is now unemployed. He was laid off for mattress making. I finally figured out what kind of machine I was in. It was a Time Machine. But, I thank my lucky stars I pushed another button and that it was the right way out. But, I’ll have to admit it was fun while it lasted! Brenda Johnson Joe Delk SENIOR STATISTICS CAROL BATTEN Dramatics Club 3; 4-H 1,2.
