ordheim Wins Singles Titlesg Golfers, Netters Take State Marilyn Barge's golfers and Candis Pendergast' tennis players established themselves early in the season as being contenders for the re- spective state titles and then proceeded to do just that. Bargels golfers took state in near freezing weather after having taken a fourth place finish in the EDC meet because of injuries. Aside from the EDC, the golfers placed first in all meets and were led by sen- iors Julie Foss and Marsha Gibb. Suzy Wenz and Karen John- son will be returning. On the tennis courts the state meet , after being postponed three times, was won by South's once beaten team. The Bruins beat Bismarck 9-6 for the title and junior Sarah Jordheim established a record by taking both the region and state singles titles. The girls tennis team had an excellent season as this was the first time that a South team has ever taken the EDC, region and state. Marilyn Barge Candis Pendergast eighty-two South High's Junior Varsity members are S. Haakenson, C. Dillard, L. Halliday, J. Holland and K, Hentges. The JV had a 4-l record for the season losing to Moorhead. Senior Marsha Gibb, one of the most consistent golfers, injured a back muscle during the EDC tournament but she was able to play on the state championship golf team. . E' , . S

Football Team Has 6-3 Record In Hertel's Initial Season South, led by the backfield combination of halfback Jeff Huguelet and fullback Steve Backer, and on defense by Jay Weyers and Rolf Haar- stad, finished with the best record since 1973. South was 6-3 overall and finished third in the EDC with a 4-2. Not knowing what to expect from South's football team at the beginning of the sea- son, first year head coach Dale Hertel was very pleased with the 6-3 mark and the team's will to win. Losing their first game to Moorhead 24-O, South came back and defeated Rugby 17-3, guided by quarterback Jeff Stoen and sophomore kicker Kurt Stellrecht. The Bruins then lost to Shanley 56-22. South's narrow win over Jamestown set off a five game winning streak that ended when cross- town rival North defeated them 42-6 in the final game of the season. This loss ruined their wildcard berth hopes. Dale Heftel eighty-four X Sophomore kicker Kurt Stellrecht boots in the extra point attempt in South's homecoming win over the Grand Forks Central Redskins at NDSU's Dacotah Field.
