Somcthing's Always Happening Student Life-something South has had a lot of during the past ten years. Activities have changed, things have been added or taken away, but always something has been happening. South's first year of existence-1967-68, saw students celebrating with a senior swim party, Sadie Hawkins, a Norwegian Independence Day, All-night party and a faculty-sponsored party to honor the graduating class. Georgia Goff reigned over Homecoming festivities which included the game and the Garden of Eden dance at which the Unbelievable Uglies played. Fall Festival, a carnival-like project of South's various clubs success. Moonlight and Roses the 1968 prom and Charley's 1968. The year and the first couples prom April 29. Fargo defeated Wahpeton and Mary Gunkelman was crowned queen for the Way Down Southi' homecoming. Damon Runyon's 1950's play Guys and Dolls was presented November 18-22, and Wibberly and Sergel's The Mouse That Roared was presented as the spring play. February 1-6 was a busy Snow Week in 1971. Pep Club won the snow sculpture contest and shared first with National Honor Society in the tricycle race. The first annual snow king and queen were electediDick Rohla and Ronda Iversl and Christopher played at the dance on Friday, April 21. South faculty members played the Harlem Diplomats in a benefit game. The game ended in a 71-71 tie after the faculty was given 30 points handicap at halftime. Other entertainment for students included the Sadie tasia was the North-South prom theme. Christo-A pher played the dance music. speakers were guest of South at throughout the year. Special Courses Grow at South Personalized Education, under Don Smaltz, had 42 students enrolled in the growing program. Instructors for the courses were Melinda Dicola, Gordon Hegre, Don Smaltz, Priscilla Strutz, Pam Swanson and Gloria Thompson. Jet, run by Roger Olgaard, gave seniors the opportunity to see if they would enjoy being a teacher. There are 15 students from South involved in the local program. The students teach 1-12 graders. They get V2 credit for the course. The school had 20 students now directly involved in the Fargo- Moorhead Community Service Pro- gram. Students do a large variety of volunteer work. Some help in the elementary schools as tutors while others do volunteer work in the area hospitals and elderly homes. Qualified students earn from V2 to one full credit .per year. 4 W.. I7 if X 4. representing 12 countries, performed for South students in late September. A first in South homecomings was tried following this when a male legs contest was held, the young man with the sexiest legs was frosh Steve Borgen. The County Fair fit right in with the Down on the Farm theme. Patty Cleven was crowned, South beat Jamestown 19-6 and Stonehenge played at the Barn Dance . Mini-courses were held for the first time this year. 111 courses were offered and the students really enjoyed the change of pace. Doug Berglund was crowned King of Sadie Hawkins Day. Brian Donahue and Jeff Galt acted as Marryin' Sams . 180 couples attended the dance at which Spring Water Legend played. Mary Chase's comedy Harvey was presented and later Drama Club presented the musical fantasy Brigadoon . The Concert Choir present- ed the first opera ever done at South, Giancarlo Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors . Came to Dinner . Sadie Hawkins Day saw Bruce Wambheim crowned as king and Stoney Blooze was the dance band. Student Council sponsored a Rock-a-Thon in order to raise money to purchase much needed bike racks and picnic tables. Twenty 3-person teams participated in the 36 hour rocking chair marathon. A parade, slave day, coronation, the football game and the Last Chance Dance were all part of the Wild, Wild West homecoming. Juniors won the float contest and Billie Lamb was crowned homecoming queen. Stu- dents were required to attend six out of the approximately 100 courses offered in the 1975 mini-courses program. Fifties Week included what students claimed to be the best pep fest of the year, it included many contests and the most popular phone-booth stuffing contest lfreshmen won with 20 personsl. The sock hop on Friday featured Johnny Holm . Rain and snow did not dampen the spirits of the couples who danced to won the snow sculpture contest and Jane Meyer were crowned Snow Week. The annual fest and a dance.
