Senior Ralph Manley swims the 100 yard a team record in the butterfly and swam Butterfly. Manley, in his best season, set on the record breaking 200 yard relay. South's record holding 200 yard relay and R. Manley established a new pool team of G. Burdick, S. Malm, E. Larson and team record during the season. Malm Directs Bruin Swimmers To Third Place State Finish Senior Scott Malm broke records in the 200 yard individual medley l2:04.2l and the 100 yard backstroke l:55.1l to help lead South to a third place finish in the state meet. He also was a member of the record setting 200 yard med- ley relay team 11:46.01 with Gage Burdick, Ralph Manley and Eric Larson. Larson also won the 50 freestyle in :23.0. Coach Tom Manley's swimmers broke 12 records during the course of the season. Malm broke records in the 200 yard freestyle, the 200 IM and the 100 yard backstroke lteam and pooll. Larson set records in the 50 and 100 yard freestyles while Manley and Tom Bach- meier set records in the 100 butterfly and the 500 freestyle respectively. Junior Richard I-laarstad set the pace in diving while the 200 yard relay team of Malm, Burdick, Manley and Larson and the 400 yard freestyle team of Manley, Larson, Malm and C. Junior Karen Hegre executes one of her moves on the balance beam. Karen in addition to her three letters in gymnastics has been on the swimming team for three years also. Many girls are in junior high. irl mnasts .Defeat Midgets To Reclaim State Title South's girls gymnastics team reclaim- ed the state title from Dickinson by edging the Midgets 210.85 to 207.02. The Bruins captured the second through fifth place honors in the all- around competition. Seventh-grader Sue Schraufek was second in all-around with 70. 10 points, followed by eighth-grader Stacey Simle, freshman Jane Vanyo and Karen Hegre finished fifth with a 67.20 score. Eighth-grader Julie Bergo placed tenth in all-around with a 62.25 score. A Dickinson girl was first. South took individual firsts in three of the five events. Eighth-grader Mo Day scored 27.80 to win the vaulting. Simle captured the bars and Schraufek won the balance beam. Bars and the floor exercise were the top events for South.
