Miss lrene Schjeldahl, Commercial Department ln this rapidly changing world where the boys are being called into service to protect their country and the girls are being trained to support themselves, is it any wonder that the commercial department is becoming more popular? Every day the government's demand for people with knowledge of these subjects is increasing. Almost daily, clerical and stenographic examinations are given to till federal positions. The department offers bookkeeping, shorthand, typing, commercial law, salesmanf ship, economic geography, and secretarial practice. In addition to the teachers listed above. the department includes George Kester, who teaches commercial law. This year, cofopcrative education under the direction of Tore Allegrezza has been introduced. Clickety clack comes echoing back Balancing the budget. Ancient inan is known hy his artiliacts. Our own civilization is noted for its Ngadgetsu. When songs and stories and languages have heen lost, handicraft in some form is always left lvehind. Ancient man more often exf pressed himself in concrete l'its of handiwork than in alastraet poems and liallads. Applied art is one of the most useful forms of selffexpression. Courses in art, wood' working, metalwork, mechanical drawing, printing, cooking, and sewing are olliered. A girl can design a dress, decorate the material, and then sew it. Wheii completed, she wears an attractive sample of her initiative, sense of color and design, and skill. Beauty is only skin deep. Woiiieii are judged hy the way in which they dress and feed themselves and their families. A man, too. must lfe able to design and produce attractive things in Wood and metal for his home. With the knowledge gained in manual training, many a man has made his home a trihute to his artistic skill with wood and metal. Iv1an's ahility to adapt himself to his environment and to adapt his environment to himself depends to a great extent upon his skill at handicraft. Moderii times call for draftsmen, mechanics, dieticians, Welders, and other types of skilled workers and technicians. The industrial arts department is expanding rapidly at the present time. George Korol swings a mean compass and Beverly Kjorlaug sews a fine seam. Fifzcm V25 .si .441 f 'f 1i!Lf,V,,.5' , ... .ELL U . . ' ifelf. if 1 ' ff Q --Nl-43-.2 A,...-f-...V
