Fewer still are those who do not make some use of their high school mathematics or science. From the engineer to the accountf ant, all have a common appreciation of their early training. Bugs, test tuhes, and electromagnets represent the successive steps taken hy soph' omores, juniors, and seniors through the realm of science. Lines, solids. hinomials. and cosines are the stumliling lilocks on the royal road to mathematics. The average person in an unrelated profession usually does not recognize the conf nection hetween math or science and his everyday life. Take, for instance, the case ofthe hurried individual who cuts a corner, trampling underfoot his neighhoris grass. Little realizing it, he is making direct use ot a geometric principle laid down hy some forgotten Hellene or Egyptian that One side of a triangle is less than the sum of the other two. Then there is the instance of the disappointed hilliard player who is ever forgetting that The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection. Nlathematics and the other related sciences form the hackhone of defense today and of peacetime accomplishment in happier eras. Ever increasing is the demand for skilled technicians, engineers, and chemists to keep the wheels of industry turning and the wheel of progress steadily moving.
