Yet there are many citizens who do not fully understand some of these momentous hapf penings. mostly for want ot' knowledge concerning the hackground ot' world conditions. A good remedy tor this is to study history, whose purpose is to otier a clearer compref hension of presentfday events hy a thorough study of the past. Coincidence, or not, incoming sophomores tirst take up the study ofthe world in its green stages: from there they steadily progress through the ages as juniors and seniors, tinally halting on the threshold ot- the modern world. By this time the student will have covered everything from the cave men down to the presentfday dictators. The widespread social and economic changes of the past few years have created re' newed interest in conditions atfecting society, The Social Science department otliers excellent outlets for this interest in presenting facts and tigures on these allfimportant topics. Fewer still are those who do not make some use of their high school mathematics or science. From the engineer to the accountf ant, all have a common appreciation of their early training. Bugs, test tuhes, and electromagnets represent the successive steps taken hy soph' omores, juniors, and seniors through the realm of science. Lines, solids. hinomials. and cosines are the stumliling lilocks on the royal road to mathematics. The average person in an unrelated profession usually does not recognize the conf nection hetween math or science and his everyday life. Take, for instance, the case ofthe hurried individual who cuts a corner, trampling underfoot his neighhoris grass. Little realizing it, he is making direct use ot a geometric principle laid down hy some forgotten Hellene or Egyptian that One side of a triangle is less than the sum of the other two. Then there is the instance of the disappointed hilliard player who is ever forgetting that The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection. Nlathematics and the other related sciences form the hackhone of defense today and of peacetime accomplishment in happier eras. Ever increasing is the demand for skilled technicians, engineers, and chemists to keep the wheels of industry turning and the wheel of progress steadily moving.
