He lived in Annapolis, Maryland and attended the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating 8 June, 1960. Lieutenant Commander Byrne's first sea tour was as First Lieutenant aboard the USS PRESTON QDD-7953. In February of 1963, he graduated from the Naval Destroyer School at Newport, Rhode Island. Lieutenant Commander Byrne has also served aboard the USS COURTNEY KDE-10213 as Operations Officer and aboard the USS LUZERNE COUNTY QLST-9021 as Commanding Officer. He was also the Executive Officer on the USS O'CALLAHAN KDE-10511. Prior to reporting to USS FANNING IDE-10761 for dut C d' Off' y as omman 1ng ICCT, Lieutenant Commander Byrne served as Chief Staff Officer for Commander Destroyer Squadron Seventeen. Commandin
