QQ gig r FCREWGRD CAREY SHEARER Editor -in -Chief BETTY PARMER Assistant Editor This is Our Life as we have spent it here at Fannett-Metal. We have enjoyed each hour of study, activity, and sports as we developed ideals, standards, character, and a greater appreciation for our American way of life, Our joys, our sorrows, our triumphs, and our problems have all been a part of our growing to a greater maturity, The 1961 Tuscaroran has recorded many of the tangible facts of our six years at Fannett-Metal, but only you, my classmates, can fully appreciate their true value. May you always be proud to identify yourself with the class of 61 . Surely if the years after graduation are as rewarding as these have been, we shall be able to take our places in this unsettled world and make a valuable contribution to these challenging times, This is Our Life has given us a mission-- to give a little more to life than we receive, Then and only then shall we be better citizens for a world that is to be earth -bound no longer, v C arey Shearer

Robert W. Kochenour, Ed. D, Columbia University To the Class of 1961: There are three observations that come to mind upon consideration of your theme, First, it seems to me that in choosing This Is Our Life you have shown a desirable maturity. A short time ago Clifton Fadiman, writing in the SATURDAY REVIEW, stated that present-day youth do not know who they are or where they are going, In taking time from your busy schedule to take stock you have indicated that this is not true of all youth, Secondly, you seem to realize that no man is an island and that cooperative effort is necessary in modern-day America, This is evidenced by the use of the plural form our . And, thirdly, you demonstrate a determination toDO rather than merely drift, This is quite important, for as Thomas Jefferson said, It is the manner and spirit of a people who preserve a republic in vigor. At present there are in use mass media which tend to produce a certain uniformity of product, This can, of course, be worthwhile in the dissemination ofa common culture, in the elimination of dialects, and in the elimination of those differences of dress that once separated people of varying socio-economic back- grounds, But it behooves us to develop each individual to his fullest, This development must not be limited to the intellectually elite. lt goes without saying that gifted persons must be developed to their fullest, but this development must not be at the expense of those of ordinary abilities, Doctor .Tohn H, Fisher, Dean of Teachers College, Columbia University, has said, it is the quality of the ordinary citizen which ultimately determines the courseand destiny of the nation. You are the first class to have spent all si.x of your secondary years in the present building, It is my hope that you have profited from your experiences here, that you have learned your lessons well, and that you will each apply the knowledge and skills you have learned to the betterment of yourselves, your families, and YOUI' C01'l'11'1'11lHiTY. To do anything less is to betray your school as well as yourselves. Very sincerely, ,fAj4KXfV4fw Robert W. Kochenour, Ed, D, Supervising Principal
