Mr Robert Kochenour, B S M A Shrppensbur State Teachers College Columbra Unrversrty To the Class of 1959 Lets butld a stalrway to the stars a lovely starrway to the stars Thus begms a romantrc song of a nostalgrc yesteryear In those days, shootmg or the moon was considered the herght of folly, and the statrway to the stars, hc musmg of a dreamer Today, no one serrously doubts that we should shoot for thc moon or indeed that we shall h1t rt It IS merely a questxon of when and, above everythmg else, by whom wrll the moon be shot at and hrt The starrway to the stars appears to be a toss up between a three stage rocket and a gulded mrssrle Suddenly there has been a reawakenmg of lnt8I'6St rn science and mathematrcs A few years ago we had to fight to keep algebra and plane geometry ln the hrgh school program Now, suddenly we hear a cry for more and more science and mathe matrcs rn the school curriculum Even the agrrcultural colleges are demandmg a full program of scrence and at least one year of al ebra and one of plane geometry In the lean years of yesterday those of us who stu led the mtrlcacles of the German V 2 and tts Amerxcan successors were looked upon as real squares It rs, of course now common knowledge that for several years we have had mrsslles that are far superror to the preset V 2 of the Germans Some of them are controlled by radio, utllrzrng knowledge of the hyperbola Others are truly gulded by the stars Still others utllrze a homlng devrce that enables them to follow planes or other ll1lSSll6S, oyertakmg and destroymg them and mathematics and the practical applrcatton of these branches of learmng How ever, I would submrt that each of us should re read the Declaratron of Independence the Constitution of the Umted States and at least one authorltatly e book on Amerrcan history and one on ancient history Then, we should crltrcally read a book recently published called The Ugly Amertcan Let us then ask what has made Amerlca great Has our Amerrcan dream of a hlgh standard of lrvmg and an equal opportunity for each Amerrcan been an rdle one? Or, have we somehow enabled many an m drvtdual to rise from humble begtnnmgs on the starrway to the stars and achreve a better lrfe for hrs having chmbedg Is there not a lesson for us to learn regarding the xmportance of the study of language and socral studres7 Would the world have been better or worse lf men hke Wmston Churchill had not l1ved7 The answers to the above questrons are, of course, almost obvrous to a student of history They are certamly pertment in these days of psychologrcal COIIHICI Let us then burld and chmb the lxteral starrway to the stars, but let us not m our mterest rn the physxcal exploratron of outer space forget that much of a man s progress has been made by men who have caught a glimpse of the figuratrve starrway to the stars and made the world a better place rn which to lrve The wealth of this country rs great enough for us to achleve both Let us, then, strive for them and assrgn to each the relattve worth rt deserves We are lrvmg rn a truly marvelous era It rs my fondest hope that each of you will lrve lxfe to the fullest and m so dorng help others bulld a starrway to the stars Very smcerely, Robert W Kochenour, Supervtsmg Prmcrpal Page 6 . . ., . . 4 s 1 - . .
