Halmaufh, Maine .714 Memzfriam The Crest wishes to dedicate this page to the memory ot Mrs. Mar- garet Martin, who passed away on March 24, 1961. Mrs. Martin will be long remembered for her many hours ot work on the Falmouth School Committee and tor her interest in the Child and Family Service Board, the Children's Hospital Visiting Board, and the Nurses' Advisory Committee of the Maine Medical Center School ot Nursing. Still o'er these scenes my mem'ry wakes, And fondly broods with miser carey' Time but th' impression stronger makes, As streams their channels deeper wear. -Robert Burns Zfreword ANN HALEY, Ed tor Ch ef This edition of The Crest is a permanent record of the school year 1960-1961. In a few years when you find this book hidden away on a high shelf, you will take it down and dust it off. As you go through the pages and look at the pictures, memories of the wonderful times at Fal- mouth High School will once more come to life. You will be reminded of a dance you went to, or a basketball game we won, or even an examina- tion on which you received a particularly good rank. But most important, the classmates and faculty, whom you have all but forgotten, will once more be there smiling at you. You will find yourself wondering whether the girl who sat beside you in English class is still having trouble with her spelling, or whether your favorite faculty member is in good' health. . With this purpose we publish the 1961 Crest -that these very im- portant years of your life will never be forgotten. Your editor,. Your assistant ed itor, . CAROLYN GATES, Asst. Editor XT! Kffxr . Record, treasurer. STANDING: D. Verrill, D. Vining, A. Cossar, M. Haley. Our Seuiar year This is it-our senior year. All the rest of our years of education we-re in prep- aration for this, our final year, at Falmouth High School. lt was up to us to make the very best we can of it. In the past, when the-re were disappointments, perhap-s because the team had a poor season, or our ranks weren't quite what they should have been, or that certain someone- went to the Prom with somebody e-lse-there wa-s always the next year to look forward to. But at the beginning of this year there was no next year to offer us consolation. We had to do all we could to make this year the best in the history of Falmouth High and to make our class the best yet. We had many fields in which we could excel, if we did our best. There were all the sports offered at Falmouth, there was the chance to bring our ranks up to high standa-rds, there was further competitio-n with other schools in debating and Scie-nce Fair, and there were the many other extra-curricular activities in our own school, such as diramatics and the other clubs and organizatio-ns. Also, we tried to help the unde-rclassmen with their problems a-nd to be worthy of their respect. We like to think that we succeeded in most of these ways, for as the time for us to graduate draws near, we want to be well remembered by our friends and our faculty. Our high school years certainly rank among the best of our lives, a-nd our biggest regret concerning them is that they went so quickly. L57 X ,,. 0 Wiffgl 6 Eg lin: ga - 52, V 41 W1 ' wx! STANDING: Sylvia Adams, Douglas Sanders, Roger Bowdoin, Eleanor York. Our junior year Well we Juniors did it! Even though we were warned that it was to be our most difficult year, we came through with waving banners. ln the fall we receive-d our fervently anticipated class rings, and we settled down to an active and success- I ful term. During the winter, we attended the numerous basketball games,-the boys and girls' swimming meets, and many other school events. M-iclyears came and went, leaving us with mixed feelings. We found, being mere babes on the first stepping stone of the upperclassman regime, that we could now pa-rticipate fully in almost any activity. Such extra- curriculars as varsity basketball, baseball, swimming, track, band, chorus, varsity cheerleading, French Club, Latin Club, Dramatics, The Skipper and The Crest staffs, Science Fair, National Honor Society, and Student Council threw the-ir doors wide open for us to take full advantage of their enticements. The date of the all important Junior Prom was set, and everyone worked to make our prom the most beautiful and smoothest yet. -After this official farewell to the Seniors from our class, came the final ranks, graduation, and last chapel. During our Junior year we became older, wiser, and more mature. Although we had many good times and happy moments, we hope that the experiences shared in our Junior year will help to make us the best Seniors yet at Fa-lmou-th. g Ss 'X ex- V 'FIS' Q-.Sim R six if X rw, Z F -'LC X 'PPNXF' fi--Q ff X if f 'F Wk' . -- A Q XX N-Q X - -A X --J Nr - X xx S XX X X N S .Q -N. The newne-ss ot F.H.S. has completely worn off. We have adiusted to the increase in homework and have learned how to get those extra proiects done. Having gained this experience by trial and error, we plant to correct all the mistakes that we made a year ago. We sophomores did not expect the second year ot high school to differ so greatly from the first. Now we have a comple-tely new outlook on school life. We are eligible for certain clubs. Our chances ot making a varsity team are much better. We await the selection ot class rings with great anxiety, and, of course, we move one more step up in the lunch line. We are now an active part of Falmouth High School. Our representation in sports is excellent, and a respectable number of students take part in all extra- curricular activitie-s. The maiority ot our class is on solid ground in their studies. We are well on our way to the goal for which all classes strive, the participation of each and every student in some school attair and the acquiring of a high- grad-e education. D P' xl sf' ga W' gk. The tension mounts among the candidates as each speech is heard and e-ach candle is lit. Finally, the big moment arrives, our principal reads the list, and a few fortunate seniors and iuniors become members. It is an honor never to be forgotten. STUDENT COUNCIL In 1959 Falmouth High for the first time carried on for electing its members a miniature po- litical campaign. The eight elected members work with the faculty to solve any problems that arise during the year. The Student Council sponsors the Freshman Reception, sells cookies at recess, and refresh- ments at home basketball games. The money made is put into the general fund and used to better the school. - FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA The piano beats out a tune and from it come the strains of Future Teachers of America, Future Leaders of our Youth, accompanied by self-interpreted soprano and thinly-spread bass. Although the tune may sound threadbare and the piano stumbling, yet one thing is prevalent throughout- spirit! It is this spirit which prompts our Future Teachers of America Club to care for children at grade school affairs, to work on every school proiect that comes along, and to help element- ary teachers in their classrooms. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA The Future Homemakers of America was reactivated at Falmouth High School this year. The main purposes of this organization are to promote a growing appreciation of the ioys and sat- isfactions of homemaking, to work for good home and family life for all, and to further interests in Home Economics. The club has enioyed a most active and successful year. FRENCH CLUB One of the centers of culture at F.H.S. is its Cercle Francais. This club will stop at nothing to help its members get the most out of French language and customs, even to exploring the pos- sibilities of a French exchange student at Falmouth. The club was honored by the presence of two exchange students, Francoise et Martine, ata tea one afternoon this year. LATIN CLUB Togaed beauties lounging on gym mats-munching finest foods-vino from collapsed cafeteria tables-this scene is only one of many hilarious occasions at which Latin Club members prove that Latin is not a dead language. The club has also helped in many school proiects. DEBATING AND NATIONAL FORENSIC LEAGUE Debating offers a real challenge to compe-te with students from other schools on an intellectual level. In addition to the preparation involved, is the experience of traveling all over New Eng- land-University of Maine, Bates, University of New Hampshire, Emerson, and Boston University -making the work even more worthwhile. The National Forensic League, an honor society associated with debating, encourages members to earn honorary degrees toward the Degree of Distinction. Thus far one stude-nt at Falmouth has achieved this recognition. DRAMATICS The Dramatics Club at Falmouth High is one of the busiest clubs in school. With the beginning of each new year comes an amazing increase in membership. Those who actually perform on stage in our three-act play and the annual one-act plays are familiar to us all. But very little is heard about the maiority of the club's members, who work hard back stage to make each play the succe-ss we have come to look for. He-refs to both the actors and those silent members of the Dramatics Club. THE SKIPPER The Skippe-r publishes the news of Falmouth High School-four times a year, Thanksgiving, Christ- mas, Easte-r, and graduation. It contains sports events, the gossip of the school, activities of each class, and jokes. First, students must write out and draw the material for the paper, then others must print many, many copies on the fluid duplicator. Each student on The Skipper staff spends hours to make the school newspape-r a success. SECRETARIES-OFFICE AND TEACHERS' Several of the girls who are taking the Business Education Course are selected in their iunior and senior years to work in the school office and as secretaries to the teachers. Running er- rands, taking message-s to classrooms, collecting attendance slips, and answering telephone calls are all part ofthe daily office routine. At the beginning of the school year each teacher is assigned a secretary. Typing out master copies, duplicating thousands of sheets, alphabetizing book report list, and writing letters are only a small part of the work of a teacher's secretary. BAN D Falmouth High SchooI's band is bigger and better than ever this year, playing at rallies and as- semblies and even exchanging concerts. The bigge-st news about the band in 1961 is that, thanks to the Mothers' Music Club, its membe-rs sported brand new uniforms while marching in The annual Memorial Day Parade! CHORUS The chorus is again becoming an active o-rganization in school affairs, for example, the excel- lent Valentine Concert. This year the members participated in several special assemblies and ar- ranged for exchange conce-rts with neighboring schools in the spring. SAFETY CLUB The F.H.S. Safety Club promotes safe driving habits and road courtesy. Some of its projects have been directing traffic and parking at school functions and sponsoring assemblies on safe driving. In general The group favorably affects our whole community. SCIENCE FAIR Each year Falmouth students enter the Regional Science Fair, then the winners go on to the State Fair, where students from all over the state enter exhibits on such topics as mice, plants, atoms, and electricity. Last year Falmouth as usual brought home first-second-and third-place wins. LIBRARIANS Do you have a pass? Do you know your book is overdue? These are iust two of the prob- Iems a student librarian must face every day. New books come and all books go, but the librar- ian must keep track of each one. VARSITY CLUB This year has seen the birth of the Varsity Club at Falmouth High School. Its membership is open to any student earning the varsity F. The group was organized to give recognition to letter winners and to encourage greater partic.ipation in athletics. CAMERA CLUB For its members the Falmouth High Camera Club, organized in October, provides darkroom facilities, photo chemicals, and other photo supplies. At present activity is limited to developing, printing, and home portraitures. The next step is acquiring an enlarger. CONCERT GROUP Many Falmouth students spend one morning a week listening to grand opera, concertos, sym- phonies, authentic whaling chanteys, and Israeli folk songs. Everyone considers the concert hour one ofthe pleasant interludes of the week. KITCHEN CREW An excellent hot lunch program in Falmouth is headed by Mrs. Lillian Pope who-se headquar- ters are at the high school. Many students assist the capable cooks in serving the nutritious lunches in a systematic manner. BUS DRIVERS AND CUSTODIANS Bus drivers' schedules and custodians' duties are well organized by Mr. Sampson Plummer, head custodian at F.H.S. for years! By now he knows well how to cope with a hundred or more additional riders and a few more classrooms to be cared for. His staff now includes nine efficient workers! Their live-ly cheers helped to keep the school spirit high. Now we shout, Three cheers for Falmouth! One cheer is for The hard working players and their coach, one for the cheerlead- e-rs, and one for the loyal supporters of our team. BOYS' BASKETBALL Constant practice, tedious plays, and early hours-all These are a pa-rt of varsity basketball, but There are rewards, a-lso. The pleasure of working with the coach, The friendship of The other playe-rs, and the thrill of proving that F.H.S. has a fine team. From the J.V.'s come next year's stars. All that hard drill, which the boys put in, helps build ou-r future teams. The boys on the J.V. play Their hearts out for the glorious moment when they make varsity. SWIMMI NG-GIRLS AN D BOYS Swimming is a sport in which the girls at Falmouth High School plan To excel. The mermaids exercise their muscles every Monday afternoon for about two months before the Triple-C Meet and for about two months before the Southwestern Maine Meet. The girls also take swimming lessons every Thursday afternoon to practice their techniques. Good luck to the girls' swimming team and their try for the Southwestern Maine trophy! What a meet! What a team! Thtis yea-r Falmouth's boys' swimming team Took all the honors. The stands were literally packed, and The- fans sweaTed it out with everyone shouting con- tinually fo-r the team. Our boys, of course were the real heroes of the me-et, as they braved iit- tery nerves and rugged competition to p-lace first,or second, or both in a-lmost every event. Each event was spectacular in some way, but the senior relay was a real thrill for Falmouth fans, as our swimmers placed first with a new record of 50.1 seconds. BASEBALL Sports a-t F.H.S. a-re now on an upward climb. The T960 baseball season was truly .an opti- mistic one. It was predicted that the team would finish the season in next to last place, but we closed with 7 wins and 3 losses, .conquering all teams twice except those of Yarmouth, Cape, and Freeport. We caused Yarmouth's only defeat, a ii-T0 victory for us. We have lost almost no players from the '60 team, consequently, the '61 season promises to be a real Triumph for urs. Let's support the te-am all the way, 'the Triple Ccrown is ours. SOFTBALL Have you ever watched The boys' baseball game? Have you cheered for the boys'? Well, have you ever wondered how the girls' softball team is doing? Last year they won mo-re games than they have in the previous two yea-rs, but these girls still need the support and push from the school to make them champ-ions. The girls start p-racticing early in the spring. They take the-ir balls, bats, and gloves o-ut into the wet, iuiicy field. This smears the team up quite a bit, but mud makes a good facial. At 3:30 they come in from practice, wet and fatigued, but raring To go the next day. Their scho-ol spirit is great. Let's give a great big cheer for the up-coming softball champions ofthe Triple C! TRACK Falmouth High School's track team, consisting of muscle and speed, captured another Triple C victory. lt was not lust ability which led the Yachtsmen to victory, the participants of this spring sport showed excellent team spirit and the great desire to win. The track team showed their greatest strength in the 220-yard dash, 440-yard dash, 880-yard dash, mile run, senior relay, freshmen-sophomore relay, iavelin, high lumps, and pole vault. Another championship team is being built. CROSS-COUNTRY Falmouth High School's never-say-die cross-country team iust missed capturing anothe-r Triple C victory. The squad won all of its league meets this fall and must be highly congratulated for beating unbeatable Gorham High School. GIRLS' BASKETBALL Almost any afternoon, take a walk down by the gym and see the girls learning the newest tech- niques and the latest plays. Coach works both the varsity and iunior varsity teams strenuously, and when the day is over, they feel like going home to bed. The girls deserve a trophy for their hard work, and they are trying hard to get one. Good luck, girls. MAJO RETT ES This year the high-stepping strutters of Falmouth High School kept us in line. We had a right to be proud, as we watched them leading the band in the Memorial Day Parade, and performing at the basketball games. Flipping their batons easily in the air, they kept perfect step in the-ir syncopated routines. All these qualities plus their snappy blue and gold uniforms make us realize the fine iob our maiorettes are doing. SOCCER Two years ago Falmouth High School initiated soccer as one of its fall sports. This sport is played informally with other schools in the Triple C league. Falmouth High's soccer team may have lacked style, but it certainly didn't lack spirit. Each member ofthe team hustled and scraped in every minute of the game. Kicked shins, sore toes, and bruised legs are disregarded in this fast-moving and exciting sport. . 03 5 S-C uf 1 I f M A 5 X X ,I P t - Y S f l I Fil X I 75.
