INTRODUCTION r Public kibrar Having been acknowledged by the faculty and administra- tion as the most impressive class to be graduated from Falmouth High School, it stands to reason that our yearbook should be equally impressive. We have tried to capture the spirit of our class in this Clipper Compact. Our class has always worked together; from our first car wash to M A S H, there has been an attitude of fun and a feeling of unified strength. Ours is the first class to overcome the imaginary barriers between cliques, and to become One. We are not, however, “dull” or “conforming.” We are simply a closely-knit group of individualists. In the future, as we look through this yearbook, we will remember that we are still the Class of 1980, wherever we are. Falmouth Public Library Falmouth, IV, ass. 02540 YEARBOOK STAFF Memories . . . Entering Falmouth High as strangers, we managed to carry out many successful projects under the guidance of Mr. Phillips. He never dictated to the class; he allowed us to carry out our own ideas and was always there to give help and sugges- tions. He has said that he is glad to see us “carry on, with work, the army, or school; carry on with spirit, on and up. Sail on forever.” We, Mr. Phillips, hope that you will always have smooth sailing, and we dedicate this yearbook to you. 5 A FOND FAREWELL TO . . . Tom and Betty MacGregor have been an integral and important part of Falmouth High School for seven years. They have decided now to “graduate” with the class of 1980, and reside in Florida dur- ing the winter, returning to Falmouth for the summer season. In ad- dition to holding the exhausting positions of security aides at FHS, they have also been the friendly faces we have turned to when our lockers were stuck, our lunches weren’t quite right, or when we just needed tickets to a football game. They worked not only during school hours, but often well into the evening chaperoning class and club-sponsored events. Therefore it is no surprise that they intend not to retire, but to possibly manage a guest house in a college town. The class of 1980, along with the rest of Falmouth High School thanks the MacGregors and wishes them the best for the future. . . . TOM BETTY 6 Donna Anderson Gymnastics. P SQ 2. Chickie. Concerts. Greg Gonye and Maura McCarthy were this year’s “Mr. and Miss Clipper.” Lizzy Lynds and Frank Rose were elected first attendants, and Barbara Gonsalves and Keith Johnson were chosen second attendants. “Mr. and Miss Clipper” are chosen on the basis of school spirit and participation in school activities. 20 Don’t Fall . . . Behind the leadership of coach Maureen O ' Brien and tri- captains Leslie Daigle, Crista Jensen and Lorin Macedo, this year ' s field hockey team recorded another outstanding season. The team qualified for the state tournament for the fifth straight year and finished a close second in the highly competitive SMC I with a 6-2-2 record. The Clippers breezed through the first half of the season virtually unscored upon until an unexpected TO loss to D-Y ended a 28 game undefeated streak and the Clippers return to their usual aggressive highly skilled level of play to defeat D-Y 1-0. The win also put Falmouth into state tournament play. Not only did the team experience the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat, but found, time after time, the qualities synonomous with FHS field hockey; spirit, pride, enthusiasm, and determination. All-Stars were wing Leslie Daigle (3rd year honors), halfback Jean Nolen, and inner Linda Bevelander. Awards went to Shari Patch: unsung hero, senior Stephanie Pine: most improved, senior Leslie Daigle: most valuable offense, and junior Jean Nolen: most valuable defense. Much credit also goes to coach O’Brien, high scorer crista Jensen, goalie Lorin Macedo, along with the entire team for a successful season. Coach John Carroll felt that this was due to the lack of par- ticipants. Although, he said that those who ran were able to hold their own through the season. The girls finished second in the D-Y Invitational, and were ninth in the Eastern Mass. Division II Meet. They split their two dual meets by beating Barnstable, but losing to D-Y. The season ended with a pleasing place in the Cape Cod Championship. Coach Carroll said that, “Maryann Marschall was the best point of the season . She ran an impressive 11th at the State Class Meet. (1st row) Dolly Farrell, Tina Peters, Tricia Madden, (2nd row) Mary Toran, LeeAnn Perry, Chris Fraizier, (3rd row) Sue Mendelson, Stephanie Stevens. Liz Pierce, Terry Rush, Maryann Marschall, Coach Carroll. 30 Coach’s Comment By any standards other than the ones we set for ourselves, 1979 was a first- rate year for cross country at FHS. This team made consant progress throughout the season, and 1 believe we were all sorry to see it end. Dan Oldale and Nick Meade cap- tained this ship. They led well, ran well, were first-class all season. Along with Pete Mello, the comprise this coach’s first graduating class. I only hope we keep finding others like these three. Robert Peters had his troubles early on, but became a pretty tough guy late in the aseason. Scott Ghelfi; took a giant step toward the top of the lineup. He carried us, without much help, through some rough spots in the early meets. Eric Mello and Todd Scuza walked right onto the varsity, no easy task for sophomores. Ready Teddy Farrell was close behind, and may be the best of the lot before he’s through. Then there’s the Mahoney. Brian is the best distance runner we’ve ever had, a tireless worker, and one of the state’s true heavyweights. In truth the good stuff on this team wouldn’t be happen- ing without him. All-Stars were Mark Thompson and . The season earmarked Coach Toran’s twentieth year of coaching, he was later selected Coach of the Year. 33 ANIMALS I If Greg Gonye and Keith Johnson steal the Barnstable banner on Thanksgiving. % % The Animals were revived this year after a long absence by a spirited group led by Keith Johnson. Keith put his ar- tistic ability to work and designed a logo which was printed on sweatshirts for the members. The group also helped promote school spirit by silk-screening the emblem onto stu- dents’ t-shirts free of charge for “Get Syked” Day. The Animals were a rowdy group at this year’s hockey games, and, evident by the picture above, played a most important role at the Thanksgiving Day game. Honorary animal Miss Connolly shows her spirit on “Get Syked Day. The first, “Danish Soap” deals with Shakespeare wishing to spark up new interest in his Hamlet by staging it as a modern daytime serial or “Soap”. The second, “Games”, shows four women, who had been childhood friends, at a reunion discussing how dif- ferent they all were, how much age had changed them. But, using the techniques of “flash backs” the play showed how they really had not changed at all, but still relied on the same games. The third and final play was “Fumed Oak” in which a quiet man who has lived too long with his nagging wife, mother-in-law, and daughter, revolts against them and in- forms them of how miserable they have made his life. The one-acts were all well done and a credit to the acting department of the school. 42 43 A.. m OS mH 20 Mr Von Hentschel beams. Need Some more polish? The annual Car Show arranged by Mr. Von Hentschel, the graphics classes, and Miss Doyle was a success. There was a fantastic variety of cars, motorcycles, and trucks. Entries ranged from “Golden Oldies to very modern vans. Some en- trants were “pros”; they had trophies and ribbons from previous shows prominently displayed. All who attended the Car Show, participants and onlookers alike, had a wonder- ful time. P 1 ' mm Anyone going my way? 44 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Senior Class Advisor Eugene Phillips, Steve Tessier, Nina Murphy, Barbara Gonsalves. The Senior Class led by advisor Eugene Phillips, Barbara Gonsalves, Steve Tessier, and Nina Murphy, President, Vice-President, and Secretary-treasurer respectively had a productive and busy year. The class of 1980 finally succeeded in pulling together and acting with spirit. This spirit was demonstrated by the enthusiastic participation in the Christmas Tree sales and our Senior Class Play “Mash.” Barbara, Steve, and Nina did an excellent job in pulling the class together and organizing all activities. Mr. Phillips was invaluable and without his help our four years here at FHS would not have been as enjoyable. Mr. Phillips stuck with us even though at times his patience was wearing thin (Remember Senior Homeroom?!). In short our Senior year has been wonderful thanks to Mr. Phillips, Barbara, Steve, and Nina. 45 Diana Tynne Swanson Hampton Take only pictures and leave only footprints as you travel through the sands of time. — DTSH. With many new players shining in their varsity debuts, the season proved exciting with an SMCI League record of 10-1-1 which brought them into tournament play. Falmouth’s first play-off victory Canton sent them to the Gar- den where they defeated Bishop Fenwick to advance to the semi-finals against Westwood. Then ultimately Falmouth faced Barnstbale for the finals in what critics called “an all-Cape af- fair. In this game it was Barnstable’s turn, but Falmouth put up a fight before relinquishing their crown 4-1. The most valuable player award must go to David Denton who was outstanding in the tourney, and against Barnstable. Sophomore Dick McEvoy is to be commended for his goal tending against Milton Academy and Canton. A 10-2 record in the league brought Falmouth the SMC III Championship, they participated in the state tournament for the third time in three years. The success of this team was a result of individual players giving themselves for the benefit of the team. Senior Co-Captains, Helmut Bryant and Chris Cardoza and seniors; Skip Blake, Chris Paine, Tom Wye, Mark Doucette epitimized this attitude. Coach Bob Watson expresses his appreciation to the players for their hard work and dedication, he hopes that relationships formed between players and coaches will go beyond wins and losses. The Medical Careers Club changed its name from Future Nurses so that not only those students interested in nursing but also anyone interested in any kind of medical career would have the opportunity to become a part of the hospital community and to decide whether or not they really want a future career in medicine. Besides helping the nurses at the hospital the club members sponsor fund raising events. This year a bowl-a-thon and a spaghetti dinner contributed to their scholarship fund which will be given to deserving seniors. Once each month board meetings are held at the hospital. Speakers attend these meetings and discuss their special field of medicine. Twice each month the girls do general night care and the older members do specialty night care at the hospital. The club also participated in the blood mobile. CHIC Chic is a group of students organized by Ms. Keith who are in- terested in fashion. Last year they dis- covered that they were capable of raising funds for a charity. This year they presented a fashion show with fashions from various merchants. The production was different this year in that it was held in February in- stead of the usual November or December. This change in seasons provided unforeseen complications, however, as a raging snowstorm postponed opening night. Also, illness raged rampant throughout the cast and crew and threatened to cancel the play com- pletely, but, luckily, that old trite but true saying “the show must go on” was held up once more and the play was a rousing success. 105 The actors and actresses of Falmouth High School were successful in the Boston Globe’s Drama Festival competition. The play Jean-Claude Van Italie’s “Interview”, deals with man’s inability to communicate; each character in the play sees life as a series of interviews during which he must prove himself to be acceptable by the rest of the world. “Interview was a winning play at the regional com- petitions. Each member of the cast won an acting award. The semi-finals were a repeat of the regionals with individual acting awards again being presented to the cast. The finals were held at the John Hancock Hall in Boston. “Interview” was not victorious; however, each member of the cast was named to the Massachusetts All-State Cast. The highly successful members of “Interview” cast were: Nina Murphy, Erik Stephens, Vincent Myette, Joan O’Connell, Ashley Edwards, Phil Anderson, Anne Pellegrini, and Loren Gibbons. 106 II 107 PHOTO STAFF PHOTOGRAPHERS: (front) Dede Hampton, Sharon Almeida, (back) Mary Bunker, Brian Guest, Tom Wye, Bret Bowin. Fury routine regular-army clown This year’s senior class decided to break with tradition, and instead of the usual musical, performed the comedy M A S H. It was the perfect choice, as four big audiences found out. The play is about teamwork in a wartime medical unit, and the Class of ’80 under the direction of Sarah Bunkley and senior Chris Paine, “raved on” and showed everyone what teamwork is all about. The ad-libs and goof-ups that occurred provided the cast with laughs which they will always remember: Greg breaking the cot, The Bonwit Sisters, Bob’s potato chips, The Bonwit Sisters, Mike and his Playboy magazine, The Bonwit Sisters . . . lots of memories. When we, the seniors, sail on into the world, let us always keep a bit of the spirit of M A S H in our hearts, and remem- ber, we’re still a bunch of weirdos, but we’re gonna miss each other. The dance was held on May 17, which luckily was a beautiful night. The bands were “Horse” and “Sound Machine”, and the latter picked for our Queen Judy Woods and as Court Members Debi Sachs, Jackie Volpe, Bettiann Rubino, and Ann Jarvis. A beaming Cheryl April Dr. Clark addresses the class on their last night before graduation Awards night was held on Thursday, May 29 and was the final event during Graduation before the big event the following night. The Class of 1980 received more aid than any previous class, and it was really enjoyable to see friends get their scholarships. Dr. Clark and the three House Administrators all spoke to the group and the Falmouth High School Chamber Choir performed. You certainly could feel excitement in the air as you left the auditorium that night knowing that the next time you ' d be in it would be for Graduation Line-Up! 148 House C Administrator Donald Burnette gives Anita Deuser an award Mr Phillips has a kiss for Mercy Mr. Lany presents $4,000 bank scholarship to T. Yet another tradition was broken by not holding it at the Seacrest. While the members of the Class of ’80 ate either prime rib or shrimp, they had a chance to reminisce about old times and compare thoughts of the future. Then there was dancing to the music of “Lady Luck”. All in all, the Senior Banquet was filled with many memories for many people. 150 IT ' S OVER Best of friends, never part Class of ' 80 started together, We ' ll stick together with our hearts. So why pretend? This is the end. We ' ll have to find out for ourselves Going on to somewhere else. So why can ' t you just get it through your heads It ' s over, it ' s over now Yes, you heard us clearly now, we said: It ' s over, it ' s over now. We’re not really over school You might say that we can ' t take it, We can ' t take it, No, we swear we just can ' t take it no more. Goin ' away, so far away, It ' s too late to turn back now, And it don ' t matter anyhow ' Cause we ' ll leave, And we ' ll be missed Won ' t go on the same old way, ' Cause it ' s our graduation day! Boz Scaggs 151 Superintendent Berquist, Dr. Clark, Mrs. Norton, seniors and friends, it is a pleasure to be here, and an honor, and also a surprise. Fifteen years ago, as I sat among the graduates of the class of 1965, 1 was quite sure of two things: that it was my last high school graduation, and that I was leaving Falmouth for good. As you can see, it hasn’t worked out that way. It’s been a long, strange trip, as they say, from that side of the podium, to this. And it started out, as I planned, on the other side of the bridge. For twelve years I worked on that side of the world, in Washington and Philadelphia, and Boston, in Congress, in the Senate, in journalism, in the federal courts. I found there is a glitter to these sites of power, a sense of glamour and importance. Highly paid people being whisked here and there, important reports written and read, meetings, media, big decisions, weighty matters. And yet, when you look at where the major changes in our society have come from, you will find that none of them originated in these places where all the attention has been paid. The civil rights movement, the women’s liberation movement, the anti-war efforts of the 60’s, the en- vironmental movement, Proposition 13, the right to life organizations, the anti-nuclear crusade — all of these started far outside the halls of power, far from the center of government. Significant ideas for change never come from the established order. They always come from the grass roots, from the people who care about each other, about their surroundings, and think they can make a difference. These are the people I found in Falmouth. Here, people are known for who they are and what they give, not where they work or what they make. Here, people care about land, and the past, and each other. Here, people still have a sense of control, a sense of their own community, a sense of their own values. Here, I thought, 1 could make a difference. Here I found my roots. Your roots are here too. Those acres of fields in East Falmouth — they were woods once, cleared tree by tree, stump by stump, by Costas, Cardozas, Gonsalves and Rapozas. The most distinguished oceanographic complex in the world is in Woods Hole, built up by Bumpuses and Foffonofs and Vac- caros. Those stone walls winding through the woods of West Falmouth — they were lugged there, stone by stone, by Crockers and Giffords, Swifts and Bowmans. Chapoquoit and Menahaunt, Waquoit and Sip- pewissott — they were named centuries ago by the ancestors of today’s Hendricks and Peters and Mills. As Falmouth High School graduates, you are a part of this place, and whether you stay, or go away to school, or come back on weekends, or never come back for a dozen years — whenever you do come back you will find, as I did, that you never really left. This is your land, these are your people. And if there is to be any change in the human spirit in America in the last quarter of the 20th century, it won’t start in Washington, or New York, or Boston. It won’t come from HUD, EDA, or HEW, or CBS, or NBC, or Travelers, or Exxon, or McDonalds. When the change comes, it will come in spite of the corporate marketing strategies and the bureaucratic decrees and the economic manipulators who have put us where we are today. When the change comes, it will be when people realize that their only salvation lies in themselves, and that together they can make it happen. When the change comes, it will come first in communities like ours, small places with people who know their past, know their neighbors, and know their own values to be true. And when the change comes, I look forward to sharing it with you. 152 GRADUATION! 153 Greg Gonye, president of Honor Society 154 155 V 156 u N D E R C L A S S M E N 157 UNDERCLASSMEN The road ahead may appear long But time passes quickly. They spent many hours in the dark this past year in order to make this book a reality. Picture editors Sharon Almeida, Dede Hampton and Tom Wye along with Bret Bowin, Mary Bunker, Brian Guest and the photographers listed below did what no Clipper Compact staff had done before . . . with the exception of some group pictures and senior pictures they photographed, developed and printed all of the pictures appearing in this book - color included! No samll task! I would especially like to thank Sharon Dede for organizing, for becoming overwrought at times and for staying calm at others, and most of all for helping me worry. They carried the bulk of the load and did a remarkable job . . . and thanks also to Tom for spending a good deal of his February vacation doing the color prints for the “scrapbook” section. And to the section editors, Thank You . . . . . . to Tricia Boudrot, for doing the senior section while on vacation in Florida! . . . to Kim Kelley and Bret Bowin, for being as thorough and dependable as I could expect two people to be. . . .to Laurie Rebello, for the creation and design of our posters. . . . to Alice Wilkinson and Ivey Schmitz, for getting their layouts done, though they weren’t always sure which ones were supposed to be done. . . . to Denise Mongeau, Liz McMillen, Crystal Martin and Steve Tessier for diligently creating order out of chaos with the underclassmen and teacher sections . . . and to Steve for not having a 1st name beginning with “M”. . . .to our Editors-in-Chief Hannah Hosom and Alana Thorpe for their organization, direction and un- daunted good spirits throughout the year. and finally, to the staff as a group, congratulations on putting together a fine book. “Thank You’s” Also to: Wendy Bauman and her business staff for making this book possible Curt McKee for answers and advice Maura McCarthy for writing and layout Jane Botelho for layout Joan Nightengale for layout Sandl Rodrelgues and Bob Bowles for Invaluable computer lists Seamist of Hyannls for special service In doing the color print for our endsheets Dee VonHentchel for printing our posters Russle Wlght-Waltman for consulting done on artwork The WFHS 7V crew The Perspective staff Anne Craddock.
