The event was sponsored by the Pep Club and was held in the old gym. Providing the entertainment was Dave Knight, a DJ from KKjO of St. Joseph. PEP CLUB SPRING DANCE 30 HOMECOMING 79 Homecoming festivities for 1979, sponsored by Student Council, began colorfully and showed the real meaning of school pride and spirit. The traditional activities of the week included Grubby Day followed by the drastic change of Dress-up Day” and Color Day, during which the members of the various classes wore different colors. Freshman wore blue, the color of our opponent Sabetha, while upperclassmen wore school colors. Thursday night the spirit line snaked its way through the town before ending at the bonfire and pep rally. Friday was designated as Victory Day and the student body’s spirit was boosted by the painting of cars by the cheerleaders and the parade down Stone Street ending with a pep rally on the Courthouse lawn. The junior class had the winning float, with second going to the freshman class and third to the chorus. The chorus won the banner contest, with Student Council winning second, and third going to the sophomores. What followed was a hard fought game with the Sabetha Blue Jays. It was excitement to the very end when a late Sabetha touchdown broke the deadlock and moved them ahead for a final and disappointing score of 28 to 20. During halftime Tom and Teresa O’Grady were crowned king and queen by last year’s royalty, Gaye Runyan and Steve Steinman. Vt HOMECOMING ROYALTY For the first time in Falls City High School history, twins reigned over the Homecoming Festivities. Tom and Teresa O’Grady, son and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed O’Grady, were crowned the king and queen of the Falls City Tiger Homecoming during ceremonies between halves of the Falls City-Sabetha football game at Jug Brown Stadium. Homecoming attendants for 1979 were Anne Fruhling. daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Lawrence Fruhling; John Farmer, son of Dr. and Mrs. Bill Farmer; Lori Vandeberg, daughter of Mr. and The Queen was a member of the Pep Club, and has been a member of the band for three years. During her sophomore year she was a junior varsity cheerleader, and during her junior year she was a wrestling cheerleader. She competed in track her freshman year and has played girls' basketball for four years, lettering her junior and senior years. Teresa has been a member of DECA for two years and was the organization’s vice president. She also served as secretary of the Student Council her senior year and was elected to the position of County Treasurer on County Government Day. The King was a member of the football team for four years and is a member of F-Club. He was a member of the German Club his freshman year, was in band 31 2 years and has served on the Student Council for three years. He was the council secretary last year and its president his senior year. He was also the vice president of his junior class and was selected to attend County Government Day. Tom has been on the honor roll for three years and is a member of the National Honor Society. Tom has been a member of DECA for two years and was its treasurer this year. He is also a state officer for DECA and he attended the national convention in Houston as a voting delegate from Nebraska. 32 Tom and Teresa O’Grady 33 EVENING FESTIVITIES On Friday night Tiger spirit was high, but the Sabetha Bluejays crushed our hopes for a victory. As the FCHS marching band played “Summer Breeze, the homecoming candidates were announced. Teresa O’Grady was crowned queen and Tom O’Grady received the King's scepter. Homecoming attendants were Lori Vandeberg and Jim Parrish, and Ann Fruhling and John Farmer. A dance which featured the band “The Boys was held after the game at the Elks Lodge. Cross Country team was the strongest ever. The team began the 79 campaign by winning their first two major invitationals. At both Plattsmouth and Fairbury invitationals. they beat the defending state champions, Pius X. Pius went on to win the 1979 State Championship also. The Tigers went undefeated in duals on the season, blazing in with three perfect scores. The team won the last ever Twin Rivers Cross Country meet. Falls City had. for the first time in its history, an entire team qualify for the State Meet when they finished third in the B-l District Meet at Lincoln. Individually, the Tigers collected a total of sixteen medals. Senior Phil Kiekhaefer led the team in individual places winning nine out of ten races of the year. Dennis Prichard, a junior, ran very' strongly placing high in several big meets, juniors Billy Miller and Steve Schulcnberg with senior Jeff Mount played a very' important role in the team scoring. Kiekhaefer. conference and district champion, ran into some controversy after he qualified for the State Meet. Before the season, he had been ruled eligible by the Nebraska School Activities Association. However, due to a decision on residency by the Falls City Board of Education, he was declared ineligible for the State Meet. The team, which had been picked by the Omaha World-Herald as one of the favorites for the title, ran their poorest showing of the year. They finished 15th in the state, very respectable, but they were beaten by several teams they had rolled over during the season. 81 FRESHMAN GIRLS’ BASKETBALL FRESHMAN RECORD 0-7 FC OPP 31 Tarkio 48 21 Auburn 25 11 Nebr.
