The 1978-1979 Homecoming Queen was Gaye Runyan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bud Runyan. She has been in Pep Club for 4 years, a member of Drill Team 1 year, and a cheerleader for 2 years. Gaye served as treasurer of the Junior class and was secretary her senior year. She was a member of band 4 years, double sax quartet 1 year, Vice President and Band Queen her senior year. She has been on the honor roll 4 years and participated in County Government Day her junior year. She worked on the annual as layout editor in Journalism. Gaye is also a member of the National Honor Society. The 1978-1979 Homecoming King was Steve Steinman. son of Mrs. Margie Steinman. He has been in football 1 year and wrestling 4 years, lettering all four years. Steve qualified for the State Wrestling Tournament 2 years, finishing 6th in the 112 lb. division his junior year Steve was vice president of the Freshman and Senior class. He has been in Student Council 4 years, treasurer his junior year and president his senior year. He was in German Club 1 year and DECA 1 year. Steve has been on the honor roll for 4 years. He participated in County Government Day his junior year and is currently a member of the National Honor Society. Homecoming ’78 In 1978 Student Council again sponsored the Homecoming activities. They included a “Color day. Mix-Match Day, bonfire, parade, coronation of a king and queen, and a dance after the football game. The students and faculty wore clothes that didn’t match on Mix-Match Day. On “Color Day” the members of the various classes wore different colors. Freshmen wore blue, the color of our opponent Plattsmouth. while upperclassmen wore school colors. Thursday night the spirit line wove its way through the town before ending at the bonfire and pep rally. Activities on Friday included the painting of cars by the cheerleaders, and the traditional parade down Stone Street ending with a pep rally on the Courthouse lawn. Winners in the float competition were Chorus, first; Senior class, second; Junior class, third. Banners were also hung from the stadium walls Friday night. 42 43 EVENING FESTIVITIES On Friday night Tiger spirit was high but the Plattsmouth Blue Devils crushed hopes for a Tiger Victory. The Outstanding DECA Student was Link Luff. Six Students went to New York City in March on a Fashion Merchandising Trip. Participating were: Sondra Bindle, Mary Sue Frederick, Kim Kuhlman. Cathy O'Grady, Cindy Simpson, and Debbie Strasil. In February, DECA sponsored a pancake feed at the Elks Club as a money raising project. Tom O'Grady was elected the district vice president of DECA at the State Leadership Conference held in Omaha on March 22 - 24. Link Luff placed in the top 8 overall in the Petroleum contest. Farrell Stephens placed second in Communications - Food Marketing. Tom O’Grady placed second in Communications - General Merchandising. Sondra Bindle placed third in Communications - Apparel Accessories. April 30th, members of DECA entertained their employers at the annual employer - employee banquet held at the Elks Club. Peggy Lampe got 1st place in the State Vo. Ag. and FFA Contest in Agronomy. Rich Reschke and Bruce Ernst both got purple ribbons for Nursery and Landscape Management. Dan Scholl got a purple ribbon for Meat Judging and Identification. The Nursery and Landscape Management got 3rd place, purple, and a plaque. Susan Huppert got a State Proficiency Award - Dairy - 4th place. Falls City Chapter received 3rd place Chapter Award at the State Fair in Ag. Mechanics. Melinda Martin played in the State F.F.A. Band. At the District FFA Contest they received the following awards: Sr. Parliamentary Procedure Team, red; Jr. Parliamentary Procedure Team, white; Extemporaneous Speaking - Peggy Lampe. blue. Creed Speaking - Cheryl Goff. blue. Public Speaking - Kim Godemann, red. To climax the year's events the FFA Banquet was held April 21. 1979, at the high school gym. The speaker was Bryce Ritz. the 1978 - 79 Central Area Vice President. The 1978-79 Student Council played an active part in events at Falls City High School during the past year. Homecoming was celebrated by Color Day, Mis-Match Day, a bonfire, dance, and the half-time coronation. The Christmas Prom was under the sponsorship of Student Council with the Senior girls assisting. Student Council members helped during Career Night by setting up information tables. Student Council was also in charge of keeping the candy and pop machines full. A new feature was added this year as each week two Student Council members reported on school activities on KTNC. Sondra Reesman and Sara Wentz represented Falls City High School as disc jockeys for the county Cancer crusade. Student Council purchased a mirror ball which may be rented by various groups. An after prom breakfast at Lil' Duffer was also sponsored in part by Student Council. During the Seniors last week in school a 50’s Day was held. At noon students bought sandwiches from the Sophomore class while Student Council members passed out free pop and candy. The Tiger offense began to click as the lineman opened big holes and the backs ran tough. Kevin Scheitel opened scoring for the Tigers by intercepting a pass and returning it 72 yards for a touchdown. John Farmer set up the next score by making a nifty 4th down run. Scheitel carried the ball in from the one and passed to Jim Parrish for the conversion. Wymore then kicked a field goal with but 24 seconds left on the clock. Defensive leaders were Don Gentry. Sept. 22) Falls City came up with their first victory of the year against the Maryville Mo Spoofhounds by the score of 14 - 12. The big play was a 4th down touchdown pass from quarterback Kevin Scheitel to end Kevin Ivey. The play covered 32 yards and came with just 4 minutes left in the game. Dave Meinzer got the score on a 2 yard run up the middle. From that point on Syracuse took advantage of Tiger mistakes and opened up a big lead. The Tigers got their final touchdown late in the game on a 3 yard run by Kevin Scheitel. Jim Parrish and Rick Whalen led the Tigers on defense. Punt Returns Lead Fairbury Past Tigers (Falls City vs. Fairbury; Falls City; Sept. 8th) Fairbury displayed the big plays on punt returns to defeat the Tigers by the score of 13 to 0. The Tigers Orange Crush defense was outstanding in limiting the Jeffs only hard fought yards. The Tigers offense sputtered but still outgained the visiting Jeffs. Plattsmouth Downs Tigers on Homecoming (Falls City vs. Plattsmouth; Falls City; Oct. 13) The Plattsmouth Blue Devils defeated the Tigers by the score of 35 - 0. The Orange Crush Defense played aggressively and gave up only one score the first half. City; Falls City; Oct. 20) The powerful Nebraska City Pioneers defeated the Tigers 32 - 6 in the last home game of the season. John Farmer scored on a 4 yard run for the only Tiger points of the night. The Tiger reserves made a fine showing in the fourth quarter and should help the team next year. Tigers Capture Conference Win from Auburn (Falls City vs. Auburn; Auburn; Sept. 29) The Falls City Tigers won their second straight game by downing Auburn 16 - 12. on a rain soaked field in Auburn. The Tigers scored first as Jim Parrish and Link Luff trapped an Auburn player in the end zone for a safety. John Farmer scored both touchdowns, the last one being for 52 yards midway through the 4th quarter. Kevin Scheitel then threw to Farmer for the extra point conversion. Oct. 6) The Hiawatha Redskins scored a late touchdown in the final minute to stop the Tiger winning streak. Jim Parrish and John Farmer made Falls City’s first two touchdowns and Don Gentry gave the Tigers their only lead late in the 4th quarter when he stripped the ball from a Hiawatha player and returned it 40 yards for a Falls City touchdown. John Farmer Christmas Prom 1978 The 1978 Christmas Prom, sponsored by Student Council, was held on December 22 in the High School Gym. Music was furnished by the band “Urban Renual” from Omaha. The gym was decorated with Christmas colors of every shade. Streamers were dropped from the ceiling through a ring with a gigantic Christmas tree in the center. The tree had ornaments, blinking lights, and tinsel. Snowflakes glistened all around. Santa visited and brought candy canes for everyone. Cookies and punch were also furnished. 1978 - 1979 Junior - Senior Prom 116 We’ve Got Tonight On May 4. 1979. the Elks Club was the scene for the 1978 - 79 Junior -Senior Prom. Midnight Blue and Silver were the colors chosen by the Juniors to further enhance the theme. We've Got Tonight . Tom O'Grady gave the invocation. The meal which was prepared by mothers of the junior class consisted of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, jello, and texas cake.
