I’ll see ya and raise ya ten. Brian gets the point! Who wants gum? Wouldn’t you like to see? We’re all in our places with bright shining faces. The night's festivities started before the game as members of the pep band rode around town on a hayrack playing songs and Mr. Dickson using loudspeakers to urge people to come to the game. The Tigers lost a victory to the Hiawatha Redskins, but the Orange Pride stayed alive throughout the game. At halftime, Pam Pethoud and Chuck O'Grady were named Homecoming Queen and King. A dance followed the game with music furnished by “Savage Eye. Student Council got Homecoming ‘77 started off by designating Tuesday, October 4, as “Color Day.” The Freshmen dressed in blue and red. the colors of the opposing team. The Sophomores wore black, the Juniors wore white, and the Seniors had the privilege of wearing orange. There were some very unusual sights on Thursday, as it was “Mix-Match Day. The students and faculty wore clothes that didn’t match. That evening a cheering spirit line went through the town and ended up at the traditional bonfire. The cheerleaders and pep band got the spirit going and Coach Redel gave a speech. A “Gong Show” skit was performed by the Drill Team. On Friday afternoon the Homecoming Parade added to the excitement. Everyone then gathered for a pep rally at which Mr. Joy gave a speech. 30 31 First Place Banner—DECA Homecoming Royalty The 1977-1978 Homecoming Queen was Pam Pethoud, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Pethoud. Falls City gained 12 first downs despite the 5 fumbles lost. Dave Meinzer scored from the 2 in the start of the second quarter. In the third quarter Kevin Scheitel lofted a pass to Mark Hodge which the latter ripped away from a Rocket defender for the score. Jim Parrish led the defensive unit with 6 tackles. Tigers Lose to Fairbury, 20-0 (Falls City at Fairbury; Sept. 9) Although the Tigers were unable to score, they played on nearly even terms with the Jeffs. They finished with almost as many total yards and more first downs. But once again turnovers hurt the Tigers as they lost 4 fumbles and 2 interceptions. Defensive leaders for Falls City were Jim Parrish, Dave Gentry, and Steve Sheets. Raiders Defeat Tigers 14-6 (Wymore Southern at Falls City; Sept. 17) The Raiders of Wymore Southern were first on the board at the Tigers’ first home game of the season. But Falls City came back in the second quarter to tie up the game at 6-6 when Kevin Scheitel connected with Dave Meinzer for a 3 yard TD pass. The Tigers made the rest of the going rough for Wymore by setting up a tough defense. In the 4th quarter it appeared that the game would end in a 6-6 deadlock until the Raiders intercepted a Tiger pass late in the quarter to set up the winning touchdown. Big Plays Defeat Tigers 20-12 (Falls City at Maryville, Sept. 23) Falls City started the game as if they were headed for a victory. The Tigers jumped out to a 12-0 lead with Kevin Scheitel and Dave Meinzer making the points. The Spoofhounds scored twice to make the score 13-12 at halftime. The rest of the game was defensive until the last minutes, when the Spoofhounds broke another big play to make the score 20-12. The defensive leaders for the Tigers were Tony Kopf, Dave Gentry, Jim Parrish, Don Gentry, and Dennis Bauman. Bulldogs Nip Tigers, 16-6 (Auburn at Falls City; Sept. 30) The Bulldogs came out to an early lead, scoring on their first drive. The Tigers came back with a strong drive to the one yard line until they turned it over to the Bulldogs. John Farmer set up the first Tiger score, with an interception at the 50 yard line that he returned to the 32, which after 4 plays Tom Wilson scored from the 5. The defensive leaders, Jim Parrish, Dennis Bauman, Rick Whalen, Karl Steele, Dave Gentry, Mel Shafer, Steve Sheets, and John Law helped hold the Bulldogs to only one other touchdown, finishing the game 6-16. 88 Tom Jones, Kevin Scheitel, Coach Larry Munn, Coach Jim Redel. Tim Bad Luck and Redskins Hit Tigers, 20-8 (Hiawatha at Falls City; Oct. 7) The Redskins ruined the Tigers’s Homecoming with the 20-8 victory. The Tigers had bad luck from the start, they tried an onside kick, but it rolled out of bounds short of the 10 yards. The Tigers defensive squad played well despite the fact they were on the field most of the game. Tom Wilson was the only Tiger to score, running it in for the touchdown and the conversion points. The defensive leaders were Tony Kopf, Rick Whalen, John Law, Don Gentry, John Martin, Steve Sheets, and Dave Gentry. Tigers Downed By Blue Devils, 12-27 (Falls City at Plattsmouth; Oct. 16) Falls City got off to a slow start against the Blue Devils, as the latter jumped to a 14-0 lead at halftime. Tom Burton blocked a Blue Devil punt to set up Kevin Scheitel for the score on a double reverse late in the third quarter. The Tigers again went to a razzle dazzle play for a score, when after a double reverse, Kevin Scheitel connected with Mark Hodge to make the score' 20-12. Outstanding defensive leaders were Jim Parrish and Mark Hodge. Falls City Bows to Pioneers, 6-29 (Falls City vs. Nebr. City at Peru, Oct. 21) Once again the Tigers played in rain and a muddy field. A field goal in the first quarter gave Nebraska City a 3-0 lead. But the Tigers took the kickoff and drove to the Pioneer three. On the fourth down Kevin Scheitel threw a TD pass to Mark Hodge who made an outstanding catch for a 6-3 lead. Falls City held the lead until Nebraska City scored in the middle of the third quarter. A beautiful evening, complete with a full moon, added greatly to the occasion. •John Falter, a graduate of the Class of 1928 and a famous artist and illustrator, gave the commencement address. He had planned to use a lide presentation as part of his talk, but was prevented from doing so because it was too light. Therefore, he spoke of his experiences while growing up in Falls City. We will long remember this perfect evening. Front row: Darlene Witt, Glenda Eames, Brenda Zentner, Denise Huebner, Cindy Gerweck.
