Queen Joan Heineman King Jim Murphy Homecoming Royalty Homecoming ’76 This year’s Homecoming began colorfully when Student Council designated Thursday, October 14th, as “Color Day.” To show their school pride and spirit, the upperclassmen wore school colors and freshmen wore blue, the color of our opponent Plattsmouth. That night was the real kickoff as Coach Martin and the Student Council prepared a bonfire in the City parking lot. The volleyball team was victorious that night, adding to the spirit. The varsity cheerleaders led the chants as Mr. Dickson struck-up the pep band. Speeches were given by the various coaches and a skit entitled “Super Tiger” was given by the Thespians. Friday was designated as “Victory Day” and pep club decorated the halls with fight posters. Everyone wore orange and banners were made by the various organizations and classes. Winners in the contest were: Chorus, first; Senior class, second. The parade began by the City building and went south on Stone. Winners in the float competition were: Chorus, first; Spanish Club, second; Junior class, third; and honorable mention went to Coach Crawford’s car. A pep rally followed the parade. The band played and Mr. Vanderheiden gave a speech. Coach Martin also spoke, saying, “... the time to talk is through ...” What followed was a hard fought game with the Plattsmouth Blue Devils. Starting with the kickoff, the Tigers struggled with the third rated team in the State. A disappointing score of 49 to 12 was the outcome of the game. During halftime Joan Heineman was crowned queen and Jim Murphy was handed the king’s sceptre. 28 Winnie The Pooh Winnie-the-Pooh, a musical comedy based on the famous children’s stories by A. A. The Hitchcock Road Band furnished fantastic music. The band has five members. The gym was decorated with the stunning colors of Royal and Ice blue and sparkling silver. Colored streamers were dropped from the ceiling through a ring, with a three-tiered shimmering chandelier hanging in the center. Directly underneath the chandelier was the magnificent fourteen foot Christmas tree. The tree was decorated with blinking lights, silver and gold tinsel, and shiny Christmas ornaments. Evergreen branches and colored lights decorated the balcony rail and down the steps. Later in the evening came a memorable visit from Santa Claus who had candy canes for everyone. Twinkling lights and holly twined together came down from the balcony to the floor in a V-shape to set off Santa’s chair. Refreshments of cookies and punch were served on a table with ice blue angel hair surrounding it. A delicious punch was served from two punch bowls on either end of the table. 51 ROW ONE: Lenny Baker, Harold Mann, Troy Hall, Tom Scholl, Jeff Young, Jeff Mount, Darrold Feighner, Dennis Nolte, Steve Huppert, Richard Reschke. Ron Strecker , Season Summary Falls City Drops Opener 6 to 41 (Falls City vs. Syracuse; Falls City; Sept. 3rd) The Falls City Tigers opened their 1976 football season with a loss to the Rockets of Syracuse. Tom Wilson was the only Tiger able to score. The touchdown came on a drive late in the fourth quarter. Jeffs Defeat Tigers 7 to 20 (Falls City vs. Fairbury; Falls City; Sept. 10th) An experienced Fairbury squad revenged last year’s loss to Falls City in a defensive battle considered to be one of the best played the whole season. Melvin Shafer scored on a one-yard plunge after setting up his TD with some fine running in the fourth quarter. Jim Murphy scored the extra point. Wymore Shuts Out Tigers by 42 (Falls City vs. Wymore Southern; Wymore; Sept. 17th) The Wymore Raiders once again showed the Tigers that spirit is not enough to win a ball game. A touchdown early in the first quarter was enough to seal off the game for the Raiders. The Tiger team and fans showed spirit and hope until the final gun even though the offense was unable to gain ground with the strong Raider defense. STANDING LEFT Varsity Tigers Taste 12 to 6 Victory (Falls City vs. Maryville, Mo.; Falls City; Sept. 24th) A large home crowd helped cheer the cats on to their first victory of the season. An excellent show of football led the way for Jim Murphy’s one-yard drive in the second quarter and Melvin Shafer’s sensational runback on the punt. The Tiger defense held the Spoofhounds on three consecutive downs inside the five yard line at the end of the fourth quarter to keep the game in the hands of the Tigers. Duane Armbruster earned the Lincoln Journal and Star Athlete of the Week Award for his 27 tackles during the game. Bulldogs Chase Cats 0 to 51 (Falls City vs. Auburn; Auburn; Oct. 1st) The Falls City Tigers fell to the Bulldogs who took command of the game in the opening minutes with a series of runbacks. At the beginning of the second half the spirited Tigers started an offensive that was thwarted by the Dogs and were not able to regroup before the clock ran down. Redskins Avenge Tigers 28 to 36 (Falls City vs. Hiawatha, Kans.; Hiawatha; Oct. 8th) The Redskins of Hiawatha avenged last year’s loss to Falls City by holding on to their Homecoming game. Although the Tigers weren’t on the scoreboard at the half, a fired up Tiger squad returned to score 21 points in the third quarter and another seven in the fourth. Their efforts proved fruitless when the Redskins scored late in the fourth to put the game just barely out of reach when the whistle blew. Touchdowns were scored twice by Wilson’s running efforts, once by Murphy, and on a three yard pass from Scheitel to Hedrick. 72 TO RIGHT: Mark Hodge . Melvin Shafer . Kevin Ivey, Link Luff. Football Bluedevils Spoil Homecoming 12 to 49 (Falls City vs. Plattsmouth; Falls City; Oct. 15th) Although the Tigers scored on their first drive, the Bluedevils quickly halted the hopes of the high-spirited Tigers by taking a 35-6 lead at the half time. Tom Wilson scored on the first drive with a 14-yard run all the way to paydirt. Late in the third quarter Bill Vanderheiden and Kevin Scheitel combined for a pass play that again proved good for six points. Dave Gentry led the tackles with 14. Pioneers Defeat Tigers 0 to 30 (Falls City vs. Nebraska City; Falls City; Oct. 22nd) After a blank scoreboard in the first half, the Nebraska City Pioneers came through with 30 points to put away the game. The Tigers were unable to score throughout the game. Duane Armbruster was the leading tackle for the Tigers with 11. Cowboys Lasso Tigers 9 to 45 (Falls City vs. Boys Town; Boys Town; Oct. 27th) After a long trip to Boys Town, the Tigers were ready to return after the first half. It was a cold and crisp night on the field of the Cowboys as the Tigers were unable to spoil their Homecoming. Defensive leaders in the game for the Tigers were Randy Feighner. Duane Armbruster, and Melvin Shafer. 73 ROW ONE: Susan McGinnis, Diane Kirby-, Linda Cudney , Cindy Gerweck, Janice Kottich . Kay Schulenberg , Debby West , Kim Kuhlman, Janet Surman .
