The demands on the cast were unique. Each person on stage had to be able to dance and sing and act and not one character appeared in fewer than half of the 17 scenes. It was the first show to run for 3 nights, with a total of 2100 persons in attendance. Joe Charbonneau is cast in the leading role of Tevye, the poor dairyman with 5 unmarried daughters and a sharp tongued wife, not to mention a lame horse, all of whom are dependent upon him. The story takes place in the revolutionary period of Russian history when the Jews were being driven from their homes. This touching musical is filled with joy and sorrow, delight and despair, comedy and intense drama. Tom Stalder at the piano. Tradition! 9 I W.A The ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. Paul. Sakini Two of the authentic props. Saki (the goat) and the jeep. Celebrating in the new teahouse. This comedy, set during World War II in Okinawa, satirizes the occupational forces of the United States military. Colonel Purdy, played by Bob Garrett, is bent on Americanizing the Okinawans, and sends Captain Fisby. played by Doug Weaver, to carry out his orders of “making the natives learn democracy even if he has to shoot everyone.” Fisby's orders are to make the village self-supporting and to introduce democracy. He accomplishes half of this order. The natives are earning money selling their homemade brandy to all of the surrounding U S. services. Of course, since Capt Fisby can't speak Okinawan, he needs an interpreter. This role is expertly played by Doug Appleoff. as Sakini. Captain Fisby even has his own Geisha girl. Caroline Fox. that causes him trouble as she tries to adapt him to the Okinawan way of life. The play was very well done and will long be remembered in the minds of the audience. Mike Stewart and Mike Bohrer. on the team. The rest of the varsity team were freshmen John Chittick and Gary Richey, and sophomores Scott Nelson. Quinten Sutherland, and Alan Koenig. The cross country season wasn’t as good this year as it had been in the past but with the experience the younger members gained this year, next year’s season should be really great. Coach Fritz bringing in Nelson. Chittick’s done truckin’. Hiawatha Invitational It was a rainy day when the harriers went down to the Hiawatha Invitational. Spirits were high because of the wins taken here the past two years. Ed Harris, who came out later in the season, took a 1st in the B-team race with a time of 12:17. With this extra boost of spirit the Tiger varsity took off. After a few minutes of anxious waiting we found we had tied Maur Hill for 1st. In Kansas there is no coin flip and a trophy goes to both teams making it the third 1st place at the Hiawatha Invitational. 103 Mike! Watch out for the . . . . . mud. Jeff Prosser was bestowed the honor of Honorable Mention All-Conference. Coach Ribble Speaks The Falls City basketball team compiled a five and thirteen record during the 1973-74 season. Although the won-loss record is not as successful as the Tigers had hoped it is not indicative of the team’s strength. This year our area was a basketball “hotbed” as all the teams were very strong. The future is bright because only two of the nine lettermen graduate this year. 116 CAPTIONS OF PICTURES CLOCKWISE FROM UPPER-LEFT HAND CORNER: Some of the opposing teams' members astound us with the natural, graceful moves they make. All players' eyes anxiously follow the ball. The thrill of victory and the agony of the feet. Mike Dunn gets ready to shoot the ball for a basket. The easiest way to win a game has been to never let the other team on the court. 117 FRONT ROW: Jay Bahr. Jim Farmer. Jim Schulenberg. Robert Baker. BACK ROW: Mike Waddle. Alan Koenig. Bob Ewing.
