The Student Council was in charge of the decoration of the windows uptown. 44 Although it was raining the spirits of the FCHS student body were not dampened and the parade started off on time, lead by the FC band. Here is a typical entry in the parade. The co-captains for the 1969 football season, Dave Kottich and Mark Jilek, predict a Homecoming Victory. Scalp the Indians! This was the battle cry of the day, and Stan Kottich and Rick Jones got an early start. Three innocent squaws pool their efforts to halt the rain. 45 This float added the needed “touch” to the parade. ROW ONE: Jerry Anno, Rex Stice, Ron Kelley, Lanny Deckinger. The Music On February 16 and 17, Falls City High School presented Meredith Wilson’s famous stage play “Music Man.” It was directed by Mr. Warner and Mr. Aitken. Many hours of practice were put into this show and it was definitely well worth the time and effort, for this play was a true success. Without the help of the make-up crew, consisting of Beth Dorste and Sandy Marrs, the 1970 musical would have never been the great success it was. Below is a scene from the gym in which the whole chorus participated. 77 MikeCharbonneau.as Harold Hill, informs the townspeople that they have “Trouble” in River City. 78 Julie Falter and her companions form a fountain. The dancers added to the excitement of the show with their “Shipoopi” dance. This part of the “Shipoopi” dance brought shouts and applause from the audience. Pride Closes Season With Impressive Wins The Tigers enjoyed their most successful season since 1967 as they finished with a 4-5 record. They finished second in the Aksarben and third in the Twin Rivers conferences. After losing their first four games by narrow margins, the Tigers finished strong, winning four of their last five games after developing Orange Pride before the Hiawatha game. Statistically the Orange Pride outplayed every opponent except the strong Nebraska City and Wymore Southern teams, outscoring the opposition 172-186 as a strong defense held down the scoring. The defense played an important role in every victory, scoring four touchdowns in the final game at Syracuse. In the opening game at Fairbury, the Tigers scored first on a safety, but the Jeffs scored late in the 4th quarter to win 6-2. The second game found the Tigers still having trouble to score as they were beaten by a strong Wymore team 8-0. Traveling to Maryville, the Tigers’ offense scored its first two touchdowns of the season. They led until the fourth quarter when the Spoofhounds scored on a long pass and converted the two point try for a 15-14 victory. Back home for a game with Auburn, the Tigers scored first but missed the extra point. The defense held the Bulldogs scoreless all night, but a fumble in the end zone enabled the Bulldogs to score and defeat the Tigers 7-6. After two one-point losses, the Orange Pride was really fired up for the homecoming game with Hiawatha. On a rain-soaked field the Cats plowed their way to a 20-6 victory, racking up over 300 total yards on offense. Back on the road again for two games, the Orange picked up an easy victory at Plattsmouth with each member of the back-field scoring a touchdown and the defense adding another for a 31-6 victory. At Nebraska City the Tigers met the seventh ranked team in the state and fell to a 32-7 loss After a 53-0 loss to Crete in 1968, the Orange were out for revenge on another cold, rainy night. The Tigers’ offense dominated the entire game as the defense held the Cardinals scoreless for a 35-0 win. The Tigers were practically unstoppable during the last game of the season at Syracuse as they scored three times on offense and four times on defense. The locals allowed only one score on an intercepted pass for a 47-6 victory. 95 Coaches The Varsity Coaches for the “Pride’s” ‘69’ football season were Head Coach Larry Munn and Assistant Coach Len Janik. The 1969-70 Falls City Tigers began the season on a winning note, defeating Syracuse 52-46. The next few games proved rather discouraging, however, as the Orange Pride lost seven consecutive games before Coach Linquist was able to come up with a winning combination in Fred Ivey, Chuck Whitney, Neal Koenig, Jim Joy, and Gil Sanborn. Against Tri-County the Tigers erupted for an 81-67 victory, and the following night they soundly defeated a good Tecumseh team 87-70. The Orange Pride finished the season in a convincing fashion, winning six of their last eight games including an impressive 75-61 victory over arch-rival Auburn in the regular season finale. In the district tournament the Tigers drew Geneva, the seventh-ranked team in the state, and were defeated by them 75-65 in a game that was much closer than the final score indicated. Even though the Tiger’s record was only 7-10, they enjoyed their most successful season since 1964. 98 Coaches Eldon Linquist Ron Fecht Varsity Season Record Falls City 52 Syracuse Opponent 66 33 Auburn 65 66 Nebraska City 77 57 UJaVerty 65 75 Wymore Southern 96 67 Hiawatha 78 67 Ralston 67 65 PatVnee City 57 81 Tri County 67 87 Tecumseh 70 67 Platts mouth 57 57 Nebraska City 55 56 Crete 69 78 Fairbury 85 60 Sabetha 63 75 Auburn 61 65 Geneva 75 Jim Joy scores over two Nebraska City defenders as Neal Koenig waits for the rebound.
