It seemed practically impossible for a person to have such a dream as the one I had. It all happened night before last. I was in my room listening to my radio when I dropped into a deep slumber. When I awoke I suddenly realized that I had had a dream of each and everyone of my classmates of the graduating class of '59. I remember it all very plainly. The dream was just as though it were all true. Maybe it was. Yes, maybe I prophesied the future of my Senior Class. I distinctly remember that the year was “1989. The first persons I remember were Charles Arnold and Robert Bertram. It seemed as though Charles had become the manager of Robert, who was known as “Bomb Shell Bertram, and who hadn’t lost a fight in ten years. Next, I saw Dale Bachman, who was the president of his well-known organization for girls called “Bachman’s Charm School’’ with Jean Roberts as his leading associate. Then there were Ron Bauer and Larry Dunn, who owned their own taxi service which was very successful; only I understood they were having a little argument over which was more durable, Plymouths or Fords. Gary Bierman was manufacturing car cushions for people who found it difficult to reach the car pedals. Jeanette Bowers, who had just recently been discovered by Hollywood, was playing the leading lady of “The Great Dracula.’’ Betty Carter had her own champion baseball team in her home-town, Falls City, and I understood they called themselves the “Home Run Bear Cats.’’ Ronald and Donald Dodds had just recorded a new record which was an old favorite called “Me and My Shadow,’’ which I understood was climbing to the top. Elaine Clark, Carolyn Ebel, and LaRhue Ramsey were the members of the Falls City High School with Robert Franklin as their superintendent; I understood they had nothing but honor students. Paul Fisher had become the World’s Greatest Lion Tamer for the Ringling Brothers Circus with Kenny Smith as his assistant. Elaine Dorr had just finished her book on “How to Eat and Digest Your Food Properly,’’ for those who desire to grow strong and healthy. Raymond Kirkendall, “Pete’’ Kirkendall, an y Ronnie Wissman had had their fill of girls and had left for the Foreign Legion, never to return. Barbara Goodell was running her own drugstore for ADULTS ONLY. Dick Pickard and Maynard Speers had risen from bell boys to managers in one of the world’s most exclusive hotels. Guess it pays to be Bell Boy, doesn’t it? Deanna Stevens had just been given an academy award for her outstanding acting ability. For a cheaper and more convenient way, Ron Kelley, Larry Stednitz, Dennis McBride, and Roger Still were still trying to pave a short cut to the Kansas border. Carolyn Iwig and Doranne Schmidt were still trying to find a way to get off the farm. Beverly Vaughn, Francis Lock, and Carol Nanomantube had become respectable members of the Ladies Aid in Hiawatha, Kansas. I understood that Melva Williams and Nedra Winsor owned the biggest horse ranch in Texas. Raymond Huebner and Bob Meinzer, who had once been little boys on the farm, had become two of the world’s leading scientists. Georgia Kirkendall had produced a new type of chewing gum called “Snappymint especially for those who get carried away with their gum chewing. Ona Klema had her own T.V. show, in which she answered any questions on the World Affairs. Larry Kulhman and Eldon Vonderschmidt were the idols of all little kiddies mainly because of their Huckle-Berry Hound T.V. Show. Virginia Stalder was the mother of ten little red-haired kids. Poor Virginia, oh well, that’s the way the cookie crumbles. Judie Sickel’s little giggle was worldly known as the Woody Woodpecker’s famous chuckle. I understood that if anyone was in need of a good, dependable baby sitter they were to call Bill Von Seggern. They said he was the best. Joan and Marion Liebsch had just finished a book on “How to Get Along with Sisters.” Ronnie Schuetz and Peg Sailors had finally come to the end of their mad-dog killing. I understood that their trial was due any day. Willie and Wallie Piper were running their own gymnasium for Better Body Building. Darrell Rhod was selling hot tamales in Tijuana, Mexico. Mary Robb was manufacturing “sickles” for those who desired to keep the weeds out of their gardens. Shirley Ruch and Harriett Murphy had just won awards for being the most oustanding housewives in America. Patty Dean had become one of the world’s most outstanding opera singers. Barbara Cochran had just invented a rubber car that bounced off any objects that got in her way. Deborah Wise was the secretary for Falls City’s KTNC Radio Station. Faye Witt was successfully managing her own orchard, and I understood she specialized in “Chestnut” trees. Donna Tubach was worldly known as the “lonely poet.” It seemed as though she was trying to escape her kind of life and become a more exciting person. Dorothy Picton was playing nursemaid to one of the most famous artists. Bobbie Garretson owned her own publishing company. Her cook books were well known throughout the United States. Fred Gilbert had gone to Hollywood only to look for Hollywood’s newest actress, the leading lady of “Dracula.” Donald Harmon had just won an award for having the best taste in color combinations. Bonnie Hunker and Joyce Zimmerman were still trying to dodge large crowds. It seemed that they still hadn’t overcome their “blushing” habit. Carol Prior had become another Clara Barton. Last year she was on the front line rescuing the soldiers. I always knew she would amount to something. Rosalie Rannebeck had won the national championship on being the fastest woman racer in the world. Lois Rowell was her coach. Joan Schulenburg had become a very outstanding hair dresser in New York City. Betty Lutz had just won the grand prize for the longest talker in the world. Sherry Wilhelm was the manager of the Oil City Theatre in Falls City. At the same time she had become a very outstanding housewife. Wayne Lewis had become a leading citizen of Falls City. I understood he had become a lawyer with Roberta Wiltse as his secretary. Jerry Linscott and Dona Friesen, who I understood were united in marriage, are both very happy. Jerry was still stuffing wieners, but I got the idea that Dona was trying to persuade him into selling John Deere tractors. Roxanne Kirkendall had become a very efficient farm wife. I understood she also had a very nice little family. Gary Cowperthwait owned a string of Phillips 66 Gas Stations all over Nebraska. I heard that his business was doing great. Ronnie Ireland had become mayor of Falls City and he and his family had become very successful. Elaine Lewis had done quite well for herself. She was the wife of the President of the United States. Mick Mumm had just this year started to work. People always said he was lazy, but I always knew he would work sometime. All I can say is “good for him.” Bonnie Kessler and I were the last two to step into the picture. It seemed that we were partners in the management of the Mutt and Jeff Drive Inn. Our business was doing great and we were quite successful. Well, that was my dream. I am sure you will agree with me that it was a very strange sort of happening. Who knows what the future may bring? It all may come true. Linda Wickiser. The season started out successfully with a victory over Beatrice. The next two games brought doom to the Bengals with successive losses to Atchison and Auburn. The Tigers then started rolling offensively for four straight victories. Three of these were in the Twin Rivers Conference which Falls City won for the second straight year with a record of four victories and one tie, ending the season with a 5-3-1 record. FALLS CITY—19 BEATRICE—6 The Tigers exploded for two first quarter touchdowns which required only eight carries of the pigskin, then played good defensive ball to emerge victorious. The running of Gilbert, Stednitz and Kelley and the defensive play of Brown, Kirkendall and Gil-kerson were a big factor in the victory. FALLS CITY—0 ATCHISON—25 Falls City missed an early first quarter touchdown then never recovered as the Redmen rolled for twenty-five points. Atchison had a big, rugged ball club and it was no disgrace for the Bengals to go down in defeat. The ball handling of Bob Brown and the running of Stednitz and Kelley were the highlights of Falls City. FALLS CITY—8 AUBURN—20 Fumbles, injuries and Gary Dalton proved to be the down fall of the Tigers in a grudge battle with the Bulldogs. Falls City matched Auburn yard for yard but lost the ball on several scoring marches which nullified any chance for victory. Bob Brown playing with a badly sprained ankle was not up to par and Jerry Linscott, regular guard, missed the action with a bruised leg. FALLS CITY—27 TECUMSEH—7 The Tigers snapped a two game losing streak with a victory over the Chiefs but the win was costly and lost all of its glitter when halfback Fred Gilbert was lost for the season with a shoulder separation. The Tigers got off to an early lead, then poor defensive play forced them to hang on for the victory. FALLS CITY—41 PLATTSMOUTH—19 Larry Stednitz ran for five touchdowns and accounted for two-thirds of the ground yardage to lead Falls City past the Blue Devils. Bob Brown was lost for the remainder of the season with a knee injury. The defense showed a marked improvement over the previous game with Jerry Linscott returning to action and Gary Kammerer making his debut in the varsity lineup. FALLS CITY—31 NEBRASKA CITY—13 The Tigers stopped two-fourth quarter kicks by the Pioneers and turned both into Falls City touchdowns for a Twin Rivers victory over arch rival Nebraska City. Larry Beasing, making his varsity debut, did a splendid job at quarterback. Kirkendall, Still, and Stednitz played good defensive ball. FALLS CITY—40 CRETE—26 One of the wildest scoring ball games at Falls City High in many a season saw the Bengals out run Crete in a Twin Rivers contest. Kelley ran for three touchdowns and passed to Tom McGuire for two more to lead the Tigers offensively. Ronnie Harris also showed much improvement in this game. FALLS CITY—28 OMAHA CATHEDRAL—33 The Tigers put on a defenseless showing to allow the Cardinals to win their first athletic contest with Falls City since the relationship started. The only highlight of the game was three touchdown passes from Harris to McGuire. Stednitz received a hip injury early in the game and had to be removed. FALLS CITY—0 FAIRBURY—0 Falls City closed out the season with two goal line stands to again go undefeated in the Twin Rivers Conference. Although outplayed through most of the game the Tigers rose to the occasion when the chips were down. It was the final game for Kirkendall, Kuhlman, Lewis, Linscott, Still, Kelley, Stednitz and Gilbert. THE 1958-1959 BASKETBALL SEASON Eighteen men reported to Coach Henderson for the start of the 1958-59 basketball season. Bill Von Seggern was the only senior among the group and Brown, Harris and McGuire the only returning letter-men; however, Brown was unable to compete because of a knee injury suffered in football. John Boswell, a transfer from Bassett, Nebraska, was a newcomer to the squad and broke into the starting lineup. The season proved to be a long one for the Bengals. Although they played well at times and lost several close games the season’s record was 5 wins and 12 losses. This was good for second place in the Southeast Conference and a tie for third in the Twin Rivers. FALLS CITY—37 SEWARD—47 The Bengals started out good in the opening game but faded in the fourth quarter to lose the opener to the Blue Jays. Harris topped Falls City scoring with 18 points. FALLS CITY—39 HIAWATHA—31 The Bengals bounced back from their initial loss to whip the Hiawatha Indians in a slow low scoring contest. Harris again was high for the Tigers with 16 points. FALLS CITY—66 TECUMSEH—36 The Tigers broke a long time jinx and hit their scoring peak of the season by routing Tecumseh on the Indians own floor. It was the first victory on that court since 1952. Von Seggern w'as high with 20 points followed closely by Harris with 16 and McGuire with 15. FALLS CITY—40 BEATRICE—68 After a good first quarter the Tigers fell completely apart and absorbed one of the worst defeats in Falls City history. Boswell led the Tigers with 13 points. FALLS CITY—44 CRETE—48 The Bengals forced the Crete cagers into a ball control act to save the game. Although they were never ahead the Tigers pushed the Cardinals until the final seconds. Harris had 13 points for Falls City followed by McGuire with 11. FALLS CITY—56 PAWNEE CITY—41 The Tigers had a hot night at the basket to beat a good Pawnee City ball club. It was probably one of the best performances of the year. McGuire led the scoring with 22 points. FALLS CITY—27 FAIRBURY—33 The Tigers could not buy a basket as they lost a Twin Rivers contest to a poor Fairbury team. Falls City did not have a player in the double figures and wound up with the lowest point total of the season. FALLS CITY—56 NEBRASKA CITY—38 In a game played personally for Bob Brown the Tigers out fought and out scored the rival Pioneers in by far their best game of the entire season. Von Seggern, McGuire, Boswell and Harris all scored in the double figures to assure the victory. FALLS CITY—35 UNIVERSITY CITY—41 Throughout the season the Tigers seemed to blow hot and cold. This was one of the cold nights and they dropped a decision to the visiting Tutors. McGuire was high for Falls City with 9 points. FALLS CITY—53 OMAHA CATHEDRAL—59 The Bengals had trouble with the Cardinals’ full court press and though coming back strong were unable to catch the Cathedral ball club. Boswell was high for Falls City with 15 points. FALLS CITY—37 PIUS X—48 In the second game of the road trip the Tigers again went ice cold and dropped a decision to the Lincoln ball club. McGuire was the only player to hit with any consistency and ended up with 15 points. FALLS CITY—47 AUBURN—49 The Tigers out fought the Bulldogs from Auburn but faded in the second overtime to lose one of the most thrilling games of the season. Harris had 19 points for Falls City. FALLS CITY—41 OMAHA WESTSIDE—58 The Tigers ran into a red hot Warrior ball team and though playing well could not keep pace with the Westside shooters. McGuire again was high with 13 points. FALLS CITY—53 PLATTSMOUTH—42 The Tigers ended a five game losing streak by belting the Blue Devils in a Twin Rivers conference game. Von Seggern was high for Falls City with 18 points. FALLS CITY—46 AUBURN—53 In a return match with the Bulldogs on their own court, the Tigers fought from behind but could not catch the Auburn team. Harris was high with 15 points. FALLS CITY—46 BELLEVUE—48 An eleventh hour comeback bid fell two points short as the Bengals closed out the regular season with a loss to Bellevue. Boswell was high for Falls City with 16 points. DISTRICT TOURNMENT FALLS CITY—40 CRETE—66 In the first and only game of the district eliminations the Tigers were smothered by a tall Cardinal team. McGuire was high with 10 and Von Seggern playing his last game for Falls City had 6 points.
