SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY “It’s later than you think” — This old phrase hit me one day when I was wondering what the old days back in 1958 were like. I think I saw it in the Trans-planetary Paper which was called the Omaha World Herald in those days. This headline above a picture of land, cars and houses in the future seem out of place in this age of 1988. Everything happens so quickly you wonder how a man could read and realize what is going on on the planets. The little town of Falls City, Nebraska, has much credit due to it for the education it gave to the class of 1958. Why you would be surprised at what some of those classmates of mine are doing now. I would say they almost run around the world. The great skills and professions of that class turn the wheels of progress now. Just sitting here on my foam rubber floor I can think of great names that came from that class of “58.” It doesn’t seem so strange now that they are famous but it would have probably seemed strange in those days. Just think of names like . . Helen Arnold, the world’s smartest animal doctor, who travels from this country to planets treating air sick animals. How about Marvin Arnold, who invented the feeds for cattle that make them produce up to 10 gallons of milk more a cow per day. It is said that he owns a feed factory, too. The Alice Bachman Pill Factory has been sued by the Margaret Franklin Pill Factory for claims of stealing a carrot pill formula which was discovered by Marilyn Hinz and known to be worth millions. Verba Baker’s General Mills finally did away with Betty Crocker. Marjorie Bauer and Edith Baudendistel are writing books on “Love with Moon Men.” They are making a great hit with the women. Beryl Brown has just signed a contract to install colored Television telephones in all the homes in Falls City. Naomi Bedwell Brown has no comment on this fact. There has been a large amount of advertising about Nancy Zimmer’s new Magnetic Atomic Lipstick that lures the men to her as well as hangs on and doesn’t let them go. Roger Black, Bill Marx, Harry Vohl, and Merlin Martin must have thought they had something in common for they own the large new style car which is made of rubber so that when it runs into something it does not dent or hurt the driver or passengers. Doug Halbert has been in the construction business and has just signed a contract to have all back roads paved. Larry Vinsonhaler has just received a patent on his new built-in shoe deodorizer; Sharon McCoy Vinsonhaler says, “they’re the best!” Larry Law and Jerry Foster have established the world’s largest Body. Fender, and Motor Shop at Shubert, Nebraska, with all kinds of secretaries. Deanna Darling has established a date bureau. Modern Information Concerning any BOY. John Sauer is known to have the largest neon sign in the world advertising his motto, “Eat SAUER Kraut!” Leonard Rieschick is attempting to beautify our countryside by introducing the custom farmers of painting cows and pigs to match the landscape. Barbara Jahn owns and operates the “Jahn Diaper Co., Inc.” Richard Johnson, well known psychologist and physiologist, is now studying a way to study hile asleep. Huford Gibson who still lives in the cemetery is known by everyone as the writer of weird stories. Leo’ Koester is going to court to prove to Gail Gerlt that Fords are not made of what they used to be made of. Cheri Drumm and Roxanne Kirkendall are still seeing who can get the most husbands in the shortest time. Jane Kunkel, Kathryn Collier, and Suella Stalder are now running Bob’s Place at Hiawatha. The Mental Institution for people who are not mentally all here is being run by three Falls City graduates, Margaret Helmick, Barbara Haeffele, and Mary Gilkerson; their policy is “SILENCE.” Clinton Bletcher and Ralph Huettner are working for the do-it-yourself factory; it takes brains to sit around and think up things that can be done by othei people. Alan McCoy is now photographer for the Playboy Magazine. Larry Scott is now head of the Little League Baseball Team for the New York Midgets. Brenda Wiar is now ushering radar student, commonly boys, to their classes in outer space. Rose Bauman has won the award for the best flower garden in the United States. Sharon Nolte and Barbara Meinzer are running a lonely hearts club on the Campus of West Point. Larry Sailors and Bennie Sickel are body stylers for General Motors; they finally got tired of Fords. Kenny Orr and Chester Shaw are the top judges in the Miss Universe contest. Janelle Peck has taken over the TV show “The Big Record.” Jim Poage is having a hard time trying to run Friesen Imp. Co., and coach Falls City High while raising a family of 10 boys. David Sorenson and John Deckinger are running the gambling house in Los Angeles and have hired Mary Picton as their cigarette girl. Sondra Oberst is writing books on how to make yourself look younger for the younger men. Donald Lippold is teaching phychology at Kansas University now. His mother recommended it for him. Richard Meinzer has his own Taxi Cab Service in New York. Now he can pick up girls as well as look at them. A new dance school has opened up in Kansas City. Arvid Still is the manager and Duane Merz is the main instructor. Barbara Cochran and Karen Stokes are running a hot rod service station in Hollywood. Elain Shouse Hahn is running for mother of the year. Barbara Wittrock is writing songs for her husband, Elvis Presley. David Schatz is running for the best looking mayor of Hollywood. Linda Bertram and Connie Schmidt are the nutrition experts who put those lucious meals in tiny pills for space travelers. Margaret Campbell is now the main stock holder in Nemaha Valley Co-operative. Well, that should give you a brief summary of what is happening to our Senior Class of 1958. Now I must leave you to get back to my writing since I am known to be the rebirth of Shakespeare. My secretary, Carol Tubach, is probably getting very lazy by now with this little coffee break so that will be it until we meet again. “Let it be as it happens” Gerald Hooper, Jr. SENIOR CLASS WILL We the Senior Class of 1958, of the Falls City High School, being of sound and unusually brilliant minds, and being particularly blessed with greatness, and wishing the same to be retained for the students, school, and faculty do pass on these great talents in our last will and testament. Mr. Andrews — we just leave, with the hope that next year’s seniors will be less trouble. Mr. Weddel — we leave a device to catch the many hooky players which he has been plagued with this year. Mr. Coba — we leave a new super atomic machine to pick up chalk and erasers behind him. Mrs. Cummins — we leave a patent to an in-destructable protractor — also guaranteed to be insured against loss — for her geometry students. Mr. Eckman — we leave a vault to protect his wood alcohol from the shop boys. Miss Fase — we leave all the typing books that have been “borrowed” during the last few years. Mrs. George — we leave a portable stool which folds up so she will always have one at her disposal. Mrs. Hahn—we leave a one-way ticket to Meeker, Colorado, and wish her a happy journey. Mr. Hatch — we leave the hope that his FFA boys aren't Future Flops of America. Mr. Henderson — we leave a bone-crushing football team, a state championship basketball team, and a track team faster than the speed of sound. Mrs. Hoffman — we leave the fountain of youth but really she doesn’t need it for she is youth herself. Mr. Jones — we leave Jean Roberts to help clean up the laboratory the last two weeks. Miss Jorn — we leave the nit-witted freshmen for her to shape into class A English students during their sophomore year. Mrs. Joy — we leave a free hour so that she and various other teachers in the system may be able to continue their coffee hour. Mr. Joy — we leave an algebra class in which all will be able to do problem 52. M rs. Kammer — we would leave a classroom of new-fangled typewriters that make no noise, but she might not be able to get used to it. Mrs. Kinkead — we leave a girls’ glee club that opens their mouths only to sing. Mr. Lindquist — we leave a pitcher of ice water to aid him when his voice is about to give out during one of his fifty-five minute lectures. Mrs. Lunsford — we leave the forgotten thanks for helping and guiding us with our Junior-Senior Prom. Mr. Person — we leave a much improved band and a better school for his being here. Miss Sheehan — we leave the north corner of the third floor for consolation with Miss Shook and Miss Jorn. Miss Shook — we leave her time to write a book which could be entitled, “The True Life Experiences of Our Miss Shook.” Mrs. Sylton — we leave Mrs. George and Mrs. Hoffman to ride home with. They finished the season with a record of eight wins and one loss. The only defeat was to Atchison Kansas on a muddy field by the score of 14 to 6. The Tigers won the Twin Rivers Conference and became the first team to go undefeated in Twin Rivers football play since its inauguration. The high point of the season was the defeat of our arch rival, Nebraska City by 16 to 7, a team that had been undefeated until they met the Tigers. FALLS CITY — 26 BEATRICE — 0 The Tigers had everything their own way in the opener against Beatrice. While the Orangemen did not appear to be too strong, the Bengals looked sharp on both offense and defense. Poage, Gibson, and Gilbert sparked the offense and Wiltse and Thomas the defense. FALLS CITY — 6 ATCHISON — 14 A steady down pour of rain and a slippery field marked the game with the Redmen. Atchison had a large team and fast backs which made it easier for them to operate in the mud. Falls City played good ball but was unable to pass or make any substantial gains through the line. FALLS CITY — 40 PAWNEE CITY — 0 With Falls City leading 26—0 at half time and the reserves playing most of the second half, the Bengals rolled past Pawnee City. All hands played well and the offense was working to perfection as Falls City was never forced to punt during the game. FALLS CITY — 33 TECUMSEH — 0 Falls City scored in every quarter and held the opponents scoreless to ease by the Chiefs 33-0. Fred Gilbert scored three touchdowns and had two others called back. Gilbert and Gibson stood out on offense while Thomas, Wiltse, Poage, and Stednitz sparked the defense. FALLS CITY — 42 PLATTSMOUTH — 19 Falls City scored twenty-one points the first quarter then relaxed and had their goal line crossed for the first time in a conference game. Aside from the momentary let down it was probably the Bengals best performance this far. Gibson played his best game on offense and Bob Person stood out on defense. FALLS CITY — 16 NEBRASKA CITY — 7 The Bengals rated as underdogs by many of the sports writers spotted the Pioneers seven points, then buckled down and never let them past mid-field while padding their own score with sixteen. It was a great display of team spirit and determination. Poage’s kicking kept the Pioneers in the hole all evening. FALLS CITY — 40 OMAHA CATHEDRAL — 6 The Bengals struck early and fast to defeat a powerful Cathedral team that had gone undefeated in the State. It took just two plays and forty-nine seconds for Falls City to score its first touchdown. Beryl Brown was the offensive stand out, scoring three times. FALLS CITY — 26 FAIRBURY — 6 The Tigers broke a seven year jinx by whipping Fairbury on their own field. Again the Bengals struck early to build a twenty to six half time lead. The Jeffs, with their large backs, were hard to stop, but Falls City held four times inside the twenty yard line. Gibson and Poage sparked the offense and Wiltse and Person the defense. FALLS CITY — 20 CRETE — 7 The Bengals clinched the Twin Rivers Crown with this victory. It proved to be the last game for the seniors and they proceeded to put on a brilliant display of football. The generalship and kicking of Poage; defensive play of Person, Wiltse, and Thomas; offensive play of Gibson, Gilbert, and Brown were the answer to a coach’s dream. 1957-1958 BASKETBALL SEASON The football equipment was not completely checked in when Coach Henderson gave the call for basketball candidates. The first game was less than three weeks away and a lot of work was needed to get ready to play. The Tigers started the season with a victory over Seward, however, the first half of the season was up and down, and at the half way mark the record stood at four wins and four defeats. The team then pulled themselves together and finished the remaining seven games on the schedule undefeated. In the District Tournament at Lincoln, they continued to play superior basketball by winning a trip to the State Tournament and stretching their victory string to ten games. The Tigers met Ogallala in the first round of the State Tournament and after putting up a brilliant battle were finally defeated 65 to 60. This climaxed a fine season with a record of 14 victories against 5 defeats. FALLS CITY — 54 SEWARD — 42 Falls City opened the season with a comparatively easy victory. The Tigers pulled away after a slow start and played well defensively. Gibson led the scoring with 19 points. FALLS CITY — 33 HIAWATHA — 38 Falls City had a cold night at the basket and dropped a close one to our Kansas neighbor in a rough and tumble contest. Gibson again was high with 13 points. FALLS CITY — 66 TECUMSEH — 25 The Bengals found the range again to ease past the Tecumseh Chiefs. Wiltse took scoring honors with 21 points. FALLS CITY — 39 BEATRICE — 41 The Tigers played good defensive ball, but the shooting percentage fell off again and they dropped a tough decision to the Orangemen. Gibson was high point with 16. FALLS CITY — 51 CRETE — 65 A red hot Cardinal team literally shot the eyes out of the basket to give the Tigers their w'orst defeat of the season. Jim Poage hit his offensive stride scoring 30 points. FALLS CITY — 87 PAWNEE CITY — 53 The Bengals had a hot night at the basket and rolled over the Indians on their home count. Gibson was high with 31 followed by Poage with 25. FALLS CITY — 61 FAIRBURY — 41 The Tigers saw a comfortable half-time lead in the third quarter then come back strong in the fourth quarter to win a good margin. Poage was high with 21. Wiltse had 17. FALLS CITY — 43 UNIVERSITY HIGH — 48 Falls City had its coldest night of the season and dropped an overtime decision to the Tutors. Poage had 13 and Tom Brown had 11. FALLS CITY — 53 OMAHA CATHEDRAL — 44 The Bengals hit over 40 per cent from the field and came from behind a second quarter deficit to whip the Cards. Poage had 18 and Gibson had 16. FALLS CITY —45 LINCOLN SOUTHEAST — 39 The Tigers played a great defensive game against superior height to squeeze by the Knights. Gibson was high with 19 points. FALLS CITY — 59 AUBURN — 37 Falls City surged in the second half and with the help of 46 per cent shooting rolled past the Bulldogs. Poage was high with 24 points. FALLS CITY — 53 WESTSIDE — 51 Bob Gibson made a basket in the last two seconds to beat the Warriors in an overtime game. It was the most thrilling game of the season. Poage took scoring honors with 23 points. FALLS CITY — 67 PLATTSMOUTH — 41 The Bengals had very little trouble in disposing of the Blue Devils by a wise margin. Poage hit 26 points. FALLS CITY — 63 NEBRASKA CITY — 47 The Tigers won the Southeast crown by out playing the Pioneers. Gibson was high with 20 followed by Wiltse with 15. FALLS CITY — 65 BELLEVUE — 21 The Bengals wound up their season with an easy win over Bellevue. Poage made 23 points. DISTRICT TOURNAMENT FALLS CITY — 53 COLUMBUS — 34 With all hands scoring and playing well, the Tigers got by the first District game. Poage was high with 16. FALLS CITY — 49 FAIRBURY — 33 After a cold start the Bengals whipped the Jeffs for the second time during the season and gained the District finals. Gibson was high with 16 points. FALLS CITY — 43 NEBRASKA CITY — 33 The fighting Tigers literally battled their way past the Pioneers to gain a birth in the State Tournament. Poage and Gibson shared scoring honors with 15 points. STATE TOURNAMENT FALLS CITY — 60 OGALLALA — 65 The Tigers lost a heartbreaker in the first round of the Class A Tournament. They went down fighting and we hate to lose such fighters as Tom Brown, Bob Gibson, Jim Poage and Dave WTiltse.
