We were freshmen in other words, and we were pretty fresh, too. With the help of our sponsors, Mrs. Kline and Mr. Jeffers, we elected the following class officers: Larry Ketter, president; Diane Shipley, vice-president; Joyce Pflaum, secretary-treasurer; and Carol Downey and Bob Dougherty, student activities. Those on the Honor Roll were: Donna Brocker, Donald Dorr, Carol Downey, Phyllis Hahn, David Joy, Larry Ketter, Margaret Lewis, Wayne Morris, Eleanor Motsinger, Joyce Pflaum, Edwina Poteet, Donald Rie-schick, Diane Shipley, Roger Speers, Dennis Steadman, and Ann Stout. Those attending the District Music Contest at Peru and Band Day at Lincoln were Marie Robinson, Ann Stout, Don Dorr, Ronnie Hill, Velma Speers, David Joy, Beverly Bauer, and Dennis Steadman. A large percentage of the boys participated in the sports field. Jere Cochran won a basketball letter, and Don Linscott won a track letter. The remaining part of our class participated in Homemaking, Girls’ and Boys’ Physical Education, F. F. A., and Trades and Industries. On May 25, 1954, we completed the first of four years in which we were to spend in the “brick hospital for the feeble minded.” After a rest of three months, we returned to F. C. H. S. as sophomores on a rainy September Monday morning. Between trips to third floor, we elected our class officers: LaMarr Gibson, president; Sheila Kessler, vice-president; Ann Stout, secretary-treasurer; Nancy Darling and Bill Dykes, activity committee. This year we were very well represented in the extra-curricular activities. In the Band Department David Joy was on the Executive Board; Ann Stout, Beverly Bauer, Dee Ann Vonderschmidt, Don Dorr, Velma Speers, David Joy, Ronald Hill, and Vanetta Sutter went to Peru to attend the District Band Contest. Those who attended the District Vocal Contest were Edwina Poteet, Beverly Bauer, Kenneth Zentner, Don Dorr, Eldon Baker, Rodger Speers, Kay Bauer, Jane Rude, Don Johnson, Dennis Steadman. Edwina Poteet was a member of the Dozenettes. Nancy Darling was elected the first G. A. A. officer from our class. Jere Cochran and LaMarr Gibson won football letters and Jere also won a basketball award. Members of the F. F. A. were Wilbur Chestnut, Kenneth Zentner, John Werner, Dennis Merz, Robert Howe, Gary Goll, Ronald Kirkendall, and Don Rie-schick. Those who showed their intellectual ability being on the Honor Roll were Joyce Pflaum, Edwina Poteet, Jane Rude, Diane Shipley, Margaret Lewis, Ann Stout, Eleanor Motsinger, and David Joy. With this we left F. C. H. S. for three months to recover from the biology brain washing we received from Miss Shook. We re-entered the sacred institution for the third consecutive year. Those who led us to victory in many fields also helped us with our class activities. Our sponsors were Miss Shook, Miss Fase, Mrs. Hahn, Mrs. Kinkead, and Mr. Person. Our class officers were: Margaret Lewis, president; Eleanor Motsinger, vice-president; Joyce Pflaum, secretary-treasurer; and Diane Shipley, Jim Fisher, and Larry Ketter, activity committee. Students attending Band Day at Lincoln, Peru Band Clinic, and District Music Contest at Peru were Virginia Bowman, Carol Vogele, Diane Shipley, Jane Rude, Nancy Darling, Beverly Bauer, Margaret Smith, Margaret Lewis, David Joy, Don Dorr, and Dee A nr. Vonderschmidt. Students participating and winning awards in the Peru Speech Contest were Virginia Bowman, and Jerry Lunsford. We saw athletic ability in our high school go down in history with the winning of the Class “A” Basketball State Championship. Those who made the trip to the Lincoln tournaments were Don Campbell, LaMarr Gibson, and Larry Ketter. Football letter winners were John Werner, Bill Dykes, LaMarr Gibson, Larry Ketter, Donald Linscott, Jerry Lunsford, and Roger West. Track award placers were John Werner, Ervin James, Larry Ketter, and Don Linscott. Werner qualified in the state meet in the 440-yard dash. Under the direction of Mrs. Gatz, we presented our class play — “Curtain Going Up.” The cast was made up of Virginia Bowman, Joyce Pflaum, Carol Vogele, Don Law, Don Linscott, Dennis Merz, Sheila Kessler, Vanetta Sutter, Diane Shipley, Jane Rude, Geraldine Koester, Eldon Baker, Kenneth Zentner, Eleanor Motsinger, Gary Goll, Larry Ketter, John Werner, LaMarr Gibson, Don Dorr, Louise Schnute, Alice Eickoff, Nancy Darling, Margaret Lewis, Margaret Smith, Bill Dykes, Gerald Peck, Don Rieschick, Beverly Bauer, Lois Finner, and Carol Downey. Junior Girls who won their First State Awards were Joyce Pflaum, Kay Eickoff, Diane Shipley, Eleanor Motsinger, Carol Downey, Nancy Darling, Sheila Kessler, Margaret Lewis, Margaret Smith, and Retta Moore. Diane Shipley and Eleanor Motsinger were on the cheerleading squad. Throughout the basketball season we raised money for our Banquet by taking over the concessions since our class was so small and since our class dues would not cover the costs of all the expenses. On April 28 we honored the Seniors, the faculty, and the Board of Education with an elegant banquet and dance. Our theme was “Under the Big Top”; Larry Ketter was the Head Ringmaster. Margaret Lewis gave a welcome and David Weaver, Senior class president, gave the response. It was one of the most colorful and most enjoyed banquets in years. Those who made the Honor Roll were Jane Rude, Carol Vogele, Virginia Bowman, Joyce Pflaum, Don Dorr, Larry Ketter, Alan Tubach, Don Linscott, Wayne Morris, Ann (Stout) Kelley, Phyllis Hahn, Eleanor Motsinger, Margaret Smith, Bill Dykes, David Joy, and Margaret Lewis. Members of the F. F. A. were John Werner, Kenneth Zentner, Wilbur Chestnut, Don Rieschick, Robert Howe, Dennis Merz, and Donald Kirkendall With this we completed a most successful and eventful year. On September — we began our last nine month stretch after a three month rest. Among our new leaders, we had a new principal — new to us that is. With the help of our sponsors, Mr. Sympson, Mr. and Mrs. Cummins, Mr. Jones, and Mr. Person, we elected our class officers: Larry Ketter, president; Don Dorr, vice-president; Carol Downey, secretary-treasurer; and Eldon Baker, LaMarr Gibson, and Sheila Kessler, activity committee. Some of us were heard in all sorts of dramatics, even at the District Speech Contest. Those making the trip to Peru were Diane Shipley, Virginia Bowman, Beverly Bauer, Jane Rude, Bill Dykes, Margaret Lewis, Alan Tubach and Larry Vinsonhaler. The boys were not the only letter winners. In G. A. A. Carol Downey, Nancy Darling, Sheila Kessler, Margaret Lewis, Retta Moore, Eleanor (Motsinger) Campbell, Joyce Pflaum, Diane Shipley and Margaret Smith won their Second State awards. Karen Shulenberg won her First State Award. G. A. A. officers were Diane Shipley, Eleanor (Motsinger) Campbell, Margaret Lewis, Carol Downey, Margaret Smith and Nancy Darling. Coach Robert Henderson 1956 FOOTBALL SEASON Coach Robert Henderson made his debut by having eighty boys report for football at the beginning of the season. Of that large group only one was a regular starter in the 1955 season. What the group lacked in experience they seemed to make up in enthusiasm. Along with those eighty boys Assistant Coach Fred Peterson also made his initial appearance as a Falls City mentor. Unaided by the excessive heat and dry weather the boys worked hard to get in shape, preparing for the opener with Beatrice on September 14. The Tigers finished the season with four wins, four losses and two ties. The season’s opener ended in a tie with Beatrice 6 to 6, followed by a loss the next week to Atchison, Kansas 19 to 7. The third game proved an easy win over Pawnee City 52 to 6 and the fourth game a scoreless tie with Tecumseh. Plattsmouth then fell victim of the Tigers 38 to 6 and the Bengals pulled a hot one from the fire from Nebraska City 13 to 6. Auburn pulled an upset by outscoring the Tigers 12 to 0 but the following week the Bengals came back to win over Omaha Cathedral 42 to 0. The last two games were fought with powerful Fairbury and Crete ending in losses of 12 to 0 and 41 to 6. FALLS CITY —6 BEATRICE — 6 The Tigers opened the season playing Beatrice to a tie ball game. It seemed at first as if it would be a long night for the Tigers when Beatrice went for a touchdown in the first 3minutes but Falls City came back in the second quarter to tie the game. Both teams played good defensive ball. FALLS CITY —7 ATCHISON —19 The Bengals got off to a slow start having the ball only 3 times the first 14 minutes and lost 2 yards in that series of downs. The team, though, came to life in the second half but couldn’t catch the Redmen. Beryl Brown played well on offense for the Tigers. FALLS CITY —52 PAWNEE CITY — 6 With the first game at home Bob Henderson’s men played both good offensive and defensive ball. With a score of 26 to 6 at half time the reserves saw a lot of action the last two quarters. FALLS CITY —0 TECUMSEH — 0 The Bengals were met by a high spirited Tecumseh eleven who held the Tigers to a scoreless deadlock. The Tigers were on the one yard line of Tecumsen three times but never succeeded in punching it over. Falls City was on the one yard line at the end of the game. FALLS CITY —38 PLATTSMOUTH—6 The Bengals clicked on all cylinders in cutting down the Plattsmouth Blue Devils. The reserves saw action in the last two quarters. John Werner and La-Marr Gibson made two touchdowns while Don Linscott and Bob Gibson made one each. FALLS CITY —13 NEBRASKA CITY — 6 Falls City came from behind to whip Nebraska City. John Werner made the two touchdowns which carried the Tigers on to victory. The Tigers played very good on defense this night. FALLS CITY—0 AUBURN — 12 The Tigers were met by a fired up Auburn crew. The Tigers played good at times and bad at others. The Tigers threatened several times but couldn’t punch the ball over. FALLS CITY—42 OMAHA CATHEDRAL —0 Falls City went against a very poor Omaha team. After a 21 to 0 first quarter score, Falls City had little trouble in the last three quarters of the game. FALLS CITY —0 FAIRBURY —12 Falls City W’ent down to Fairbury in a hard fought battle. Falls City’s fumble and an intercepted pass by Fairbury set up its two touchdowns. Falls City was stopped several times within the ten yard line of Fairbury, and were not able to advance any farther. FALLS CITY — 6 CRETE — 41 The Tigers had a hard time of it this night which seemed as if nothing would work. Dykes, Gibson, Ketter, Linscott, Lunsford, Werner, West, and Fisher played their last ball game for the Tigers. They had lost their All-State center and did not have a boy out over six foot tall. The Tigers got off to a bad start by losing to Northeast by a very close margin and also being defeated the next two games. The Tigers then started to roll by winning the next three games until being set back by Lincoln Teachers. The Tigers finished the season on a four game winning streak which Bob Henderson’s boys really worked to get. We met Nebraska City in the first game of the Regional tournament and came home with a victory. The Tigers met Omaha Westside in their second game and beat them to go into the semi-finals. In the final game Falls City met a very fine Holy Name team. The Tigers had a cold night from the floor, and Holy Name went on to defeat the Tigers and win the State Tournament in Class A. Statistics show 11 wins and 8 loses for a very successful season. We are greatly impressed by the wonderful coaching of Robert Henderson and Fred Petersen during the past season. FALLS CITY —46 NORTHEAST — 50 Falls City played Northeast right down to the final gun before losing out. The Tigers played well for the first game of the season. Poage had 21 points for top scoring honors. FALLS CITY —42 TECUMSEH — 53 It was a close game all the way. It was 25 to 25 at half time but after the half the Bengals hit a cold streak hitting only 14% of their shots. The scoring honors went to Tom Brown with 13 points. FALLS CITY —41 BEATRICE — 59 Falls City could not compete with the tall Orangemen. Falls City could not get many rebounds from the tall men and adding to the fact that the Tigers were not hitting up to par they went down in defeat. FALLS CITY —48 SEWARD —41 The Bengals won the first ball game of the season. Falls City played a rough and rugged ball game all the way. Bob Gibson took scoring honors with 16 points. FALLS CITY —54 PAWNEE CITY — 34 The Bengals got off to a slow start when they could not hit the basket. They came to life in the second half and pulled away from Pawnee City. Score-ing honors went to Jim Poage with 24 points. FALLS CITY —54 FAIRBURY — 36 The Tigers played a good game of defense to win their third straight game from a much taller Fairbury club. High scorers were Bob Gibson with 19 points and LaMarr Gibson with 12 points. FALLS CITY —58 NEBRASKA CITY — 69 Falls City played its best game of the season, but lost out to a sizzling hot Nebraska City club. Bob Gibson with 25 points and Jim Poage with 15 points were the only two that could hit constantly. FALLS CITY —39 LINCOLN TEACHERS —52 Falls City playing one of its bad ball games went down in defeat to a very good ball club from the capital city. Bob Gibson was high with 11 points with Poage right behind with 10 points. FALLS CITY —52 OMAHA CATHEDRAL —50 The Bengals had a very close one in which Falls City had to go into an overtime to pull out in front. Bob Gibson saved the day for Falls City by making 6 points in the overtime. Poage took scoring honors with 19 points followed by Bob Gibson with 17 points. FALLS CITY —61 LINCOLN SOUTHEAST —57 The Tigers played a good brand of ball as they beat a very good team from the capital city. In the scoring column were Poage and Bob Gibson with 24 and 18 points respectively. FALLS CITY —64 OMAHA WESTSIDE — 74 The Bengals lost a real heartbreaker to a red hot Omaha team. Fouls hurt Falls City tremendously with three of the first five fouling out. Scoring honors went to Poage with 27 points and Bob Gibson with 20 points. FALLS CITY — 52 CRETE — 55 The Tigers played right down to the final buzzer before being downed by Crete. It was a hard fought battle all the way with Falls City ahead the first three quarters but fell behind in the last quarter. Poage and Bob Gibson with 18 and 16 points respectively were the high scorers. FALLS CITY —61 PLATTSMOUTH — 37 The Bengals had an easy time of it by downing the Plabtsmouth Blue Devils 61 to 37. The reserves saw action in this game. FALLS CITY — 59 AUBURN — 42 Neither team looked over impressive but the Tigers took an early lead which they were able to keep. Poage led the scoring Column with 21 points followed by Gibson with 13 points and Wiltse with 12 points. FALLS CITY —58 CREIGHTON PREP —56 The Bengals played one of their best games of the season against the giants from Creighton Prep. Falls City collected 38 out of 54 free throws to help lead them to a victory. Poage and Wiltze took scoring laurels with 17 each. FALLS CITY —56 BELLEVUE — 36 Falls City ended their regular season by dumping Bellevue 56 to 36. All the Tigers gave a good performance in the last scheduled game. DISTRICT TOURNAMENT FALLS CITY —61 NEBRASKA CITY —54 Falls City gained a truly earned win over Nebraska City to advance them to the semi-finals. The Tigers wanted revenge for a previous game which Nebraska City had won. Everyone played his best. Poage with 27 points, Bob Gibson with 12 points, and Wiltse and LaMarr Gibson with 10 points shared the scoring honors. FALLS CITY —54 OMAHA WESTSIDE — 49 The Tigers recorded the second upset by defeating top seeded Omaha Westside 54 to 47. It took every effort from all five to win this one. Bob Gibson took scoring honors with 18 points. FALLS CITY—43 OMAHA HOLY NAME — 50 The Bengals had one of their cold evenings from the floor and could not keep the hot pace set by the Holy Name Club. Everyone played his best even though they went down in defeat. Poage with 18 points and Bob Gibson with 14 points took scoring honors.
