Alma Mater Here's to our dear Falls City We'll love her 'til we die. We'll fight for dear Falls City And hold her banners high. Now all together Comrades We'll sing so joyously For this our Alma Mater true— We'll always fight for you. Fight Song We will fight! We will fight! For the Orange and Black, Fight! Till the battle's won; We will fight! We will fight! For our Alma Mater, Every loyal son and daughter; Give a cheer! Give a cheer! For the Orange and Black, We will see you through— Onward now, keep up the courage. We will win tonight As we fight! fight! fight! for you. DEDICATION-- CAPTAIN ROBERT F. MOORE, JR., U. S. M. C. For a fine school plant and opportunities for learning, the student body of the Falls City High School is truely grateful. Not Pictured: HERSHEL ANDERSON SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS President...................................................................Dick Young Vice-President............................................................Carolyn Little Secretary-Treasurer...................................................Jim Shields Activity Committee..........Vernon Hunzeker, Wayne Nanomantube, Dick Schock SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Four years ago there came into the Falls City High School a new group of Freshmen, green and unaccustomed to the trials and tribulations of high school life. In this respect they were similar to those who had preceded them — but in others they were different and were immediately given the name of being one of the best and most unusual classes in F. C. H. S. To prove this fact, you need only to look further. Under the guidance of Coach Henderson and Mr. Carney, we elected as class officers Wayne Nanoman-tube, president; Dick Schock, vice-president; and Cor-ene Griffiths, secretary-treasurer. During this year Wayne Nanomantube lettered in both football and basketball. This was our most outstanding athletic event. We participated enthusiastically in various activities during our Freshman year and finished with a degree of success — we hope. After a short vacation of three months, the class, now as Sophomores, entered the portals of Falls City High School. Guiding us along the way were Mrs. Cummins, Miss Sheehan, and Miss Join, our class sponsors. As our class officers we elected Charles Kottich as president; Jerry Downey, vice-president; and Milford Kirkendall, secretary-treasurer. Sophomores on the student activity committee were Richard Adams and Wayne Nanomantube. Sophomore boys winning football awards were Ralph Ducy and Wayne Nanomantube. Wayne Nanomantube lettered in basketball. Dick Schock, Vernon Hunzeker, Dick Young. Wayne Nanomantube, Milford Kirkendall, and Bill Dorste received track awards. Cheering the boys on was Joan Pollard, who won a coveted position on the cheerleading squad. During this year many Sophomores took part in the District Music Contest at Auburn. Among them were Shirley Albright, Arleta Durfee, Alice Todd, Dick Schock, Carolyn Little, Elaine Henke, Corene Griffiths, Barbara Colbert, Mary Helen Krueger, Barbara Apel, Elaine Fryer, Dorothy Vaughn, Dolores Groff. JoAnn Joy, Bob Yanike, Charles Kottich, Dean Grantham, Elizabeth Ann Lunsford, Joan Pollard, Lou Rita Sanchez. Terry Vonderschmidt, Jim Shields, Barbara Randall, John Parrish, Richard Adams, Marilyn Schmutzer and Donna Preusse. The next year we walked into F. C. H. S. as upper classmen. Half of our high school career was over, but the best was yet to come. Our Junior class year was begun by electing the following officers: Eddie Huber, president; Alice Todd, vice-president; Keith Herbster, secretary; and Dick Schock, treasurer. Representing us on the student activity committee were Charles Kottich, Milford Kirkendall, and Wayne Nanomantube. Our sponsors for this year were Miss Jorn, Miss Sheehan, Mr. Hatch and Mr. Thomsen. On December 15, the Junior class play, “Tish,” under the direction of Miss Sukovaty, was presented with the following cast: Lou Sanchez, Joan Pollard, Alice Todd, Corene Griffiths, Barbara Randall, Charles Kottich, Dick Schock, Carol Diefenderfer, Terry Vonderschmidt, Carolyn Little, Bob Yanike, Wayne Nanomantube, and Marjorie Meyers. Elaine Henke acted as narrator of the play. Myron Shubert, Donald Stewart, Bob Kratz, and Richard Adams were the stage crew. Elaine Fryer was prompter. The girls earning their first state G. A. A. awards were Shirley Albright, Arleta Durfee, Peggy Eickhoff, JoAnn Joy, Velda Vogt, Beverly Hays, Barbara Randall, Joan Hopp, Joan Pollard, Gertrude Collier, Corene Griffiths, Glenda Zoucha, Lou Rita Sanchez, Donna DeRoin, and Alice Todd. We boasted of five awards in football. They were received by Wayne Nanomantube, Ralph Ducy, Dick Young, Jim Ankrom, and Dick Schock. Basketball letters were given to Dick Schock, Wayne Nanomantube, Vernon Huzeker, and Kenney Prater. Two of our classmates, Joan Pollard and Lou Sanchez, were elected cheerleaders. On May 4, 1951, the Juniors were hosts to the departing Seniors at the annual Junior-Senior Banquet. On September 4, 1951, we again entered F. C. H. S., now as lofty Seniors. To begin our final year, we elected Dick Young as president; Carolyn Little, vice-president; and Jim Shields, secretary-treasurer. The Seniors elected to the Orange and Black Staff were Dick Schock, Charles Kottich, Alice Todd, Bob Yanike. Jim Shields, Donna DeRoin, Carolyn Little, Lou Rita Sanchez. Barbara Colbert, Corene Griffiths, Joan Pollard, Barbara Apel, Glenda Zoucha, Keith Herbster, and Wayne Nanomantube. Joan Pollard and Barbara Apel were elected for cheerleading. Wayne Nanomantube was a fourth-time winner of a football award; Ralph Ducy, a third-time winner; Dick Schock, Jim Ankrom and Dick Young, second-time winners; with three new winners, Richard Adams, Ed Huber, and Bob Wadsworth. Carolyn Little was chosen as “Miss Falls City” at the Hiawatha Halloween Festival. The girls earning their second state G. A. A. awards were Shirley Albright, Arleta Durfee, Peggy Eickhoff, Glenda Zoucha, Joan Pollard, Lou Sanchez, Alice Todd, Donna DeRoin, Joan Hopp, JoAnn Joy, Velda Vogt, Beverly Hays, Barbara Randall, Gertrude Collier, and Corene Griffiths. It was our privilege to be the guests of the Junior class at the Banquet on May 3, 1952. Baccalaureate services were held May 18, 1952, and Commencement exercises were on May 22. The following day we returned to good, old F. C. H. S. for the last time to receive our report cards. This concludes our high school career. With joy and sorrow we turn to the future, always remembering those happy days in F. C. H. S. —Barbara Colbert CLASS PROPHECY OF '52 We recall the day, October 9, 1951, when Superintendent Andrews thrust the big plastic balloon into the air during the Crusade for Freedom Program. Much to our surprise this balloon has returned today, May 23, 1972. I have taken the pamphlets from the balloon and what I have discovered is startling! Falls City is quite a changed little city — the class of ’52 saw to that! Taking the place of the Rivoli Theatre is Hahn’s Chemistry Plant that manufactures donut holes under the direction of the brilliant chemical engineer, Terry Vonderschmidt. Dick Schock is the chief operator of the huge mixing vats, mainly because of his vast experience in chemistry lab. Vernon Hunzeker, besides being janitor, follows Dick around with a fire extinguisher, keeping him from duplicating the feat of Mrs. O’Leary and her cow of the Chicago fire. I learned, also, that Greene’s Drug Store is replaced by Boatman’s Beanery. This thriving enterprise has an enticing floor show starring three dreamy dames — Ann “Hug Me Tight” Pool, Marjorie “Come Up and See Me Some Time” Meyers, and Beverly “Cut a Rug” Hays. Starring in the show are “The Fleet-foot Twins” who, as a sidelight, are housewives taking care of their daughters, Shirley and Arleta. Charles “Dog Meat” Asendorf, the brawny bouncer who makes hamburger out of all the unruly customers, is busy throwing out Marlin Peck, who insists on pinching the cute little waitress, Peggy Eickhoff. And last, but not least, the Torch Singer, Jo Ann Spahr. Ed Huber has taken over the Chevrolet agency and has been so disgusted with small sales that he is negotiating a sale with David, HOTROD HAPPY, Stratton — another motor magnate. I see here where Reverend Ward Reesman and his wife, the former Dorothy Vaughn, are singing a duet, “Onward Christian Soldiers,” for this Sunday Service. Rev. Reesman’s assistant is Robert Ziegler. Robert Kratz leads a dead life — he is the leading undertaker in Falls City, at present. Jerry Downey has established his own beauty salon. His new permanent that the girls are simply daffy about is called “RED’S RAYVE — GUARANTEED TO GIVE YOU CURLY RED HAIR.” If you don’t believe it, just look at Jerry’s! Ralph Ducy went into business for himself, too. But he isn’t making any profit. He seems to be the only one who fully appreciates his exclusive “Sun Beam” brew. Taking Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin’s place in Hollywood now is that fascinating comedy team — Sanchez and Pollard — making quite a hit, I see. Sanchez and Pollard are not the only ones from the ’52 class of F. C. H. S. who are smashing hits in Hollywood. There is “The Great Lover” taking Rudolph Valentino’s place, Ote Prater! Who, incidentally, has all the girls swooning in the aisles. The Eskimos of Iceland are so very pleased with their new pin-up girl — pretty Pat Richmond is the lucky one! Pat has a friend up there, Coleen Zimmerman, trainer of the Eskimo dogs. Because of her sunny disposition KWOS has hired Alice Todd to conduct the MUSICAL CLOCK, starting at 5:00 a. m. Some day we’ll get up early enough to hear you sound off, Alice! I found that John Parrish is now sole owner of what was formerly Barnum and Bailey Circus. There is an extraordinary freak show with such exhibitions as Jim Shields, who contents himself with eating lighted cigarette butts and Keith Herbster, who walks on glass with bare feet, while at the same time, eating Hadicol bottles as if the contents didn’t satisfy him! And what was over in the corner? The sign said “WHERE DID IT COME FROM? WHAT IS IT?” Inquiring about “THE THING,” I found it wis our own Velda Vogt of the G. A. A. The giraffe wasn’t able to come out of his den that particular day for Charles Kottich, then practicing dentistry, believed that the abcess on his second bicuspid may have led to periodontoclausa. Dr. Kottich’s shingle says— “PAINLESS DENTIST — GUARANTEED NOT TO KILL YOU OR YOUR MONEY GLADLY REFUNDED.” Another act is the world famous Byron Meinzer, the “SEAL BOY.” The seals taught him every thing he knows. Behind the clowns I found Donna DeRoin and her educated monkeys, “Speak No Evil Little” — “Hear No Evil Zoucha” — “See No Evil Preusse” — and “Do No Evil Apel.” I was informed that Hershel Anderson has been completely annihilated. Rather than becoming alarmed, the performers merely asked what kind of a car he was driving! Garry Kirkendall, pilot of a radar ship, finds this occupation less hazardous than his former profession of comedian since he had too many narrow escapes from rotten eggs. Flying with him are Karl Lock, Bruce Cooper, Robert Albright, and Ralph Birdsley, who are willing to risk their lives for the worthy cause of flying to the moon. Bob Wadsworth and Merle Joy have found that the only way they can get a kick out of life is by driving mules for an excavation company. Mary Helen Krueger and Jean Gerweck are still working just as hard to get out of work as they ever did! Joy Tucker is teaching gymnastics to the veterans of World War III. What a job! Her specialty is the Worm Walk — guaranteed to reduce your waistline and recede your gums. Carol Diefenderfer took a trip around the world and came back as the wife of the Mexican ambassador to Egypt. She certainly did her bit toward the Good Neighbor Policy! Marilyn Schmutzer, Marceile Nutzman, Doris Bachman and Eileen Hullman are all missionaries among the cannibals of darkest Africa. We wait breathlessly for a letter each week to tell us whether or not they have been eaten alive! JoAnn Joy is now a famous Hollywood actress — following Greta Garbo’s shoes, she still “vants to be alone.” We find Elaine Fryer spends her entire life now at the Aldorf Wastoria answering the call of “Hey, sweetie, give me a pack of cigarettes.” Bob Yanike has his own band now. It is called the “Bobwalkers” and has played jive all over Africa. It has converted the natives to boogy-woogy and the Fiji Islanders now are doing the banana split. Dick Young, who is still in the submarine service, has recently announced his engagement to Minnie the Mermaid, whom he met “Down at the bottom of the Sea.” Joan Hopp and Dick are still going steady. She thinks it wise to wait until they know each other better — twenty years is such a short time! Dolores Groff’s dream man has been upon his knees “umpteen” times, but she won’t promise — how can she say yes when her hope chest isn’t full? Richard Adams is spending some time on one of the Pacific Islands — Alcatraz. Farming makes Kenny Sailors and Milford Kirken-dall dizzy. They get all tangled up in the rotation of crops. “Chief” Nanomantube was making millions until a few weeks ago. His press broke downl Myron Shubert had had a busy day. He graduated from N. U. and applied for his old age pension at the same time. Dean Grantham is a qualified physicist, having received his B. S., Ph. D., C. O. D., P. D. Q., and is now working on his I. Q. Jim Ankrom is still doing the same thing he always did for a living — as little as possible. After ten years Barb Randall has published her ten volume analysis of “Alice in Wonderland.” Gertrude Collier and Elaine Henke’s journalistic ability has stood them in good stead. Their new book, “The Way to Happiness” or “Life Outside of High School,” is a great success. Don Stewart and Norma Runyan have created a new jitterbug step known as the “Worm-eaten Crab Apple.” It’s really mellow! Fastest Man Alive, Bill Dorste, the human bullet of the racetrack — so say the reporters — drives the “Lazy Angel” like a fast fool. Orson Welles didn’t have anything on Corene Griffiths. In her latest production, “Caressing Corene,” she played a dual role. Corky wrote the play, Corky directed the play, Corky produced the play, Corky had the lead in the play — (Who do you suppose painted the scenery????) I took out the last pamphlet. It was as startling as the rest. Barb Colbert is not alive any more. She blew such a resounding blast on her trombone that it backfired ! Lou Rita Sanchez FALLS CITY HIGH SCHOOL STADIUM SENIOR CLASS WILL Last Will and Testament TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: We, the Class of 1952, of Falls City, in the County of Richardson and State of Nebraska, considering the uncertainty of the world about us, and being of sound mind and memory, do make and publish this our last will and testament in the manner and form following, that is to say— First, we appoint R. W. Sympson of Falls City, Nebraska, as Executor of this our last will and testament and do empower him to divide all our personal and real estate property in the manner and form as follows. Second, we desire that all our just debts be paid providing there is enough money in the treasury to pay them — if not we wish that said debts be forgotten. Personally we bequeath as follows— To the Juniors we leave our throne of superiority through which we have so nobly taught the underclassmen how to respect the teachers. To the Sophomores we leave a wheelbarrow to carry their biology books around. To the Freshmen we gladly give the enjoyment of taking the oncoming Freshmen to the country. (Beware of Mr. Weddel’s lectures!) To Mr. Andrews and Mr. Weddel we leave our sincere gratitude for helping shove us over the great cliff of learning. To Mr. Burkel we leave an extra “ice cream suit for those rainy nights out on the football field. To Mrs. Cummins we leave an x-ray machine that will enable her to look into a freshman’s head to see if he has acquired any of her lectures. To Mr. Cummins we leave a supply of nickels to be passed out during his “true-false” tests. To Miss Fase we leave an automatic checking machine to aid her in grading those “errorless typing papers” — one that will detect erasures! To Miss Graves we leave — still tempted by those wonderful odors from cooking lab. To Mrs. Hahn we leave an electric gum disposal. Now your girls will be in gym instead of Study Hall. To Mr. Hansen we leave a first-aid kit in case he should miss a nail sometime in the future. To Mr. Hatch we leave an “easy-to-read” joke book in case he is called on too many times to speak in convocation. To Mr. Henderson we leave a tip. To Mr. Hudson we leave all the underclassmen with their speech defects. Otay, Missr Husson? To Mr. Jones we leave, hoping he will some day get that new super laboratory — the old one is slightly used. To Miss Jorn we leave a year’s supply of gasoline. Those week end trips to Verdon take quite a bit. To Mrs. Kinkead we leave our hopes that in the future an arrangement can be made between her and Mac concerning athletes that sing. To Mrs. Kline we leave all of our knowledge that she put into our heads to those lucky underclassmen. To Mrs. Mackey (the blushing bride) we leave a set of regulations of the armed forces. To Mr. Mclntire we leave our hope that the future will include just as many successful athletic seasons as this one did. To Miss Sheehan we leave a sledge hammer so that she may pound English into the heads of oncoming freshmen. To Miss Shook we leave our nomination for President of the United States — that is, if she’ll admit she’s thirty-five. To Mr. Simon we leave a gross of pencils. After all it’s not his fault he has to write down so many names to report at 4:00 o’clock. To Mr. Sympson we leave our wishes for many years of happy married life. To Mr. Thomsen we leave a “Simon Legree” whip so that he may reduce the noise on second floor in style. Richard Adams leaves his ability to cheat the parking meters to Carl Vanderveen, not that Carl needs any ideas! Robert Albright leaves his cave-man tactics to Charlie Williams. Shirley Albright leaves her blonde hair to Sheila Yoder. Hershel Anderson leaves all the gum under his desk to Ralph Nelson. Jim Ankrom leaves his numerous car horns to Chuck Baker. Don’t break your legs trying to be the first one there, freshmen. Ralph Ducy leaves his “Oakland” to anyone who has enough patience to make it run. Arleta Durfee leaves her angora sweaters to her sister, Twila; on both they look swell. Peggy Eickhoff leaves her perfect form to Marcelle Brauer. Corene Griffiths leaves her school girl complexion to Linda Buthman. Dolores Groff leaves her coalfire socks and jeans to Joan Clumpner. Roger Hahn leaves about one-half dozen girls to look for another ride to school next year. Beverly Hays leaves her freckles to her sister, Pat — I’m sure you appreciate that, Pat. Elaine Henke leaves many boys without sufficient reading material in study hall. Too bad Elaine’s notes were not donated to the school library. Keith Herbster leaves nothing; he lost it all when he started going with Corene Griffiths. Joan Hopp leaves her satisfied air to Helen Witt-rock. Eddie Huber leaves his motherly advice to anyone having love troubles. Eilene Hullman leaves her silence to Gail Ruegge. Vernon Hunzeker leaves his trips to Lincoln to Beaky Jones. Bob Wadsworth leaves to pump air into Ralph Ducy’s tires so they can make that long, long trip to Hiawatha. Bob Yanike leaves his ability to play the saxophone to anyone else who happens to be “great.” Dick Young leaves his position as “official woman hater” to Ernie Ridgeway. Robert Zeigler leaves his affection for Hershel Anderson to one (?) of the weaker sex. Coleen Zimmerman leaves her sweet voice to anyone wishing to become a telephone operator. We sighed — a rather frightened sigh, and perhaps our knees were shaking a bit, for we knew the tales of what had happened to freshmen before us — but, nevertheless, we gallantly trudged up the big steps which were soon to become so much a part of our lives. We made many futile trips looking for the elevator and many of us were carried off by some upperclassman to do “a little something extra.” However, we survived nicely, and to prove we couldn't be licked — with the able help of Miss Graves and Mr. Hansen, our sponsors — we elected Douglas Gibson, president; Ernie Ridgeway, vice-president; and Sally Poage, secretary-treasurer. We even had a voice in the activities and we chose Ann Carter and Carl Vanderveen to represent us. Although we supposedly were small and insignificant, our older brothers and sisters knew we were there because many of us took active part in school activities. You could see our faces in physical education, band, glee club, and chorus. When the pictures were taken for the honor roll, many of us were there. Doug Gibson, adding greater fame to our name, won a basketball letter, and Carol Morehead was elected cheerleader. Our little band of Pilgrims had blazed the trail nicely and we came back in the fall of 1950 ready to do our bit even better than before. First, advised by Mrs. Cummins, Miss Fase, and Miss Shook, we elected the heads of our Pilgrim band. These were: Leah Rae Ketter, president; Charles Baker, vice-president; Helen Wittrock, secretary-treasurer; and Glenda Lunsford and Sarol Wiltse in the activities. We were ready to carry our share of the load; and to prove it Bill Bedwell, Douglas Gibson, Ernie Ridgeway, and Carl Vanderveen earned football letters. Later in the year Douglas Gibson, Delmar Bowers and Bob Norton rallied and lettered in basketball. We sent Doris Hillyer and Virginia Reavis to represent us at the State Band Clinic. Helen Wittrock went, too, but under the chorus department. Carol Morehead again represented us in the cheering squad, and Doug Gibson and Carl Vanderveen earned a letter in track. Our faces were again seen in the many extracurricular activities and on the honor roll. Yes, we had blazed our track a little further through the forest of ignorance. We came back in the fall of 1951 aware of the new responsibility of being upperclassmen. Ready and able to do our job, an older, wiser Pilgrim group, directed by Miss Shook, Miss Fase, Mr. Hansen, and Mrs. Hahn, we elected Glenda Lunsford, president; Charles Baker, vice-president; Leah Ketter, secretary-treasurer; and Bill Bedwell, Virginia Reavis and Carl Vanderveen to augment the activities committee. We knew we had to set a good example for the under classmen, so Charles Baker, Bill Bedwell, Leonard Crawley, Charlie Ebel, Doug Gibson, Dale Huettner, Gene Killingsworth, Gerald Nolte, Bob Norton, Ernie Ridgeway, Carl Vanderveen and Richard Wiedmeir hustled about and earned football letters. Later on, Douglas Gibson, Delmar Bowers and Bob Norton received basketball awards; and in the spring, many of them received letters in track. We elected Linda Buthman and Carol Morehead to represent us on the cheering squad. Virginia Reavis went to the State Band Clinic for us, accompanied by Donna Schatz and Helen Wittrock, whom we sent to the Chorus Clinic. We took a big part in the Cornhusker County Government; we added new names to the honor roll; and we took part in the District Band and Chorus Contests at Auburn. At the District Speech Contest at Peru, George Hunker stepped into the limelight and earned a Superior in his original oration. We girls finally earned some letters, too. Those receiving their first State G. A. A. awards were: Mar-celle Brauer, Shirley Brazau, Ramona Birdsley, Shirley Buchholz, Linda Buthman, Ann Carter, Kay Dewald, Shirley Dodds, Rosalie Finck, Shirley Hamm, Kay Kirk, Elaine Meyers, Carol Morehead, Joyce Miller, Gailya Percival, Virginia Reavis, Donna Schatz, Shirley Stein-hauer, Joyce Wamsley, Sarol Wiltse, Helen Wittrock, Phyllis Yost, Rosalie York and Carole Zentner. On December 14, 1951, at 8:00 p. m. the Junior Class presented — to one of the biggest houses yet, by the way — their play, Street of Dreams, under the direction of Miss Sukovaty. It was a fine play, and we had lots of fun putting it on. Those included in the cast were: Gretchen Green, Ann Carter, Leah Ketter, Betty Bell, Linda Buthman, Carol Morehead, Sally Poage, Carole Zentner. Shirley Buchholz, Charles Baker, Gary Wamsley, George Hunker, Carolyn Raymond, and Jim Dunn. Helen Wittrock spoke between acts, Virginia Reavis was narrator, Rosalie Finck. Georgia Bauer, Helen Wittrock and Jo Ann Clumpner were prompters. Our stage managers were Douglas Gibson and Dale Krause; Kay Kirk and Virginia Reavis were the stage decorators and had charge of costumes. Shirley Hamm had charge of publicity, and Virginia Reavis, tickets. Our last act as juniors, the climax of our first three years, was the banquet which we gave for the seniors on May 3, 1952. We hated to see our senior friends go, but we all had a grand time, even though it was farewell. —And now we Pilgrims are a little tired, as we’ve had a long , hard pull, so we’re going to rest in order that we can come back refreshed Pilgrims and complete the final chapter of our journey next year. —Linda Buthman SOPHOMORES Front row (left to right) : Robert Lewis. Nine lettermen were included in the large squad which reported to Coach Mclntire. The Bengals in winning 7 and losing 2 games, won the coveted Conference Championship. In winning the crown, the tigers displayed outstanding hustle and spirited team play shown to them under the expert tutelage of their very able coaches. The Bengal master worked his squad hard, and when game time came around, he found his spirited hopefuls in fine shape, mentally and physically. The Cats showed their claws in their opening game with Tecumseh to the tune of 33-0. The Bengals lost their next outing to Atchison 18-6. They split their next two games, defeating the defending Conference champs, Pawnee City, 45-6 before losing to Beatrice 34-0. The Mclntire men then set to work and won their last five contests. Two of these defeats were avenged — the Cats beat Fairbury 63-35, and Northeast 38-30. There were many factors which led the Bengal Five up the victory trail.
