Science Mrs. Mable Chapman Biology Department Chairman This department provides for all students to observe and experiment in the limitless fields of science. Attempts are made to fulfill the needs of students with specific abilities and to encour¬ age these students to seek careers in science. The curriculum is planned to emphasize the importance of the major scientific principles and their discovery and application as preparation for the evolving atomic and space age. There are three new instructors in the Science Department—Mr. Feather, Physics; Miss Kiess¬ ling, Biology; and Mrs. Crawford, Biology and Science 9. This year six additional BSCS sections have been added, and activities include the Science Club, the Science Fair, and trips to the Plane¬ tarium. Mrs. Chapman explains “life science.” Page 26

Social Studi es The Social Studies Department welcomed Mr. Fleming, Mr. Sell, Mr. Mandes, Col. Schade, Mr. Yount, and Mr. Larsen to its staff this year. This department offers courses in World Geog¬ raphy, World Flistory, United States and Vir¬ ginia history, American and Virginia Govern¬ ment, and one-semester courses in sociology and economics. Also offered is the American Civili¬ zation class taught by Mrs. McCullough and Miss Wilson. This program emphasizes the cor¬ relation of American history and literature. Col.
