The other years at Falls Church have been memora¬ ble ones; all have contributed their share of the flavor of high school. But the Senior year is special. There is a uniqueness about endings, a precious quality in having reached the last rung of a ladder. For this reason all activities in our Senior year, all the people we have met and known, make, perhaps, the deepest impressions on us. Mr. Mishou, you occupy a special niche in Falls Church, as we have remembered you over all our high school years. Many of us took your Senior civics and those of us who did not, saw you at our class meetings, guiding us in our particular prob¬ lems. You taught us more than Civics and you guided more than our meetings. Instructing us in gov¬ ernment and man’s dealings with his fellow man, you stressed those same rights and duties in your classrooms, insisting upon politeness in class dis¬ cussions toward each of us by the others. And that is why we dedicate our official record of school life to you, Mr. Mishou, for you are a symbol of our Senior year. You stand for all that we have gained in high school, knowledge, not only of books, but of people, which is the rarer form of wisdom. MR. FRANK H. MISHOU Seniors chat with Mr. Mishou. Page J 4 Mr. Mason This year has seen many changes, several of which have been effected by our new principal, Mr. William Leon Mason. Bringing with him from Mount Vernon High School, where he had served as Assistant Principal, the educational ex¬ perience of fourteen years, Mr. Mason has made great strides in establishing his philosophy of edu¬ cation. His intrinsic “belief in teenagers” has caused him to give the students larger and larger parts in the responsibility for their own activities. He has expressed a conviction that most teenagers are capable of assuming their share in the admin¬ istration of our high school and accordingly has created such student organizations as the Student Staff and the Principal’s Advisory Committee of Students. With what Mr. Mason terms “excellent cooperation of faculty and students, this trust has begun to pay its own way, a way that promises a new era of attainment for Falls Church High School. One of Mr. Mason’s most important innovations is the Student Staff. lie is here shown dis¬ cussing school business with three representative Staff members —Gary Wilkins, Harry Woodward, and John Bowers. Page 8 Mr. Barrett __-vjj istant Principal The job of Assistant Principal for Disci¬ pline is a very important and sometimes un¬ pleasant job that Air. Barrett has discharged with both firmness and fairness for many years. He brings teaching experience and a sense of humor to his duties. Besides the problem of discipline, he serves in many other administrative capacities around the school. Altogether, his efforts in the main¬ tenance of orderly routine help to make education at Falls Church High School a most profitable and pleasurable experience. Dr. Day Another new pedagogue has appeared on the Falls Church scene this year. Dr. Orlo Day, our Assistant Principal for Instruction, has assumed the duties of superintending the learning activities of this institution, and has been responsible for many of the serv¬ ices that compose our curricular atmosphere. His educational background, and instruc¬ tional experience in many subjects has en¬ abled him to bring to his duties an ability which has helped our school maintain its steady progress throughout this term. GOTT SARAH WHITE JACKSON B.A., M.A. B.A., M.A. Assistant Librarian Librarian Books have always been an integral part of education; not only school texts, but novels, poetry, science books, encyclopedias. There are books for fun, too. At school, our library provides books of all kinds, and our librarian, Mrs. Jackson, makes sure that each student may read as much as he wants. Helping her are our new assistant librarian, Mr. Gott, and a staff of students trained to run a library so that students and teachers may enjoy and benefit from the world of books. Students are constantly urged to explore other and larger libraries, so that their vision of reading materials is not limited to our own four walls. The cycle has run its course once again, and the un¬ comfortable eighth-graders who watched the Class of ’53 graduate are now ready to don their caps and gowns and leave after five outstanding years. This year they distinguished themselves scholastically by placing final¬ ists in the National Merit and General Motors com¬ petitions. After treating last year’s seniors to a lavish prom, they made the Sadie Hawkins and Homecoming Dances big successes. This year, under the leadership of John Bowers, in his second year as president of the Class of ’57, the class is proud and anxious as it ap¬ proaches the final days of high school. They have sponsored the Night Club Dance, a major social and entertainment event of the year. The Junior- Senior Prom, climax of the school season and annual gift to the Seniors, stood out from all those given be¬ fore. An even more promising year is anticipated for 1957-58. Much needed revenue was derived from the Student Bookstore and the Welcome and Sweetheart Dances. This enabled the Council to publish the Student Handbook and sponsor a Safety Drive (in cooperation with the National Safety Council), a Christmas Drive, and a March of Dimes campaign that broke state records and brought national honor to the school. Through its activities, the SC A has made a significant contribution toward the development of greater prestige for the school. Seated, left to right: Jean Reed, Treasurer; Sue Oakley, Secre¬ tary. ACHIEVEMENTS IN 1956-57 During the 1956-57 school year the Falls Church High School S.P.T.A. took cognizance of the college admissions prob¬ lems arising from the ever-mounting en¬ rollment in the nation’s colleges and uni¬ versities. For the first time — College Night, sponsored jointly by the school ad¬ ministration and the S.P.T.A., was held so that parents as well as students could sit in on the sessions presided over by representatives from many colleges and universities. Later in the year an S.P.T.A. program wa s devoted to a student-parent-teacher panel discussion on scholastic standards which was related to the general problem of admission to colleges. As in the past, the S.P.T.A. provided two scholarships, an Achievements Awards plaque, and financial assistance to a number of school activities. Due to a string of injuries, bad luck, and playing that was some¬ times not as good as that of our opponents, our football team fin¬ ished the 57 season with a 2-7-1 record. Under the guidance of Mr. Paul Weber, back coach, and Mr. Norman Chaudet, line coach, our team was led by such players as Sam Yancy, Jim Into- lubbe, Ralph Round, and Harry Woodward into a season that was sometimes quite disheartening in its defeats. In perhaps our best game, for example, we lost to George Mason, 13-12, after our winning touchdown was called back on a penalty. The situation was similar in the Culpepjaer game. 7 he boys continued to play hard despite their defeats, and exhibited outstanding sportsman¬ ship. We look forward to a team next year with a bit more good luck and the same sense of fair play that has distinguished this year’s team. The pre-season predictions were that F C H S was going to be sadly in need of the sound of leather on wood, and to Coach Todd the hitting came as a very pleasant surprise. After graduation last year we were left with only four return¬ ing lettermen. Other positions were filled ably by ex-JV’s who had received experience on our JV and summer league teams. Another marked change in the team has been an improved team spirit which kept them fighting until the last inning was over. This drive won often for the Jaguars. COACH MR. They started their schedule by tying Hammond and beating George Washington in their first meet, and taking the first step toward a county championship for the second successive year by taking a decisive victory over Fairfax. Some of the outstanding performers on this year’s team were Curtis Click and Bernard Hockey in the distances, Sam Yancy and Herm Schmidt in the pole vault, Bill Forrell in the 440, Bob Pang- born in the broad jump, Matt Murray in the low hurdles and broad jump, and Mike Foley in the shot put and discus Mike Foley throws the discus. Sparked by a team which trained long and fought hard, however, they scored creditably with a 4 - 6 - 0 record for Falls Church High. If one sentence could be used to describe this year’s girls’ softball team, that phrase would be, “It was fun!” Hampered by the inexperience of the team— only two of the girls had held positions previous to this season — the coaches trained and the girls practiced and played with vigor. As to the relative prowess of their various opponents, the team unanimously declared Mount Ver¬ non to be their toughest adversary. COACH MISS M. The annual homecoming game, played against Wakefield High School, was one of the most spectacular of the season. Although one may be misled by the score, the “Jaguars” played an inspired brand of football. Our lovely Queen and her court entered the half-time ceremonies in a parade of cars. During the ceremonies Miss Pat Howard, Queen of ’56, crowned Mrs. Marlene Segelbaum Chew, Homecoming Queen of 1957. That evening the at¬ tractively-attired young ladies of the court, and the Queen herself contributed to the gala atmosphere of the dance, and left an indelible picture in the minds of all who attended. JOAN PINKERTON and JANE TAYLOR, Co-Editors The PAW PRINT has, in a way, grown up with the class graduating this year. It began four years ago when they were freshmen. Each of those four years has seen improvements and new developments. Since the two mimeo¬ graphed issues of 1954, the PAW PRINT has had nine publications. This year’s first issue was a sleek new size and it had eleven more pages than before. The outside was a dark blue and the pages were a lighter shade. The editors and staff this year decided to have a theme for the magazine, and the subject “The Teenager” was explored. The PAW PRINT staff, under the expert guidance of Miss Betty Toone, has tried always to put out a magazine of literary quality, one which is artistically and tastefully produced, one which the students of Falls Church can be eager to read and proud to keep. The first performance of the Falls Church High School Theatrical Season was “Time Out for Ginger” directed by a new addition to the faculty, Miss Lucy Jo Jackson. It was a light comedy about a girl who wanted to plav foot¬ ball on the boys’ varsity football team. Rochelle Goulde played the part of the gridiron aspirant. Paul Kvale and Carole Hilton played the lead roles in the production. Their performances stood out as the father and mother of Ginger. Ginger’s sisters were played by Pam St. Clair and Heather Hanley. Other outstanding players were David Kemp as the High School Principal, Jim Intolubbe as the big masculine football plaver who is enamoured of Joan Carol. Tommy Green as Ginger’s boyfriend, John Bowers as Ed Hoffman, and Carol Robev as the maid also made this outstanding play by Ronald Alexander a hit. The love story of Laurie and Curley played by Gary Wilkins and John Bowers respectively, is the theme. 1 he scene is laid in the territory of Oklahoma before it be¬ comes a state. The play is noted for its good music and refreshing homespun atmosphere. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS MOLLY VICK, Choreographer— McLean School of Ballet. JAMES E. BARHAM, Orchestra Director. Our new principal, Mr. Leon Mason, instituted this year an organization of students, the Student Staff, to put the responsibility for student discipline as much as possible in the hands of the students themselves. With its administration under the direction of the class and SCA presidents, it has gained respect and appreciation among the students for bring¬ ing order to the school, for serving at basketball games, assemblies and other activities. Its success has brought about the formation of the Junior Student Staff, made up of freshmen and sophomores, who will compose the Student Staff of future years. The school may take pride in this example of the ability of teen-agers to handle their own problems. Page 136 a r e lu e if Those of us who are seniors at Falls Church find that a dread and terrible disease is creeping upon us. It is one that was completely alien to us as thetamen at the bottom rung of the ladder of learning. It is one that we ridiculed as sophomores, that we spoke of with apprehension when, as juniors, we saw the last steps ahead of us. Now it has hit us and we’re a little ashamed of it. It is called nostalgia, an ailment pecular to those who approach and pass the final graduation from Falls Church High School. We stand around at the prom parties and stage bull-sessions and start all our remarks with, Remember when . . . or, And there was the time that. . . I he girls cry, and sometimes the boys do, too, wdien graduation comes around. We never say wdiat we feel, because we don t know how to, and w e’re ashamed of it a little bit, afraid w ? e’ll be laughed at for being corny and foolish by friends who are more successful in hiding their sentiment. We stumble and grope for words to express our feelings, and cannot communicate to the underclassmen what it means to leave, can’t say anything to them except, Just you wait a year or two!” It’s hard to say farewell to a school, to thousands of students, some long graduated, some just starting, to teachers and janitors and bus drivers and the grimy walls and inaccurate clock and clanging bells and the thousand in¬ significant things we shall remember, the faces that will blur into hazy images to haunt reminiscence. e can t say just, ‘Goodbye,” because we mean so much more than that. Our Farewell” must contain a Thank-you,” an “I remember,” a “Goodbye,” an “Oh heck! of ashamed deprecation and of realization that all those corny platitudes that last year s seniors piously proclaimed have become real, and, finally, a ‘Hello” to the new memories that will come after the final valediction. With all of these intended, we, the seniors of Falls Church High School who, are at the top of the ladder, looking back, say to everything that goes to make up the lasting soul of a school: FAREWELL Page 139 FROM VIRGINIA FARMS TO VIRGINIA HOMES ALEXANDRIA DAIRY King 9-2525 The Local Dairy” Roger H.
