The present national and international strife exemplifies the desires and conflicts of a seriously divided people. The present belongs to those who govern, but, in truth, toÂŹ morrow must belong to us, the young. Perhaps, some of us from Falls Church High will one day be in a position to alleviate some of the present problems. Our one weapon for this monumental task can only be . . . the power of knowlÂŹ edge. Our factories for the production of this. . . our schools. Today we leave Falls Church High, some to fill their needed positions in the world, others to change and improve the conditions under which the remainder must live. In the meantime, here is the Jaguarâs offering to the future ... a record of our past. They are followed by the priests of the old religions who were the teachers of their time, and the early astronomers and scientists who began the scientific knowledge of the world. As the proÂŹ cession reaches the Middle Ages, the light dims to a faint glow and only a few men pass by, the monks who, hidden away in their monasteries, kept knowledge alive in this age of darkÂŹ ness. The lights begin to grow again, as the Dark Ages pass from view and learning comes to life again. The pro- Our Alma Mater. Through the light come shadows of men, walking in a solemn procession along a trail of learning which begins with time and stretches to infinity. First is primitive man, for with him began knowledge, and with his chilÂŹ dren began education. Next are the Egyptians and the Romans, who are followed by Socrates, walking at a digÂŹ nified pace along the path, accomÂŹ panied by Plato, famous for his great dialogues, and by Aristotle. With them are their students, who went on to inÂŹ crease the knowledge of the world. row aw d Shad O UJ 5 re66 Following in their footsteps. Into the glare of the now-brilliant light come the administrators and teachers of the modern schools, who are perhaps some of the most imporÂŹ tant of all, for they are training the youth in an age when ignorance is death, and knowledge is imperative in the fight to rescue man from his failure to understand man in an age of all destructive weapons. They are great teachers and thinkers and orators, great men of science and letters. In the growing light come the figures of Rousseau and Pestalozzi and Froebel who were the first of the great eduÂŹ cators to believe that students should be taught by understanding and not by punishment. It enÂŹ tails, as we all know, the disciplinary acÂŹ tions of the school. An important factor in life is the learning of self-discipline and control. For the past four years Mr. Barrett has aided and guided us as he has so many others in previous years. We realize the value of his help and are duly grateful. Senior Class History When we seniors entered the eighth grade here at Falls Church, our school was not the plant it is today. We saw the addition of our library and cafeteria during our eighth and ninth grades, and we elected class officers and sponsored dances for the first time. When we were freshmen we held the Dixie Drag, which boasted an outÂŹ standing band. In our Sophomore year the âPaw Printâ had its start and since then has won an achievement rating as a good creative magazine. Our junior year was really a big one for us. We gave the Night Club Dance and the Junior-Senior Prom. After Class Night we became the Mighty Seniors and our busiest year began. By this time our building had expanded again and we had a good gymnasium and auditorium. For four years the school had been holding magazine drives in order to erect some lights on our field. Before we graduated we were to see many exciting night-time football games. We have also seen the extinction of the merit hall and the beginning of an Honor System, which we hope will never have to be replaced. We came into a small school: we leave one of the countyâs largest and most complete. But growth has not stopped. New land has been acquired for playing areas of the future. This is the tradition we leave â growth, exÂŹ pansion, and development of character. Page 14 Seniors â pi! â ARTHUR V. BATES FRANKLIN STANLEY BAXTER DONNA M. Class History Four years ago, the members of this Junior Class were the last eighth graders to attend classes in the old Thompson House. Since then the progress in school events, curriculum and policies has been aided and greatly supplemented by the willing and eager spirit of these Juniors. The financial goal of the Junior Class this year has been the Junior-Senior Prom. After a great deal of well-spent time and effort, the Juniors gave the Seniors a beautiful Prom, this year held in the Presidential Room of the Statler Hotel. Both the Record Hops and the Night Club Dance were products of the hardworking Juniors. Juniors held several main parts in the musical, Carousel. The class was also well represented in sports, debate, forensics and drama. John Bowers, president, and his capable corps of officers have made an eventful year which will not soon be forgotten. Class History I he Sophomore Class of F.C.II.S. has this year been an integral part of the schoolâs activities. At the beginning of the year the class participated in the Variety Show sponsored by the Art Club, and in February came the Key Club Show in which Sophs played the leading roles. Throughout the year, many a Sophomore boy has distinguished himself in the field of sports, at the same time bettering his school. The year progressed and in March the always popular Soc Hop was held, supplementing the class treasury. This was followed by the successful Tropicana dance, jointly held with the Freshman Class. With all these activities, the Sophs still had time to run a class dues drive which was a smashing success. The climax to an exciting year culminated in the always-thrilling race for class o fficers. It is the largest working organization in the school. Its members consist of homeroom representatives, all class officers, senators, and official committee members from the Yearbook, Jaguar Journal, etc. This year the Student Government has worked hard on revising the old constitution. Changes include higher standards for officers, and cheerleaders, the omission of the marshall system, two extra members on the cheerleading squads, and the change of the organizationâs name. The Sweetheart Dance was sponsored by our Student Government and curtains for the auditorium were obtained with much help from this hardworking group. They have raised money for the gift which will be presented to the school in June. The school and students owe much to the drive of our student government. ' the Jaguar football team, 1955 edition, although plagued by inexperience in both the line and back- field, came through with an acceptable 5 â 4â1 record, the best Group 1 record in Fairfax County, and good enough for a tie for the county championship. Of the four losses, three came by only one touchdown. Opening the season, the Jaguars were beaten 6-0 in a contest that featured the Jaguarsâ inability to provide an offense. Following this, their spirit swelled and with it the record. Annandale, McLean, and Mt. Vernon fell before them in games which proved the ability of the team. The Jaguars then played WakeÂŹ field, the highly favored Warriors finally outscored the Jaguars in a wild game, featuring many fine runs by Jaguar backs. The test of the season consisted of playing up and down ball. However, the overconfident Culpeper Blue Devils, a team composed of the largest line in the state was beaten 13-0, in what most people felt was the Jaguarsâ best team effort. The Jaguars also mauled the favored Loudon County by the lopsided score of 30-6. The season ended on a cold Thanksgiving morning with George Mason man- 6 aging to tie us. The game included field goals and blocked prints and the winning F. C. extra point 0 being called back. 6 The outstanding backs for Falls Church were: Halfback Jim Mclntire; three-letter man and captain of the team; Quarterback Sam Yancy; and Fullback 20 Charlie Mullen. 25 Outstanding linemen were Ends Jake Frye and Albert Johnson; Tackles John Davenport and Barkley n 1 J Greenwood; Guards John Girven and on the all-state 6 team Jack Zelaska, three-letter man and Co-Captain of the team. Outstanding in various positions was Dean Vogel. Many of the above were honored with 6 positions on the all Northern Virginia team. Boysâ Basketball Showing great promise early in the season, the Jaguars failed to live up to the predictions made. Although there was outstanding team play by Wally Cockrell, I iny Cline, and Bob Rustad, they could not get the Jaguars back in the winning column. Charlie Meetreâs excellent ball handling ability, along with husky Sam Yancy and Charlie Mullenâs good steady playing filled the guard positions nicely. The Jaguarsâ Frank Giambattista led the team in points scored and in shooting. A bright spot in the season was the late win over Fairfax. The record stood at 6 wins-11 losses. Sparked by veterans Cockrell, Zelaska, Brown, Deits, and Frye, the Jaguarsâ nine showed the opposition an impressive outfield, and a fair infield. In the pitching, the back bone of any high school team, the Jaguars lacked strength; surprising assistance came from freshman Buzzy Stone, who should develop into quite a player. Everyone was delighted to see the Homecoming Oueeen of 1955, Miss Ann Yeatman, returning to crown our own Pat Howard. Held in the attractively decorated gymnasium on February 18, 1956, it was a high point of the yeai. The queen ' s attractive attendants were introduced and as each one walked across the court, she was followed by a baby spotlight to her seat. As the queen approached her throne, she was accompanied by the melodious tones of Miss Letty Mason singing âSweetheart.â Following tradition, Joan Loew, queen of 1955, returned to her Alma Mater to crown the charming queen of 1956, Miss Jill Dalness. Descending from her velvet throne, Jill, followed by her attendants, began the traditional court dance, a waltz sung, again by Letty, to the tune of âA Pretty Girl is Like a Melody. Page 95 The realization of every seniorâs dream came true on the night of June 8, 1956, when the annual Junior-Senior Prom was held in the luxurious Presidential ballroom of the Statler Hotel. An atmosphere of formal excitement pervaded the room, with every factor contributing to make this event one to rememberâthe people, the band, the refreshments! Highlighting the affair was the crowning of the striking brunette Prom Queen, Miss Rave Wheeler, by the attractive brownette queen of 1954, Miss Sondra Villella. As the court ascended to the throne, viewers could see in graceful array some of Falls Church High Schoolâs most beauÂŹ tiful girls! A rich memory for every senior. The Two Tramps The Downbeats This unique twosome consists of Barbara Keesee and Judy Schierlmann. They first got toÂŹ gether two years ago for the â20th Century Sings.â Since then, they have been entertaining at dances, hospital shows, civic functions, and various school assemblies and activities. We are sure that those who have seen them will not soon forget the crazy antics of these gals. Several years ago, a group of musically talented boys from Falls Church formed the âDownbeats.â This orchestra, which today has members coming from other schools in the area as well, plays for most of our school dances. The musicians from our school include Paul Rinaldi with his hot trumpet, Karl AnderÂŹ son with his cool saxophone, Tom Moutoux with his loud piano, John Lane with his bouncing bass, and Dave Ames with his soft trombone. I hese boys played for our Homecoming, Christmas, Sweetheart, and Night Club dances, the 1 win Spin, and the Key Club variety show. After the District Festival, the band turned to marching. They marched in the Apple Blossom Parade, the Falls Church Firemenâs Parade, and the Little League Baseball Parade. The season was wound up by the playing of a small concert at the graduation of the senior class. The band deserves high praise, for a great deal of effort and time goes into their music, and the results arc worthwhile. When Billy finds out that he is going to be a father, he tries to get some money by robbing a mill owner, but the attempt is unsuccessful and Billy commits suicide. Through the years, students with outstanding character, leadership, service, and scholarship, have been admitted into its realm. This year the society consists of forty- seven members who come from the junior and senior classes. Under the guidance of its beloved sponsor, Mrs. Mabel V. Chapman, and the hard-working officers, the members of the society have worked hard on its annual dance, its formal fall and spring inductions, college day, and the Easter Seal drive. This year, as it has in the past, the National Honor Society has done fine work for our school and community. Aviles Page 117 I Our 6 It all begins at eight-thirty. They come, some sleepily, some exuberantly, and they all make noise. The cleats on shoes tap the stone stairs. Someone opens a locker carefully, another slams his mightily. An âOh, noâ comes from a group of girls who are discussing another g roup of girls. A boy whistles at some girl; she giggles. Someone drops a whole stack of books. ' âHiâ yells Miss Personality Plus. âOh drat, the bell.â Someone from public speaking class comes over the P. A. system and tells something vague about the eighth grade football team. The students do learn this, that only eighth-graders will be excused to attend. A laugh, a groan, and a wise-crack follows. Class is underway. Now and then the teachersâ voices can be heard, teaching, commanding, asking. The lunch period begins. Hungry teenagers âbeat itâ to the cafeteria. Brown bags, lunch boxes, wallets with lunch money, students fumble with these as they hurry to eat. Spoons hit the floor, someone knocks over a chair. Noise and confusion plus laughter is everywhere. In the kitchen white clad women are fixing salads; the custodian rolls away a big trash can. When everyone is full, or the money gives out, the students leave for lockers, library, main hall. The main hall is the social center. A record-player blasts âMary Leeâ, and the two girls who are the main attraction at the time do the Washington-Lee swing. Little groups of students talk, gossip, just âhanging aroundâ until the next bell rings. . . . There they go again, twice more. The noise and confusion of eating, gossiping â the cafeteria is a busy place and teenagers love to eat, and eat, and eat . . . B the time c eryone has finally settled down to work again, it is 3:20, and there is a mad rush now. Lor some it seems like a matter of life or death, this race for busses, rides, books, committee meetings, cheerleading practice. The yellow busses come and go carrying pupils back and forth to various destinations. In the building, custodians are cleaning dusty floors, sweeping up bobby pins and gum wrappers. It begins to get quiet. The committees have left. Now and then one hears the clicking of a lone typewriter, or of a teacher descendÂŹ ing the steps wearily. At 5.00 the school seems to go to sleep, but it is only resting. I he evening brings more â activities everywhere, crews bang on sets in the auditorium, actors rehearse lines, basketball practice is in the gym, meetings are in the liÂŹ brary, debaters fervently tear their hair over details of âResolvedâ; the phone rings in the office and someoneâs mother v ants him. As we pass we bid farewell to a routine, but gather from our experiences knowledge to apply to our own future. We say our good-byes to those who gave us the incentive to depart from ignorance and naivete in order to strive m the direction of the new â of the unaccomplished, and give our hellos to a world made better, c hope, by our having been in it. This book then, our life, derived from a collection of cross-sections of learning, is our life in an institution dedicated to learning â to growth â to nourishing the dream â this is Falls Church High School as seen by you through the eyes of us on the Jaguar Staff, and from this same staff, this is our farewell â a farewell tinged with regret at leaving this, a second home, and a farewell full of hope for success, and for peace in the future.
