Be¬ hind us are ten years of Senior Classes, ten years of Jaguars. Before us . . . who knows? We of 1955 would like to take our hats off to that past ... to all the students who experi¬ mented, made mistakes, built traditions that we today benefit by, rely on. Falls Church Fligh School has always been, and shall continue to be, as good as the students in it. The fun, the work, the study of the y ear is captured in this, Our Book, made possible not only by the work of our hands, but by the struggles of those before us. May this book stand as our salute to all that Falls Church High School, past and present, stands for. Photo A Decade of Progress at F. C. H. $ Ours is one of the oldest high schools in this area. It was established when Falls Church was a small village and when the only public transportation to Washington was by the Washing¬ ton and Old Dominion Railroad. By horse and buggy, it was even slower. The Thomas Jefferson Institute had been built in time for opening in 1881 as the finest school in Northern Vir¬ ginia. It had been in use as an elementary school from that time until 1902 when the first grade of high school was inaugurated. This first class, the Class of 1906 was the pilot class as freshmen, each year seeing a new class added below until in September 1905 the school was complete as a four-year high school. The school was a small one and retained the old-fashioned name “Thomas Jefferson Institute.” The original portion of the present building was occupied by the three hundred students and teachers from Thomas Jefferson Institute in September, 1945. This little group was joined by about three hundred more from Franklin Park, Chesterbrook, McLean, Dunn Loring, Merrifield and other growing communi¬ ties whose students had been attending Fairfax High School. Our first ten years have been busy ones, although somebody has always been taking away a part of our area. First, it was the School Board which in 1949 gave our McLean section to Fair¬ fax High School. Then in 1952 the City of Falls Church took back its students and in 1953 Alexandria annexed a square mile or two and took our students from the annexed area. But in spite of these losses, our enrollment has continued to grow enormously. In addition to two extensions to our building in 1948 and in 1953-54, we have used temporary expedients from time to time: the Hillwood Square Recreation Hall and the Alexander’s Play Room in 1951 and Thompson House in 1953. And now, the new McLean High School, taking about six hun¬ dred of our people, is opening just in time. Without it, we would next year have pupils crowding each other out of the windows. During these ten years we have won many athletic games and lost some while establishing ourselves as good sportsmen and earning the Babe Ruth award. We have filled our Virginia High School League plaque with forensic and dramatic winners. We have earned our “stadium” facilities and lights by ten good magazine sales drives. The Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools has accepted us into its membership. We have won scholarships galore to the best colleges in the country. We have produced a newspaper which has been judged best in the state. We have produced outstanding yearbooks and maga¬ zines. We have uniformed and equipped our band and have seen it develop into a great outfit. We have robed our choirs and enjoyed their wonderful music as they continued to pile up honors including the big Talbott Cup from the national West¬ minster festival. We have won contests and awards in essays, public speaking, science, foreign language, music and band, art, home economics, mechanical drawing and other fields. Our Student Council quickly developed into a vital factor in the school and has continued on a high level of prestige and service. The club program has developed and considerable prog¬ ress has been made. During these ten years we have secured charters and built up strong chapters in five high -prestige, na¬ tional honorary societies: the National Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society, Key Club, Quill and Scroll and the Thes¬ pian Society. But if the reader wants to know what we are proudest of, let him go to the alcove off the main lobby and gaze up at the ten group pictures of our graduates from 1946 to 1955, fine boys and girls, now men and women, out in the world, in col¬ lege, in the military services, in the professions, in business and industry, in homes maintained by their own earnings, raising fine children — doing their part to keep America great. You, future graduates, will join them, and we will be proud of you. Page 4 p mnapa William S. Rumbough, Ed. D. Although many teachers have been added to the staff since that time, this sextet has been an integral part of Falls Church High School during the school’s entire his¬ tory. They have worked with the students to build the traditions and maintain the standards for which our school will always be remembered. MABLE U. CHAPMAN, B.S. These Juniors have worked four years to make a dream a reality; to sponsor the best Prom ever given. Many class activities have taken place this year, and among the most successful were the bake sales, paper drives, and dances. Both the Fall Hop and the Night Club Dance were products of the hard-working Juniors. The financial success of these activities naturally added to the success of the Prom. Jake Frye, president, and his capable corps of officers have had an eventful year — they have united the class by furnishing the necessary incentive for class participation. Many of the sophomores participated in school-wide sports and activities. In the dramatic department the Sophomore was well represented by Lynn Hagen who was chosen the best actor at the District Play Festival. Another sophomore receiving a high honor was Marlene Segelbaum who was elected by the entire school as S.C.A. Secretary for 1955-56. Jim Armogida was President of the National Junior Honor Society. The Down-Beats, a band com¬ posed of the school’s finest musicians, included talent¬ ed sophomores Bob Johnson and Paul Rinaldi. This year for the first time sophomores published a news¬ paper, THE SOPHOMORE BULLETIN, which stim¬ ulated a greater interest in class activities. Milton Den- linger, who worked hard as Editor, and Walter Crater, who worked as Circulation Manager, hope that they have succeeded in establishing a tradition for future classes to follow. The “Class of ’57” was also well-rep¬ resented in school athletics. The Junior Varsity bas¬ ketball and football teams, composed almost entirely of sophomores, won the county championships. A sur¬ prising number of sophomores, also participated in Var¬ sity sports. One-third of the varsity golf team was composed of Jim Armogida, Paul Kvale, Bill Stegall, and Chip Durley. The Soc Hop, sponsored annually by the Sophomore class, was one of the most success¬ ful dances of the year. Nat Albright turned in a fine performance as master of ceremonies of this affair. All sophomores agree that the year ’54-’5 5 was a highly successful one for them and that the class spirit which was generated this year will continue to grow in the promotion of the many junior and senior activities ahead. Before moving to Princeton, New Jersey, just before Christmas, President Bill Ilillier took steps to establish a Freshman newspaper. Paula Dodson was selected as editor-in-chief of the “Freshman News,” which was later re-named the “Kitten,” to represent the clipped claws of a junior¬ sized jaguar. Barry Keenan and Sue Oakley were elected as senators to represent the class in the S.C.A. The vacancy left by Bill Ilillier was filled very ably by John Staples, and the Vice-Presidency was, in turn, filled by John Murray, a new and well-liked student. When Forensics began, the Freshman class was not left out: Reginald Rutherford made the Forensic Team by winning the school-wide spelling contest and went on to the District meet. This year, as in previous years, the class of ’58 spon¬ sored a spring dance, the Moonbeam Bounce, which was held April 30. The music was provided by “The Downbeats,” a dance band composed of school mu¬ sicians. Throughout the year Freshmen showed enthusiastic support for school-wide activities as well as those of the class of ' 58. Page 60 Faculty Elects . . . Student Council Association The Student Council Association of Falls Church High School is an integral p art of the state association of the same name, and a member of the National Association of Student Councils. Be¬ sides the four regular officers chosen by the entire school, each class elects two senators, and each home room a representative, all of which comprise the personnel of the S.C.A. which governs the school, plans programs and assemblies, and sponsors educational, philanthropic, and recreational activities. This year the Student Council Association has been represented on the Student Parent-Teacher Executive Committee, has handled the Magazine Drive, Christmas Baskets, March of Dimes, Arlington Hospital Drive, Easter Seals and Student Handbooks, as well as the maintenance of the school book store as a source of funds. Every student is a member of the S.C.A., the purpose of which is to instill in each individual the highest standards of honor and the finest principles of democracy. The court proceeded to the throne to a vocal back¬ ground provided by Miss Marjorie Green. The procession ended when the 1955 queen, Sondra Villella, attired in lavender, ascended the throne to be crowned by Diana Reiff, queen of ’54. The annual Junior-Senior beach party, held the follow¬ ing day, climaxed the events of the year. Sondra Villella, Prom Queen Page 77 G . . . HEY... RAH!!!!! Are you proud of your school? Yeah Man! D R A M A Falls Church now boasts a brand new and beautiful auditorium with a s eating capacity of over 700. For the first time in the history of our school our plays were presented on campus and in our own theatre. Four full length plays—a comedy, a mystery, a drama and a farce were presented; for the first time all five classes were represented in either the cast or crew of the pro¬ ductions. The curtain, however, did not slowly and impressively rise on our first production, for the very simple fact that the curtain had not yet arrived. However, everything else about that production was impressive, and “Ber¬ nardino” by Mary Chase played to enthusiastic au¬ diences on October 22nd and 23rd. As was fitting, the mystery thriller “Dracula” was pre¬ sented after the majestic parting of sumptuous and fab¬ ulously wine rich velvet curtains and applauded vig¬ orously by a receptive and shuddering audience. This December production was sponsored by the National Thespian Troupe. The “Sleep of Prisoners” by Christopher Frye, the Virginia High School League Contest play, was pro¬ duced at school, won the district festival and went on to win the highest rating of all high school plays in the state. This is the first time that one of our dramatic productions has won this top honor. The “Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar Wilde rounded off a highly successful theatrical season under the direction of Mr. Shandy Holland. Page 107 First column: ANN McKIBBIN, ELLEN KIM. Science Club The Science Club is affiliated with the Science Clubs of America. It has five main aims: to study facts, prin¬ ciples, and causes; to spread the knowledge of science; to respect the right of others to express their opinions on scientific matters; to apply scientific principles in verifying or refuting findings, which seem questionable to apply scientific methods, reasoning, and logic to the conduct of personal affairs; and to uphold these ideals in the tradition of true science. To accomplish these aims, the club invites speakers to come and talk to its members, presents movies of a scientific nature, and takes field trips of interest. For their Christmas project, the girls made scrapbooks for children at Children’s Hospital and following this, raised money for the cancer drive. Other activities were a food sale and a stationery sale to help finance the club’s many interesting and worthwhile projects. The Model Club was organized three years ago by some members of the Camera Club who were interested in fashion photograjrhy. It has been sponsored during the past three years by Mrs. Margarita Newman. Among the activities are the many fashion shows which have been held. The girls work on self-improve¬ ment as well as fashion modeling. They like to learn beauty tricks to make themselves better groomed and more attractive. Bake sales have been held to raise money to make it possible for the club to sponsor picnics, parties and dances for its members. Beauty consultants, modeling school representatives, and others have attended dub meetings to give lectures on good grooming and other modeling problems. The club has also taken field trips to Washington to visit modeling agencies. As a result of the experience and knowledge gained from the Model Club, some of the members have become successful models, working in the teen sections of the department stores in this area. Some of the mem¬ bers enter the modeling profession. The ultimate goal of the Model Club is to improve the personality and personal appearance of its members by developing an interest in fashion and good grooming. Foremost among the achievements of the Falls Church High School Student-Parent-Teacher Associa¬ tion during the past year was the integration of the students, in name and in fact, into the organization. Students participated on an equal footing with the par¬ ents and the teachers in the planning and execution of the SPTA activities and programs throughout the years. Vigorous efforts were made by the SPTA to obtain additional badly needed land for the High School’s Physical development, recreational, and athletic pro¬ grams. This will be pursued by the SPTA until achiev¬ ed. The first annual SPTA Festival was a big success. It provided funds for SPTA scholarships, for the Forensic team’s expenses at the state meet at Charlottesville, and for sending the A Cappella choir to Princeton to par¬ ticipate in the Westminster College Choir Festival. The important problem of the relationship between students and their parents was dealt with, both through a panel discussion at an SPTA membership meeting and as a year-round discussion topic by a newly-formed Study Group. This year 1600 students read, spoke and spelled the King’s English as the Foren¬ sic program got under way. From each English class came the best qualified poetry and prose readers and from this promising and talented group it was a mean task to whittle down to eight peo¬ ple. When it was done, however, they were good to look at and wonderful to hear. The 1955 Forensic Team again walked off with an enviable number of places in the Northern Virginia District Contest. With five schools competing, we won three first places and three second places out of a possible eight categories. Our school is more than ever proud of the showing that our Debating and Forensic teams displayed under the direction of Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Lenvin. Claudia Fruit, Fieather Flanley and Sally Ludlow represented the school at the state finals in Charlottesville in poetry reading, public speaking and prose read¬ ing respectively, where each captured a second place title. Claudia Fruit represents the school in the “I Speak tor Democracy” contest. Page 131 Falls Church Bank Falls Church, Va.
