Many years of dedication were in their teaching careers. Now as they retire from teaching, we, the staff, would like to pay them one last small tribute. Published by The Warrior Staff of the Fairview High School Sherwood ' Ohio Volume 13 ADMINISTRA TION AND FACULTY FAIRVIEW SALUTES TWO MR. DALE SANDER Geography, W. History, Econ. and Sociology. Mr. Sander graduated from high school at Madrid, Iowa. He attended Palmer Jr. College at Albany, Missouri. He taught for two years at Hopkins, Missouri. For the next two years, he attended Drake University at Des Moines, Iowa. Mr. Sander enrolled at Elon College in North Carolina where he served as student football coach. He then taught at Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It was at this time Mr. Sander decided to go into the ministry. He then served three years in a church in Reedville, North Carolina. In 1936, Mr. Sander was appointed as principal at the Washington Twp. School in Ney. He served in this position until 1958. In 1958 Mr. Sander was appointed as assistant superintendent and guidance counselor at Fairview Hi gh School. In 1968 Mr. Sander requested to return to full time teaching and turned the guidance responsibilities over to Mr. Mountz. Mr. Sanders comments were: “The greatest rewards in teaching are realized when a teacher becomes aware of the achievements of his former students, Youth has been a part of our lives and it has been a joy to watch them grow. I will miss the associations with the student body and the many activities of the school program. I will ever be grateful to the fine relationship with both the administration and faculty which has made working in the system a very pleasant experience. As for the future, I have many hobbies and I am not concerned about having too much time on my hands.” 4 DEDICATED TEACHERS warn Mrs. Sander was born in Meron, Indiana, where her parents were both college professors. After graduation from the eighth grade, she moved to Albany, Missouri, where she graduated from high school and attended col¬ lege. Her final year of college was completed at De¬ fiance College. Mrs. Sander says education” has been our way of life. She went on to state: It has been a most reward¬ ing career and if the time comes when I’ll live in the past, then I’ll have a future to enjoy. Many have asked if I intend to travel now and do all the things I wanted to do but didn’t have the time to do. My answer - we’ve always traveled and I’ve always done all the things I wanted to do - paint, handcrafts, worked in the church and community, so I intend to go right on living a full life, but probably not by the clock. I never dreaded a day of school, and this has been possible because of my work with a fine administration and a fine group of teachers. This would not be complete unless I also gave credit to youth, and the majority of them have earned my respect and admiration. I’m most pleased that I chose teaching as my career.” Mr. Jones’ statements relative to Mr. and Mrs. Sander were: Our school system has been better because of the many contributions Mr. and Mrs. Sander have made to it. They have been loyal dedicated teachers with a sincere interest in the welfare of our students. At no time have they placed their personal welfare ahead of the school system. They are fine people and both can feel their jobs have been well done.” 5 SUPERINTENDENT HEAP BIG POW-WOW IN THE CHIEF’S WIGWAM! Mr. Breisinger, Mrs. Schulte, Supt. Darrell Jones (Chief), and Alice Sims. Concern and sincerity have helped Mr. Darrell Jones succeed in accomplishing his goals for the Central Local School District. Consulting with the Board of Education on ever-present problems, offer¬ ing aid and advice to students, and taking pride in school activities are fitted into his active schedule. Perplexed students feel welcome in Mr. Jones’s office as he explains the curriculum and discusses school policies freely. Mr. Jones also demonstrates the, fine Apache spirit in our community which makes us very proud to have him as Superintendent. The students of FHS gratefully acknowledge the unselfish time and effort Mr. Jones has given to make our school a success. Mr. Smith, otherwise known as Central Local’s “Dear Abby,” serves coffee to his No. 1 speech topic, Mr. Jones. 6 PRINCIPAL Now let me think here a minute. Mr. Breisinger, with his outstanding qualities of congeniality, willing cooperation and interest, is able to accomplish the complex task of coordinating the diversified units which make up Fairview High School. As the edu¬ cational head of learning institution, the prin¬ cipal must supervise the instructional program and work with groups such as the Music and Athletic Boosters. He demonstrates the Apache spirit as a representative of the administration at school events. With his continually reaf¬ firmed interest in students and his “tell it like is” attitude, Mr. Robert W. Breisinger measures up to the demand of the principal job. The musical played to a re¬ sponsive crowd for a two-night stand, April 16 and 17. Calamity Jane was a comedy about the true-life adventures of Wild Bill Hickcock and Calamity Jane. The play was directed by Mrs. June Schulte with Mr. Dean Edwards assisting. Mr. Herroon conducted the band throughout the entire production. Much hard work and patience went into the making of this musical production, and we thank all who helped make Calamity Jane the huge success it was. DRAMA TICS You Can’t Take It With You and Erasmus - With Freckles were the production staged by the Fairview Drama Class during the 1970-71 school year. Both of the plays were comedies. Three or four students carried the major parts: Bruce Heater, Darlene Caryer, John Jacob, Connie Haver, and Pat Wheeler. But the success of both productions grew out of a spirit of cooperation and hard work by the individual members of the class. Plays are as good as the combined efforts of the whole, and the manner in which the audience received the plays indicates the class effort was not in vain. The first half .of the year was engaged in the usual re¬ organization and training period but after December the chorus found themselves in high gear. There were 97 mem¬ bers involved in District 1 Solo and Ensemble Contest at Bowling Green, finishing with a total of 59 State medals. In March, 95 members went to the larger group District 1 competition and came home with the first Superior rating in the history of Central Local and Fairview High School which entitled them to go on to State Competition. The next few weeks were hectic with the musical practice of Calamity Jane and preparing for State. April 24th was the big day - State competition at Clyde, Ohio. The results of that day are now history - with 3 straight ones. The State Plaque is proudly displayed in the Fairview High School trophy case. It was a rewarding year for the chorus and a long sought- after goal for the director June Schulte. 70 SOPHOMORE BOYS’ ENSEMBLE: KNEELING: D. Foust. L. to R., STANDING: S. Jerger, T. Hubbard, K. Four seniors will be absent from next year’s squad. They are: Bob Suffel, Greg Brenner, Steve Sims and Jim Guilford. There will be four lettermen returning to carry the colors for Fairview. Bruce Berenyi, Gary Crites, Tom Bashor, and Denny Sims. These men will provide a sound nucleus for the coming season. Bob Suffel received a trophy for posting the 10th fastest time in the con¬ ference meets. He was also Fairview’s most valuable runner. Tom Bashor was selected as this year’s most improved runner. BOB 84 JIM GREG AND TOM POUR IT ON READY . . . GO! _ FOOTBALL The Apaches won their first league championship with a resounding 38-6 win over Payne. Fairview completely dominated their league with the exception of a thrilling come-from-behind 12-12 tie with Hicksville. The Apaches outscored their opponents 140-42. In local newspaper standings Fairview finished fourth offensively and third defensively, behind such teams as Napoleon, who was undefeated, and Archbold who was 8 and 1. One of Fairview’s losses came in the last 30 seconds of the Delta game, with the Panthers edging the Apaches 26-22. The other loss was a disappointing first home field and Homecoming game to Otsego, 20-14. The following players received special awards at the annual Boosters Athletic Banquet. The team showed vast improvement as the season pro¬ gressed. By midseason the team was playing as a unit and gaining confidence with every game. The team showed more desire and determination as time went on, which was the key to their success. Gary Crites was the leading scorer for the season with 183 points for a 13 point per game average. Bob Suffel, Paul Baerlin, Pat Stuckey, and Tony Petrone were all undefeated going into the last match of the season with Defiance. Pat Stuckey was the only grappler to overcome the Bulldogs’ ferocious bite and finish the season un¬ defeated with a 14-0 record. All four seniors won gold medals at Napoleon’s annual gold medal tournament. These four seniors also contributed 176 of the team’s 493 total points. Bob Suffel came closer to the state tournament than any other previous Fairview wrestler. Bob was beaten in an overtime by a referee’s decision. Had Bob won, he would have advanced to state. 98 Pat Stuckey is helped off the mat after a tuff battle Announcing the victor, Terry Keeterle. Tony Petrone - sinks in a half nelson. The baseball team did not have the winning season that was expected of them as they finished with a 12-15 record. They were also unsuccessful in defending the Green Meadows conference championship. Their con¬ ference record was 4-3 which placed them fourth in the final standings. Even though the team did not enjoy much success, several players improved their individual play from last year. Scott Hemenway and Bruce Berenyi were the lead¬ ing hitters with averages of .393 and .382 respectively. Hemenway led in runs batted in with 26, and Steve Roberts led in stolen bases with 10. Hemenway’s fol¬ lowing by Les Chafin with 2.33. This year’s reserve baseball team showed plenty of hitting power as they averaged eight runs per contest. Their record of three wins and six losses could have been much better with fewer errors in the field and more consistent pitching. Sophomore Doug Morrison led the hitters with a .400 average while Freshman Joe Jerger led in runs-batted-in with eleven. F.V.
