In the State Scholarship test, he won first in Algebra II in our Divisions and was third in the state in all divisions. Music is whatever you would like it to be. It might be a historical research or a surface study, an emphatic realism or a worthwhile escape, a performance of appreciation and recognition, or a bowing in and bowing out. It may even be a high school composition. We may discover a new outlet, a new phi¬ losophy, or a new version of music. We mem¬ orize it; We harmonize it; We translate it; We improvise it; We hum it; We contort it; We blow it; Some devour it. Most significant of all, We employ it ... at church, at school, at ballgames ... Music to most of us is a movement to either the heart, mind, body, or soul. To the musi¬ cian, it is all of these. The first activities were a formal and an informal initiation. During the year Mary Gonzalez gave an interesting talk and showed slides of her experiences in Mexico last summer. Mrs. Schreder, a former teacher at Fairview, showed slides on the Head Start program, a program designed to help migrant parents teach their children and to prepare them for grade school. Mrs. White discussed with us the advantages and disadvantages of teaching elementary education, and Mr. Edwards told us his ideas of a good secondary teacher. Besides listening to these interesting people, the F. T. A. members helped by grading papers. Prob¬ ably the most important event to many of the members was the field trip to Adrian College in April, which ended a fine year for all the F. T. A. members. 49 FUTUg THE NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR BOYS FFA - ■m B Irica . The Future Homemakers of America start¬ ed their new year by the formal initiation of 27 new members, a county meeting at Tin- ora and a subregional meeting held at An¬ thony Wayne High School. Other projects consisted of sponsoring an Indian child in Oklahoma and placing first at the county fair with the F. H. A. fair booth. Special programs held during the year were a Progressive party, which introduced foreign foods to the girls, Daddy Date night and a F. F. A.-F. H. A. square dance. In February the girls made supplies for a rest home and in April they were busy making doughnuts for three days. The profits from the sales of the doughnuts went for the F. H. A. trip in June. Other money making activities included a Sweetheart Hop, selling Christmas greens and selling toys. Eighteen members, the advisors and five parents attended the State Convention held in Columbus. The Student Council was organized in the fall with Mike Singer as President, Mary Gon¬ zalez as Vice-President, and Cindy Orcholski as Secretary-Treasurer. The first activity of the Student Council was to assist in organizing the first Homecoming of Fairview High School. Later they adjusted a proposed constitution which had been written at the end of the last year. Silver Bells was the theme for the Christmas Dance with the Hilltop band providing the music. The Student Council visited the Napoleon and Hilltop High Schools. The Student Council was able to experience the atmosphere and problems of other schools and discuss with their Student Council the ways to solve them. The objectives of the Student Council are to improve school spirit and to improve working relationships among students, faculty and administration. In summary we think the Student Council has had a successful year and are looking forward to a new year with new challenges and hope we will be able to assist in a constructive way to deal with these problems. Each slave had to speak in his foreign tongue and display his talents. The slaves went to the highest bidders and were in bondage for twenty-four hours. Mr. Wagler shared with the club his experiences in Greece, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Yugoslavia. The Club observed the culture of peo¬ ple living abroad and became aware of the existing contrasts and barriers. In April the club hiked to the park and enjoyed a picnic in celebration of a year completed and the development of a better understanding of the people that make the world. Our hope is that in the future all social barriers may be dis¬ solved and that peace and understanding may become realities. 59 Warrior-War Whoo Staff ROW 1: C. Seibert, K. Miller, C. Kroa, C. The purpose is to promote athletics and sportsmanship with assistance from the administration and the community. The club project was t o buy individual and team trophies for deserving Fairview athletes which will be presented at the Boosters All-Sports Banquet. A project for the future will be to help lower the cost of sending the cheerleaders to summer camp. In the past the Varsity Club has met very little and sponsored very little, but it is hoped that in the future the organization will be more meaningful. By buying sweaters or special jackets, holding initiations, meeting in the evenings, holding swimming and skating parties with dates and charging dues to the club, it is hoped to instill more interest and meaning to the Varsity Club. 61 Fairview During the past school year the Apache Band launched itself into the first full football season and expanded its range of activities to include halftime performances on the Fairview gridiron and the Defi¬ ance College. In January the band was invited to perform at Hicksville and Antwerp and carried the reputation of our fine music department to these neighboring schools. Due to the lengthy football season, a Winter Concert was presented for the first time and proved to be very popular. Another first for the Apache Band was the Excellent rating earned at contests at the University of Toledo; it was the 62 highest Fairview has ever received since the school consolidation. The Spring Concert brought the con¬ cert season to a close with a rock beat and a rousing applause for one of the finest concerts to ever be pre¬ sented on our stage. The many other activities of the band, its dis¬ tinguished performances, and the exceptional support of the program by the school, the community, and the Music Boosters are evidence that an abundance of pride is present for this organization that does so much for the benefit of the students and community. The fall production was the two act Around the World in Eighty Days. The spring performance was another comedy entitled The Mouse that Roared . Both productions played to a full house, and were well received by the audience - which those in the cast appreciated. Both plays called for large casts, therefore nearly all members of the Drama Class made a stage appearance during both produc¬ tions. With such large casts it would be unfair to sin¬ gle out three or four persons for special recognition. Suffice it to say that each individual contributed to the success, if any, of the productions. fW, Li’l Abner Show Biz Bug Bites Fairview Chorus ■ III ROW 1: D. Caryer, M. Gonzalez, K. Morrell, E. Barefootin could have been the theme of the Fairview High School Chorus, as that is the way most of them were seen. Freckles, patches and braids added to the Dogpatch scene. Another first - putting on a Broadway Musical, Li’l Abner was a challenging experience that the F.V. Chorus members will have fond memories of for the rest of their lives. The production both nights was warmly received by an appreciative audience for an outstanding performance, successfully directed by Mrs. June Schulte and Mr. Dean Edwards. Fairview finished second in the Northwest Buckeye League, tying league champs Hicksville 28-28, and beating pre-season co-favored Payne 26-0, on Parent’s Day. The Apaches had a N. W. B. C. mark of 2-1-1, and com¬ piled an overall record of 5-3-1. Statistic wise the Apaches improved tremendously from last year ' s team. Fairview averaged 22. 2 points a game with an offense that aver¬ aged 293 yards per game and limited their opponents to 15.2 points per game. Six Apaches received honors in the All-N. W. B. C. selections. Mick Ester, Gerald Hanna, only a sophomore, Bruce Mosier, Steve Roberts, Tim Schlosser, and Pat Stuckey were selected for first team. Tim Schlosser also received honors for Honorable Mention All-State Defensive Tackle. The following players received awards at the Boosters Annual All- Sports Banquet held April 18th. Most Valuable Player - Bruce Mosier Top Offensive Back - Tom Hubbard Top Offensive Lineman - Gerald Hanna Top Defensive Back - Mick Ester Top Defensive Lineman - Pat Stuckey Most Improved Player - Ed Schlosser Our First Homecoming Victory! The Apaches delighted 1800 Homecoming fans as Gerald Hanna, Jim Knisely, Andy Shininger and Ed Schlosser tore gaping holes in the Vikings line to enable Mike Bashor, Aaron Hanna and Tom Hubbard to ramble for 230 yards. Bruce Mosier caught 6 passes for 66 yards. The Apaches de¬ fense held the Vikings to 56 yards rushing, 26 in the second half. Ester, Stuckey, Hanna and Mosier mounted the defensive assault on the Vikings. Apaches Future Rosy Fairview wins the runners-up trophy from 2nd place in the N. W. B. C. The Apaches gained only one shut out of t he year with a great defensive display on a rain soaked Saturday afternoon. This closed the Apaches Football season with a 5-3-1 record with Fairview ' s future looking bright. Peter, Hubbard, Schlosser, English, Hanna, Shininger, Mosier and the rest of the Apaches Defense had its silent hour. Boger, English, Ester, Hanna, Knisely, Rath, Schlosser, and Winnie played their last football game for Fairview. r The Field I ' m gonna get you! Fall down - go boom! Got it. Is Daddy watching? The Cross-Country team consisted of four seniors and 13 underclassmen. The team finished third in the Green Meadows conference, one half point out of second place. Five of the top seven runners were underclassmen, leaving a strong nucleus for next year. Cross-Country is a grueling sport. It takes an athlete with courage, determination, endurance, and the will to win to be successful in this sport. Their season record was 16 wins and 8 losses. Jerry Bergman was the leading runner with a total of 95 points followed closely by Bob Suffel with 93 points. Rounding out the remainder of the top seven runners are Bruce Berenyi, 72 pts.; Larry Mor¬ rison, 63 pts.; Ste ve Sims, 61 pts.; Ken Sailer, 53 pts.; and Greg Brenner, 40 pts. Other members of the team were Jim Guilford, Tom Bashor, Scott Kammeyer, Scott Sanders, Chuck Smith, Paul Baer- lin, Don Baker, Leo Shininger, Eddie Singer, and Steve Jerger. Led by seniors Jim Knisely, Tim Schlosser, and underclassmen Russ Motter, John Jacob, Bob Suffel, Paul Baerlin, and Pat Stuckey, the Apaches compiled the greatest single season record ever by a Fair- view wrestling team with an 11-1 record. They came in second out of four teams at the Napoleon Holiday Tourna¬ ment with Jim Knisely and Tim Schlosser winning first place medals. The Apaches came in sixth out of seventeen schools at the sectional tournament held at Defiance. Bob Suffel took a 2nd and John Jacob and Paul Baerlin took 3rd ' s. These fine young men went on to Toledo to represent Fairview in the District Tournament. There will be no material rewards, such as a league trophy, for the efforts put forth by this outstanding group of young men because Fairview’s wrestling team is in no league. We hope these young men have gained something better than a trophy. There has to be a warm glow of inner satisfaction and pride in each one of them knowing that he helped a team accomplish great feats. The rest of the boys appeared lost and bewildered for the first half of the season as they lost seven of their first eight games. The biggest problem at the time was the lack of an offensive attack. No one on the team would take the initiative to consistently attack the basket. By midseason, the boys began to gain confidence in their offensive abilities. The play of guard Brent Maugel and Gary Crites, in particular, was vastly improved. The Apaches won a thriller from Bryan on a last second shot by Maugel. They then lost a heartbreaker to Ayersville before winning their last four games to finish the season with a 7-11 record. Crites was the leading scorer for the season with 121 points. Maugel was second with 112, and Steve Roberts was third with 102. Gerald Hanna led in the rebounds with 184. The only loss was to a tough Napoleon team by 2 points. They were undefeated in the conference. The Apache Frosh began their season with an exciting 1 point victory over rival conference opponent Paulding. They continued to win 12 straight games before being defeated. After their only loss they came back to defeat Oakwood, previously undefeated in the conference, to win the conference championship. In the conference tournament, the Ap° he freshmen defeated Hicksville, Ayersville, and finally Oakwood to win the champion¬ ship. Their overall record was 16 wins and 1 loss. The beginning of the season looked great for the Apache thin clads but as the spring went along it took with it some key men. Dan Thomas and Marv Bergman were out most of the season with pulled muscles and Jer¬ ry Bergman had the curse placed upon him once more and also missed most of the season because of sickness. Fairview won one meet outright, came in second several times, came in last 3 times, gained a 3rd at the league track meet, and came in 5th to the last at the district AA meet bearing out some good schools like Napoleon, Lima Bath, Lake and Van Wert. We are faced with a rebuilding year and with the underclassmen we have re¬ turning next year we could come out with a 500 season in 1971. The outstanding individual for the track team was high scorer - Mike Singer! He also was the only Apache to score in the district track meet. 97 STEVE, Apaches Top Place Catcher. Overall Record 12-13 League Record 6-1 Players kick the habit. The baseball team gave Fairview its only league championship of the year. Even though their overall record was onl 12-13, they had a 6-1 league rec¬ ord which was good enough to lead the Green Meadows Conference. The Apaches were 3-0 going into the final week, with four league games remain¬ ing. On Tuesday, Scott Hemenway hurled a two-hitter in a losing cause as Hicksville won by a score of 5-1. Les Chafin pitched a four-hitter on Thurs¬ day against Paulding as the Apaches won, 6-3. They clinched a tie for the league championship on Friday when they defeated Oakwood, 5-4. Bruce Berenyi fired a two-hitter in that game. The Apaches wrapped it all up on Sat¬ urday as they downed Tinora, 1-0 with Hemenway throwing a one-hitter. 99 Hemenway Athletic Banquet Speaker, TONY MASON Perdue University GREG BRENNER Best Defensive Basketball Player BRUCE MOSIER Most Valuable Football Player, Most Valuable Basketball Player JIM KNISELY Randy Higley Memorial Award BRUCE BERENYI Best Attitude Award 101 ! j Reserve Cheerleaders Frosh Cheerleaders BOTTOM TO TOP: Sue Mack, Captain; Deb Bostater, Shelly Donze, Debbie Ester. For the first time this year the Varsity and Re¬ serve squads found out that cheerleading for a varsity football game can be both fun and exciting.
