1972 JACKET FAIRVIEW HIGH SCHOOL FAIRVIEW, OKLAHOMA VOLUME III PUBLISHED BY THE JACKET STAFF Contents Activities............9 Heroes...............31 Stars...............49 Establishment .... 57 Youth 63 Meeting The Chalieng es Many traditions have been changed, but FHS remains as the stabilizing factor. FHS students have been challenged by the teachers, by the home, and by each other. Our heroes are challenged by the big, important game. Activists must meet yearbook and newspaper deadlines, have the banquets decorated by 5:00 p.m., and always have money- making schemes underway. Our stars must perform in front of large audiences and cope with unsettled nerves. The teaching establishment is daily challenged by keeping ahead of some one-hundred students. The youth are challenged by studying, getting book reports in on time, getting weekly typing assign- ments, and making a better grade on a test. The Jacket staff dares you to remember each challenge as it came. As we step into our futures, let us all meet our daily challenges with hope that we will conquer them. Reda Thompson Randy Kreie Mr. Eubanks, who retires this year, chal- lenged 39 years of FHS students to be loyal to their beliefs. 4 Chris Stewart and Chris Ewbank arrange book report display. She has always been willing to lend an ear and give her honest, challenging opinion. She works morning, noon, and night helping students, teaching students, and sponsoring students. Teaching Oklahoma History and Civics, coun- seling individuals, operating the concession stands, and giving those vocational aptitude tests are only a few of the small jobs Mrs. Campbell completes each year. We humbly dedicate the Jacket to her with our sincerest thanks. Concessions stand is her sideline job. Mrs. Campbell counsels with Lyle Nickel about college. 8 ACTIVISTS Student Council Reinstates Spirited Homecoming Bonfire Under the leadership of President Mac Wahl, the Student Council continued its challenging program of student activities. Homecoming con- tests, Christmas parties, and National assemblies were just a few of the many functions performed by the Student Council. On October 28, the Student Council reinstated the custom of a bonfire to raise school spirit for Homecoming. The job of raising school spirit is important, and having fun is also important. Staging a Christmas party equal to all others, was high- lighted by Bert Hensley bringing the image of Father Christmas - without the necessity of pad- ding - to the students. A skit written and pre- sented by the Creative Writing class was enjoyed by the student body. FRONT ROW: Diane Wahl, Doug Unruh, Pam Kehn. ROW 2: Tom Libby, Judy Wilcox. Besides the all important job of keeping the students informed on most daily activities, Mac Wahl ful- filled the job of Student Council President by act- ing as Master of Ceremonies at all Student Council sponsored assemblies and activities. The National Honor Societies consists of the top 15 percent of the high school students based 70 percent on grades and 30 percent on leadership, character, and service. One field trip per year is taken by the National Honor Society and it performs two service projects during the year. One of the service projects was the Christmas party, where the gifts were donated to the Enid Children's Hospital. The high point of the year for the Junior and Senior members was the ordering and receiving of their pins. FRONT ROW; K. Boehs, I. Kehn, J. Wil- cox, S. King, G. Martens, S. Rusch. ROW 2: D. Kirk, M. Many activities throughout the year involved the yearbook staff. These activities included a seminar in Weatherford, winning 1st place in the window sign contest for the Watonga game, placing 2nd in the spirit sign contest for the Homecoming game, and sponsoring a spirit door sign contest. At the OIPA meeting at O. U., the 1971 JACKET placed With Honors. Working five days during Christmas vacation, two during Semester tests, ana many nights, the staff managed to meet deadlines. Trav- eling to such far-away places as the Tulsa State Fair, Goodwell Judging contest, and Ft. Worth, the FFA proved to be one of the top chapters in the state. The chapter also displayed themselves success- fully in many local and county events. Besides the work and pressure of the judging contests, fairs, and stock shows, the FFA participated in many other activities including the FHA-FFA Halloween party and serving at the FHA Sweetheart Banquet. At the FFA Banquet in the spring, the awards were handed out to members and the queen was crowned. Money making projects included work day, magazine sales, and a pancake supper. Separate contest groups represented the school at the various festivals throughout the year. From hot August marching practices (com- plete with calisthenics) through cold weather sight-reading drills, the band improved and set its sights high for next year. Sponsored by the American Legion and Auxiliary, Lions Club and Moth- er's Club, its purpose is to spend a week developing in young people a sense of individual obligation as lead- ers in governmental affairs. Candidates are chosen on a basis of leadership, character, physical fitness, scholarships, cooperativeness, courage and honesty. Bob Van Meter, Jack Day, Don Elwell, Bob Smith. Administration Challenged By Today’s Problems Fairview High School owes a great deal of its heritage and success to the Fairview School Board. These five men have given the best educational facilities possible to the youth of Fairview. The board's policies were designed to fit local needs as well as state and national standards of excellence. During the 1971-1972 school year the school board has endeavored to serve as a link between school and community. The monthly meetings were devoted to discussions and action which involved administration, faculty, students, and the whole school community. A smooth-running school can be traced to an efficient superintendent. Bob Van Meter came to Fairview this year from Woodward where he served as principal of the High school. Mr. Van Meter has guided both school officials and students by the suggestions he offered and the decisions he reached. 58 In his third year at Fairview Don Friesen has demonstrated his continual awareness of the changing trends and ideas in education. He has incorporated these changes for the advancement of education at the Grade School. It takes a big man to fill the shoes of principal in a high school such as F. H. S. As the educational head of a learning institution Max Moyers must supervise the instructional program and work with the school board for improvements in curriculum. He must work with parant groups as the Band Boosters and Athletic Booster Club. With his continually reaffirmed interest in students, Mr. Moyers measures up to the demands of the principal's job. With his outstanding qualities of congeniality, willing cooperation and interest in students. Max Bentley is able to accomplish the complex task of coordinating the schedules of the Middle School with those of the Grade School and the High School. 59 Faculty Teamwork Builds Stable Year Perhaps the most enduring sound of a student's school life is that of his teacher’s voice. These men and women give uom an apparently inexhaust- ible supply of wisdom, patience, and encourage- ment. They are the spirit that makes the school a living thing - a place of learning and growth. Fall brought football and this class saw Fairview High go farther than ever before. In November, seniors pre- sented Be Happy? Go Wacky! to raise money for graduation expenses. As the months passed, caps and gowns were ordered, college appli- cants were made, and term papers were written. Skip week found the upperclassmen preparing for bacca- laureate, class night, and com- mencement exercises. This class now leaves the great halls of FHS but the memorable experiences and observations from this place are still firmly grounded in their minds. A new world lies before them - a world of decisions, choices, and more challenges. Senior Class leaders are: Sponsors Geraldine Bums, John Kessinger, and George Eubanks (not pictured). Juniors really jived in school organizations and were right on with the school spirit with 2 super cheer- leaders, 10 far-out basketballers, and 11 out-of- sight footballers. Never forgetting that they must receive complete education before they split to the wild world, the Juniors of '72 beebopped to classes with a true interest in learning. At last we were upperclassmen, making the scene in every way. At the beginning of the year, a new world opened and pre- sented us with an activity list we had never seen before, but we met and excelled that list. Activities such as F. H. A., F. F. A., chorus, and band found each member of the class of '74 leading to the year's success. The sports campaign saw many Sophomores getting a part of the action on the field, in the gym, and around the track. Our ideas, actions, and goals are forever a part of us, the class of '74.
