DEDIE , In the few years she has been at Fairport High School, Miss Mary Dedie has become well-known and well-liked by the student body. Miss Dedie was our English teacher in our junior and senior years. Her patience and her friendly smile, blended with a natural ability to teach, have made us appreciate the true value of English. Her faithful help as our CHATTER adviser and her diligent work on the HOUR GLASS have won our fervent admiration. To Miss Mary Dedie, whose patience and understanding have made this publication possible, we, the Class of 1950, present this'DSCAR and dedicate this HOUR GLASSI' '7 FAIRPGRT PUBLIC SCHOOLS THOMAS G. COFFEE, Superintendent NELSON R. BUR'roN. Principal N FAIRPORT, NEW YORK Dear Seniors: To you splendid young folk and your advisors, who have labored with earn- est loyalty to produce the 1950 Hour Glass, depicting the school life in Fair- port High School and the ideals we strive to build into character, goes our grateful praise. The selecting and assembling of materials, best illustrative of school life and ideals obtaining here, is a challenging assignment. Not alone must- the best and worthy be chosen, but it must be presented in good taste, sanc- tioned by artistic and editorial standards. This you have done so well that real satisfaction and pride must be yours. Former yearbooks have been of such merit as to discourage the hope of excelling. However, I an sure many will rate the 1950 Hour Glass as the best ever. The theme, MOVIES, cleverly conceives the importance of this great educa- tional agency in influencing character, and the need for wise and careful ap- praisal and selection of the offerings movies present. Wise choices cannot be too strongly urged. Financing the publication of so expensive a project, with the limited sales available, could be done only by the skillfully managed support of paid advertisements. Those in charge of this have exemplified good business manage- ment, another skill so helpful in successful living. You may have sacrificed an earlier date of publication by more careful deliberation than might have seemed necessary. However, you have gained in the quality of the work, an aim always to be kept in mind. My sincere congratulations to you fine young people and to those who so effectively helped. Very sincerely, Y -if I 3':-:-:-:- -!-?T'I:I'1'L-.'L- xrfifffifilz-.A 'E 3 .,.,..,. Nick Basile was elected to lead the class with the competent aid of Paul Cary, Vice-president, Bob Lewis, Treasurer, and Dolores Fehr, Secretary. The first and most successful financial venture was the sale of magazine subscriptions. The class of 1950 was awarded a plaque for selling over S1500 in subscriptions, an honor in Fairport High School history. On November 22, -1949, the Seniors took an enrapt audience to Gro- ver's Corners, New Hampshire, to visit Our Town. This successful Senior play was under the direction of Mrs. Lorensen. The Sno-Ball was presented in liecember. Its success was made possible through thejoint efforts of the whole class. The theme in green and white, was carried out with a white Christmas tree and pine boughs. King Carl Marlett and Queen Winifred Cobb reigned. Cleverly made programs shaped as snowballs and snowman tickets showed the ingenuity and originality of the students. Christmas cards and baked food sales, Nook proprietorship and a roller skating party helped supplement the treasury so that in early April the class set out for a four day trip to New York City. Senior advisers, Miss Florence Stolt and Mr. Bruce Banks, worked long andf hard to make the Senior e y ar a happy and profitable one. Guid- ing with wisdom and at' p ience, they made themselves indispensable. The senior officers, President Nick B ' ' ' C asile, Vice-president Paul ary, Treasurer Bob Lewis, and Secretary Delores Fehr led the class through a very successf 1 ' ' u year. With diplomacy and tact, Nick con- ducted senior meetings while Bob collect d th ' e dues and Delores recorded e minutes and took care of all correspondence. Paul Cary was read and waiting to take ove if Y r necessary. These leaders deserve the suc- cess which their ability has achieved. 1 ' HONOR STUDENTS MARILYN PITCHER DOROTHY CAWARD ANNE HUBBARD Salutatorian Valedictorian 91.78 92.-77 95.76 LAWRENCE HOLMES SUZANNE SMITH NICK BASILE 87.51 88.35 90.71 CAROL ADAMS Rep. To at- tend this duty, the care of the flag, Mrs. Ryon annually appoints a senior girl and a senior boy. This year the honor was given to Ioan Pritchard and jack Martin. Before class you see Iack raising the stars and stripes and at the end of the day, lowering them. It is 1oan's duty to present the flag to the next year's custodians on class day. These two seniors have done a splendid job this year. We are proud of them, as we are of the flag. We salute you-Ioan Prit- chard, Iack Martin, and the red, white, and blue. y 27 STUDENT PATROL Each year nineteen members of the junior class are chosen by advisers Miss Fortmiller and Mr. Warner to the student patrol. Last year Andy Lynch was elected captain with Bob Lewis as alternate. With An- dy's leaving Fairport, Bob took over his duties and By- ron Ellsworth assumed the responsibilities of alternate. The student patrol has many duties, the first of which is seeing that classes pass with the utmost order. It is their duty to suppress confusion, limit the noise, and, perhaps most important, to set a good example. The members are chosen for their reliability, response to direction, and general at- titude. Failing to observe these codes after appoint- ment, a member may be re- placed. No one on the patrol wishes to overlook these req- uisites, however, because of the honor, pride, and respon- sibility that are attached to his post. 1. PRITCHARD, 1. MARTIN SENIOR BALL The Sno Ball', held in De- cember proved to be a gala affair in green and white. Out of the candidates Anne Hubbard, Winnie Cobb, Sue Smith, Carl Marlett, Byron Ellsworth and Fred Parkison, Winnie Cobb ,reigned as queen and Carl Marlett as king. Sam Ansin provided dreamy music in keeping with the dimly lit atmosphere. The seniors turned a bleak gym and basketball court into a truly lovely ballroom. The decorations consisted of a draped ceiling of twisted green and white crepe paper and the bare walls were hidden with the same. SENIOR BALL KING AND QUEEN Standing: F. Parkison, C. Marlett, B. Cronkhite, R. Lewis. Grover's Corners, New Hampshire at the turn of the century came alive to an appreciative audience as the seniors presented Our Town. The play concerns the affairs of the Gibbs and Webb families whose lives became entangled in typical small town fashion. Our Town under the direction of Mrs. Lorensen was a great success. It represented a rev- olutionary idea in the type of plays usually presented by F.H.S. senior classes and the simplicity of the staging provided interesting entertain- ment for all who witnessed the play. Together they elect class officers and look forward to stunt night. joining the school clubs is high on their list of activities. Fun and frolic is the aim of every freshman. Then one wonderful year has passed: each student is a wise fool. The sophomores choose their officers and begin a gay year. Being pledged to a fraternity or sorority is one of the year's exciting moments. Interest in sports and clubs continues to be shown by the students. Social life and sportsmanship form a pattern for the sophomores. As upperclassmen, juniors assume new privileges and responsibili- ties. Thrifty class officers must be elected to earn and save money for the junior Prom. Activities such as publishing the school paper and preparing the junior Christmas Play, keep all the students busy. The juniors work hard, eagerly awaiting the day when they will take their place of honor as seniors. All in the school, directors, stars, extras, and behind-the-scene workers, make up the production. Early in the year the various clubs organize and take in new mem- bers. All work together to better the school and their clubs and to plan enjoyable activities. Meetings, dances,'baked food sales, teas, tags, initiations, and plays -these pictures are part of the life of F.H.S. Musical productions are sure to be hits, Early in the year the band and glee clubs begin tuning up and perfecting selections for the music festivals and spring concerts. The uthrillersv are provided by the sports department. Long and hard is the practice needed to acquire the skills of the different sports. The sports enthusiasts bring pleasure and honor not only to themselves but also to the whole school. A true picture of Fairport High School includes everyone. The size of each person's part is limited only by his willingness to contribute his ability to the activities of the school. - 1 ACTIVIT r Q S V 1? An outstanding sorority at Fairport High School is the Sigma Chi Delta. The club enjoyed a happy and successful year led by Carol Adams as, President, Anne Hubbard as Secretary, and Kaye Rourke as Treasurer. Miss Hodge is club adviser. By selling salt water taffy, baked foods, and sweatshirts the club made ample money to finance a houseparty at Honeoye Lake. These fun-loving girls can, however, be serious. After an impres- sive formal initiation for new members they set to work in earnest fixing Thanksgiving baskets for the needy and sending clothes to Kentucky. The Sigma Chi Delta merits a gold star for its many activities and good deeds during the year which was successfully brought to a close by the annual Square Dance. Cooperation toward a goal for success may well be the motto of the Visual Aid Corps. LIBRARY STAFF I w , S . . d 1 D oe . gfida' Thu. . Twenty-two members, having acquired the necessary number of points by performing in and working on dramatic production, were in- stalled during an impressive ceremony as Troupe 1038 in the National Thespian Society. These Thespians were guided by Mrs. Ingeborg Lorensen and elected as their officers: President, Anne Hubbard, Secre- taries, Joyce Diedrich and Suzanne Smith, and Treasurer, Mary Scida. The Junior Thespians were led by Miss Florence Stolt and performed with the National Thespians in various productions. They learned much about acting and look forward to graduating into the National Thespians when they have earned the required credits. The Backstage Guild was composed of eager members interested in the making of scenery, advertising, costuming, makeup, lighting and all the other essential aspects important in making a play successful. The officers were: President, Carol Adams, Secretary, Patricia Dorng and Treasurer, Rodney Deuel. The guild is directed by Mr. Banks. THESPIANS First Row: L. Root, A. Young, P. Dorn, N. Its officers are sen- iors who are assisted by two representatives from each class. To them, go thanks. It is important that their work be continued and its scope widened to keep an alert, loyal student body working for the good of the students and the school. 61a TWIRLERS IUNIOR TWIRLERS QLEFTJ Kneeling: G. Buck With a few old veterans to spark the team and a lot of new material the team came out pretty well considering last year's results. Winning three out of five county league games put F.H.S. in second place in the league. Two out of three non-league games were won giving Fairport five wins and three losses. In the last game F.H.S. played East Rochester, its old rival. It was a close game all the way but the Big Reds proved to be too much for E.R. The little brown jug once more came into Fairport's pos- session. Iim Brien made all county center for Fairport. For the first half F.H.S. ended third in the league, winning three out of six games. Bill Zim- mer, co-captain, made all county. In the second half Fairport was not able to win a game but came close and had some of the other teams worried. In the second half Fairport ended up in last place with no . wins. The second team was really the spark in the second half and came out undefeated. There is good material coming up next year. Bill Williams Fairport 48 . . . Fairport 38 . . .
