The dedicatee, Mr. Ernest Stirm, has been purposely pictured in his typical position of helping the students of Harding High School. Mr. Stirm's quiet orderly approach to his work, his example and personality have served as an inspiration to many students. For this and much more, we, the class of 1957, proudly dedicate this yearbook. Editor-in-Chief Susan Hill discusses staff Business Manager Robert Holpit types lists assignments with Assistant Editor Elizabeth of advertisers with Assistant Bruce Mackey Bacso and Feature Editor Carolyn Olle. 744 so-,za WSW The Harbor Light Staff has worked hard and long to bring you a book full of memories, full of life like pictures that will make your school experiences fresh and vivid in future years. We have tried to set the tone in the opening pages picturing the dedicatee in a working position and including many more pictures of what the staff feels is gen- uinely school life. We would especially like to thank our Advisor Mr. Knapp for his understanding assistance, Miss Rosemary Mackey for typing so much of our copy, the teachers and administrators for their cooperation, and our advertisers without whose support this project would never have been possible. The well-oiled machinery of the Fairport School System has come about largely through the efforts of the seven hard working citizens pictured above. Many of the policies tha have added so much to the balanced curriculum at Harding have been initiated by this group. Two of the seven seats, now empty, will be difficult to fill. One of those seats has been occupied by the late Grant Bittner, for seventeen years a vital force in public education at Fairport. The other vacancy has been caused by the resignation of Mrs. Hazel Farmer, who capably served as School Clerk for a ten year period. The Harbor Light staff extends their appreciation to an effective policy making body: The Fairport School Board. I OM7 MR. ASHMAN Industrial Arts MRS. BELDEN School Secretary MRS. It was absorbed as well in athletics, music groups, and plain old horsing around. Our sophomore year came and we were a bit more dignified, for after all, we WERE in senior high school now and no longer children. This is the year double periods hit us and we do mean hit, Before we realized it, our junior year was upon us and things began to develop. Athletics, the class stand, class rings, and, the prom were the high- lights of the year. It was obvious too that we were growing up for many of us now began to think of careers to follow. We also began to take a more serious interest in our studies. Well, that takes us up to where we are now - graduating seniors. With mixed feelings of joy and sadness, we leave these dear old walls. We go to face the world but we will face it confidently for we know that we have had the best education possible. Harding, we thank you. The highest honor which can be bestowed upon a high school student was given to eight seniors on January 30, 1957. These seniors were initiated into the National Honor Society, after having been chosen on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. After the eight seniors were tapped by W. R. Branthoover, principal, they were welcomed into the Society in an impressive ceremony. Each initiate received a certificate and an emblem pin. Other faculty members who participated in the cere- mony were Mr. Carl Williams, Mr. Charles Luoma, Miss Dorothy West, and Mrs. Mildred Martin. When we returned to school in September, we were not only confronted with new teachers, but with an ad- justment from the old double period system to the new single period system. Now we had to go through the whole year with a subject instead of having it for one semester. There were two new teachers this year. Mr. Ashman, the new shop teacher, and Mr. Rojeck whose gym classes presented quite a change from the old ones. For the seniors especially this is the year to remember. This was the year that meant the most through our entire high school life. Now we are ready to step out into the world on our own power . . . to face the challenge of the world alone. This year also we had the graduation of the last mid year class in high school. No more will Mr. Thomas fret and worry because his star players are graduating in the middle of the season. So we say to Janice Ticel, Roberta Alto, Rita Stenroos, Rosemary Mackey, Marlene Mackey, Margaret Wilson, Don Toth, Marvin Latva, John Brennan, Albin Ulle, Robert Ulle, Ray Nelson, Frank Quinn, Milton Thall, Richard Bell, Robert Stevens, and all your spirits that you should always remember that you were the last. One of these years you'l1 all be saying I remember when . . . This year is also to be remembered for those helpful citizens of Fairport, service clubs, and interested community groups who came forth willingly to assist the school in securing band uniforms, athletic equipment, etc. Lest we forget, a big word of Thanks is also due to the advertisers for this yearbook - without you there would be no yearbook. With all these changes and new ideas Qtoo numerous to mentionj we will all have to agree that this year was by far the best year we have all had. It will take a lot of dolng for anything or anybody to surpass it, but if it is surpassed - it will be by nothing but the best.
