FRED CARL WILSON Fred A man of the great outdoors. Mississinewa 152. 9121614 GQJS jfsfory The long-awaited moment had arrived. The lock on the time capsule had popped open, and people were crowded around in hopes of catching a peek at what New York had sealed away during the World's Fair years ago. First to be handed to the museum curator was a copy of the NEW YORK TIMES. Pande- monium burst loose when a triangular piece of felt with the words Long Live the Mets was opened to the breeze. Then a most curious book was found. Still spotless, it was a WHIRLWIND. The museum curator opened it to see rows of clean, well-dressed young men and women. When he realized that he was looking upon the graduating class of 1964 of Fairmount, Indiana, he was overwhelmed. News of the discovery spread over the world. Television flashed their faces to American homes, the newspapers printed these lines, found in a class history, of accomplishments of the class. The Freshmen of 1961 elected Rae Lee Adams to be president, Jaci Leach, vice-president, Van Hasty, secretary, Jerry Burgan, treasurer, Bonnie Baker and Dennis Clevenger, social chair- men, and Patsy Milligan and Jim Sparks, Student Council. Patsy Milligan was our Homecoming Attendant. We were the last class to be initiated at Fairmount High School, meeting our doom Nov- ember 18, 1961. Patty Ancil, our candidate for queen, was crowned at the Sweetheart Dance. Class sponsors Mrs. Florence Wood, Raymond Elliott, and Fred Wood accompanied us on our class party, a trip to Riverside Amusement Park. Upon our return to school as sophomores, we called upon Jerry Burgan to be president, Becky Davison, v i c e - p r e sid e nt, Rae Lee Adams, secretary, Patty Ancil, treasurer, Patsy Milligan, social chairman, and Connie Shane, Student Council. Julia Stitt was our Homecoming Attendant. Early in November we received our red and white class jackets from Anderson Sporting Goods. On February 13, 1962, we presented four unforgettable one-act plays. These first theatrical productions were LIFE OF THE PARTY, THE LOTTERY, THE BISHOP'S CANDLESTICKS, and LADIES OF THE MOP. Patsy Milligan was our candidate for queen of the Sweetheart Dance. Our sponsors again were Mrs. Florence Wood, Raymond Elliott, and Fred Wood. Our class party started at a movie and ended at Bakers' farm. At the half-way mark in our high school education, we returned as juniors with Mrs. Florence Wood, Hugh Caughell, and John Roberds as our sponsors. Jim Sparks was our presi- dent, Phil Sicks, vice-president, Patty Ancil, secretary, Becky Davison, treasurer, Susan Bunch and Steve Smith, Student Council, and Julia Stitt and Randy Shane, social chairmen. Roberta Hipskind was the Junior Attendant at Homecoming. Our sparkling class rings, which came from Jostens in September, were the cause of much attention. Experienced actors now, we presented THE NEIGHBORS, THE TRYSTING PLACE, and WHERE THE CROSS IS MADE on November 2, 1962. Again our Sweetheart candidate, Peggy Richards this time, reigned as queen. We used our hard-earned conces sion money to give the '63 Seniors a prom May 10 at Honeywell Memorial. Osting's dance band played while juniors and seniors danced in a room decorated as Paris in the Spring. Heading down the stretch toward graduation, we decided to stay witha winning team. Jim Sparks, Phil Sicks, Patty Ancil, and Becky Davison were all elected to new terms of office. Our social chairmen were Susan Bunch and Larry Thurman, our Student Council representative was John Bagley. Mrs. Lucile Sicks, Hugh Caughell, and Fred Wood were our class sponsors. Patsy Milligan was the Homecoming Queen, Peggy Richards was the Senior Attendant. The Seniors attended vespers February 16, 1964, at the Methodist Church. Charles Mishler spoke to three dozen members of the class. Julie Craw was queen of the Sweetheart Dance. Very proficient in the theater arts, we staged YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU, April 10. The Juniors hosted us to a prom in the Cardinal Room of Ball State Teachers College, May 16. On the evening of May 25, we walked down the aisles of the festively-decorated gymnasium to receive our diplomas. All the nation agreed that this was a special senior class. It played an important role in the Christmas and Thanksgiving convocations. It sponsored a pep dance before the basketball game with Mississinewa and another pep dance before the sectional. This group also led the homecoming parade. This year the band did something novel. The members marched on the football field and on the basketball court during halftime. This year was also the first year for the formation of a pep band, which consisted mainly of junior and senior students. The duty of this group was to perform during pep sessions and at halftime during basketball games. Mr. McCoy not only directed the band but also helped with the art work in the Whirlwind. Mr. Wood and the Whirlwind Staff wish to thank Mr. McCoy for his assistance. Fairmount High School has not had a chorus since the early 195O's, with the exception of 1961-62 when Mrs. Nall consented to organize and direct a choral group. Although this was a step in the right direction, it was not a satisfactory arrangement. Concern in the community and in the school too caused Mr. Smith to hire a trained director and to place chorus in the regular curriculum. Mr. Charles Kenworthy was responsible for teaching the regular chorus class and for conducting the group during special appearances. During the past year the regular chorus met as a regular class. There was also an extra curricular chorus which met after school three times a Week. It consisted of members of the regular chorus plus other interested people. This gave students who had a full schedule a chance to participate in singing. The com- bined choruses performed at many events, such as convocations, between plays, and at Christ- mas and Easter. The Quakerettes, appearing in new turquoise blue outfits, performed between the B-team and varsity basketball games. They participated in drills with the band or gave a floor show of their own with the band playing background music. The Twirlers also marched in the Home- coming Parade. The Quakerettes are made up of grade school, junior high, and high school girls who are willing to practice after school at least once a week. A girl may start practicing with the Quakerettes when she enters the third grade. Susan Hackney, a 1962 graduate of Fairmount High School, instructed the girls. While in high school, Susan served as head twirler. During 1963-64 Barbara Moore served as captain of the twirlers. This was her first year as captain. Bobbie Howell acted as co-captain. X , , ! Through participation on this team, the individuals involved have hastened their journey on the road to manhood. No greater thrill can be awarded an athlete than that feeling of pleasure he receives when his efforts contribute to the team's success. Hrs if Qi hd f -. ,.,y Tim Titus Quafef GTSIQ Larry Barnes, 6' Senior Forward Larry was one of the best corner shooters in the area. His outstanding free-throw shooting kept him consistently near the 90 per cent mark. After the County Tourney, Larry developed a habit of coming on strong in the scoring column during the second half. This trait helped the team gain victories over Royerton and Maconaquah. Larry received a sportsmanship award from a weekly sports program. Joe Ricks, 6' 3 Senior Center Joe shared the starting center position on this year's team. No member of the team gave greater effort. He worked hard on his rebounding and became a valuable offensive tipper and defensive board man. In the pressure-packed moments of the County Tourney, it was Joe who scored three buckets to put the Quakers in the final game. Jim Hamilton, 5' 9 Senior Guard Jim was selected by his teammates as captain. He was the team's leading scorer, although usually guarded by the opponent's best defensive players. His hustle and long jump shots turned several games from the lost to the victory column. Always the Sportsman, Jim received the highest honor an individual can receive in the Grant County Tourney, the WBAT sportsmanship trophy. He leaves a big pair of shoes to be filled by next year's team. Van Hasty, 5' 8 Senior Guard Van started in only two games but was admired by all for his hustle and desire. He brought the team alive on several occasions when he entered the line-up. A hot-and- cold shooter, there was none better when he was on. His contributions to the team were important inachievinga winning season. ' Terry Haisley, 5' 10 Junior Guard Terry played the first half of the season on the B-Team and the last half on the varsity. He showed lots of promise as a scorer. His ball handling and timely scoring helped out in several late-season games. This was his first year to letter. Steve Martin, 6' 4 Junior Center Steve shared the starting center spot this year. He had troubles early in the season, but later came on strong as a dependable scorer and rebounder. His 19 points in the last quarter of the Montpelier game was a team high for quarter play. Steve has the physical make-up and potential to become an outstanding center. Reece Peacock, 6' 2 Junior Forward Reece made tremendous improvement over the previous season. The team's best defensive player, he held several opponents to their lowest scoring efforts of the season. He worked hard at the offensive board and was one of four team members scoring over 200 points. If Reece works hard to curtail his fouling, he will be one of the best basketball players ever at F. H. S. Bob Wilkerson, 6' Junior Center f This was Bob's first year in organized ball. He had many moves and rebounded well on the B-team. If he works hard this summer, he will have a chance of being on next year's first five. Richard Wood, 6' 1 Junior Forward Richard started the season as a regular and led the team in scoring in their victory over archrival Mississinewa. However, he sprained his ankle and never regained his first-of-year form. Richard is a good shooter and could be a standout on next year's team. Jerry Warr, 6' 1 Junior Forward Jerry played only a couple of games on the varsity. He has a very good eye for the basket and scored in double figures often in B-team games. Jerry should also be a strong candidate for next year's first five. Jerry Collins, 6' l Junior Forward Jerry played the early part of the season on the B-team. He showed a lot of desire and hustle on the varsity the last part of the year, as he was a rugged rebounder and hard worker on defense. With the experience gained this year, he should be a strong candidate for next year's first five. Tim Titus, 5' 8 Sophomore Guard Tim came on strong early in the season to gain a starting guard position. He was the best driver on the team, but has not yet developed his potential. He has the physical capabilities to be an outstanding defensive player. Tim helped to make the fast break work. He should be a top candidate for a starting guard position next season. 83 M9377 30554651 jeam FIRST ROW: Larry Collins, Kenny Jones, Mike Cox, Wilson Hunt, Kenny Seward.
