Senior Class History In September. 1949 our Freshman year. the class enrollment swelled to 72 with additions from the country schools. Officers elected at the first meeting on September 9, 1949, were Paul Thurs- ton. presidentg Tom Pulley. vice-presidentg Bob Cline. secretaryg Jim Ellingwood, treasurerg Fred Parrill. historiang Louise Bruner and Dewayne Payne. social chairmen. After being initiated by the seniors, we felt that we finally belonged to F. H. S., though I must say being initiated is the hard way to get to belong. Later in the fall we chose Lora Nell Smith as our Carnival Queen candidate. The class held two skating parties. which provided fun for all and profit for us. A chile supper held in January started off our sec- ond semester as 'high school students on the right foot. After a summer spent in varied pastimes the class of '53 returned as sophomores. The first busi- ness of the year was the election of officers. who were Jim Ellingwood, president, Tom Pulley, vice- president: Lola Small. treasurer: Louise Bruner. secretary: Jill Corn and Dick Grindle, social chairmen: Fred Parrill. historian. The first activity of the year was the Fall Festival. The class elected Jim Ellingwood and Wanda Carr as its candidates for king and queen honors. When the student coun- cil was reactivated we chose as our representatives Phyllis Shaver and Bill Payne. The high-light of the year was the arrival of our beautiful maroon and white sweaters in November. During the next few months the class held one regular party and two skating parties. TO close our sophomore year we held an autograph dance in conjunction with the distribution of the Black and Golds. This dance became an annual affair which has always met with success. .September 1951 saw us as juniorsg boy did we feel proud. But we never had a chance to get con- cieted. The seniors were always around to put us in our places. The officers for our next-to-the last year in F.H.S. were Bill Payne. presidentg Paul Thurston, vice-presidentg Louise Bruner, sec- retary: Jim Ellingwood. treasurerg Lola Small and Dick Grindle, social chairmeng Fred Parrill his- torian. Kay Ann Smith and Bernie Joe Lehman were our representatives on the Student Council. At a special meeting shortly after school started. we transacted the annual junior business. We Ordered our class rings. They arrived in plenty of time for Christmas and were really beautiful. We held two skating parties. which were very successful both from the entertainment stand- point and the financial standpoint. We chose as our junior play Men Are Like Streetcarsi' It was a comedy which everyone enjoyed presenting. Our Candidates at the Fall Festival were Louise Wright and Veinon Harrell. In the spring we gave the seniors their annual prom in the gymnasium. The theme was It happens Every Spring and every- one present enjoyed himself greatly. Dancing was to the music of Emil Moss and his orchestra and refreshments were served by girls from the class. Again. as last year, our final activity was the Autograph Dance, which was attended by a good crowd. When we finally made it. most of us didn't quite know how to act. Seniors at last. It took a little getting used to, but we made it in fine shape. It seemed funny for awhile. not having any older kids than us in school. but it was really a good feeling. Officers elected at our first meet- ing after the summer vacation were Fred Parrill. presidentg Bill Payne, vice-presidentg Louise Brun- er. secretary: Lola Small, treasurer: Judy Kesler and Dick Grindle. social chairmen. The student council representatives this year were Kay Ann Smith, Bernie Joe Lehman. and Phil Compton. Bernie was chosen by the council as its president. The class nominated Louise Bruner as its Fall Festival candidate. Our first real business of the year was initiating the freshmen. which we did with gusto. The event took place in the gym, be- cause the auditorium was closed for repairs. A bake sale and a New Year's Eve dance were first semester projects, which occupied some of our time. Selling magazines netted the class treasLu'y some much-needed money and provided a free turkey supper for all. Lola Smith was chosen to represent Fairmount in the county D.A.R. Good Citizen contest. We chose navy blue gowns and white tassles for our graduation garb. Our senior play was 'Seventeenth Summer, a production which we all enjoyed greatly. Climaxing our high school careers were the Baccalaureate Services and Commencement rites. These occurred on Sunday. May 17, and Monday. May 18, respectively. Somewhat dejected by such an exciting and abrupt end to our high school days we were. nevertheless. eager for the next three days to pass so that We could begin our long anticipated Eastern trip to Washington, D. C., and New York City. Starting on May 21 and returning May 26. we experienced five of the most glorious days of our lives. And so. the class of 1953 re- turned to their homes exhausted in mind and body. with all bonds with Fairmount -High School se- vered except the bonds of friendship and happy memories- Sponsored By The Fairmount News-Your Home Town Paper
