During our four years at lf. ll. we have procrastinated and worried the pedagogues about as niucli as any of our forerunners. only we got lay with inuch of it and so havent left quite such a bloody path as soine of the classes. To begin with we are an ancient lot. Xvhen we started in only three girls in the class had their hair luolilied and they just grew up that way and couldnt help it. Then one could get out of any asseinlnly, hy just signing a paper. The lioys were running the locker rooin under the stairs in full hlast. Lacy Shore hadnt joined the arniy hecause of a lgiroken heart. Mac Walters was our sponsor, and we had a feininine president, Celia l-layworth. ln lU2-l twenty-seven girls had their hair cut UNCC in a while and we began to come out of the woods and find out what it was all almout. lf the haircut's aren't enough proof of this get out your N24 annual and see for yourself. We traded Mac Walters for Bliss :Xrnold and Hr. liilergdoll and we've had a Latin teacher ever since. lfred jones was president and the vice- president did a lot of heart lwrealting. the first prominent niove in this di- rection we made. 1925 found us with Bliss Arnold married, hut still explaining to the Latin people how niuch Gaul Caesar had, and Mr. tlaley in Bergdolls place. Love affairs were becoming' more and inore complicated, as such things have a way of doing. Wie lmegan acquiring the sophisticated look you have doubt- less noticed we now have. This can be proved lwy a second inspection of old annuals. We had an outstanding party at Hrs. XYinslow's and gave the Seniors a reception, a great surprise to us both: it caine as a sort of inspira- tion. The other social event of the year cost two seinoleons and several citif zenship grades: a few representatives at the Freshman party acted on the entertainment connnittee. Harold Mahoney flourished as president. a very etticient one. This year we went through the usual orgies, got our rings, pins, cards, and invitations, and caine out of it in fine shape. Speaking of otticcrs the world must hand us at least one rose hecause we have always usecl discrini- ination in electing treasurers, inoney is one thing one has to watch. Ed Lafler played the title role of Clarence , our class-play. and kept up his rep- utation, too. Miss Kenyon, who took llrs, XX1nslow's place as sponsor directed the play aided hy Mrs. XYood. Since we are leaving, we would like to tell the rest of the school that heing a Senior isn't quite Su complicated as it sounds. . .I-ln-n- -, - - ,. .. .. .... .--- H..-im ------- ..- - - - - -,,.,-,.5, + m +H-i-- ---- -- ----- i- - Zlilark auh Quits --1- --H- fe 4, ' f v X it 7 , A., ' .V n 2' 4,12 Z fm, 'Z F 7 1 2 .W 44? fy yy' i,,.1.' 1f.,, ' j f MMV? A PRESHIATION OB DE JUN IORS Friends, l is glad to see dat so many ob ye had aQ'g'reg'ated yourselyes heah on dis grand March eyenin' io, to listen to mah short discourse on de class ob 1927, because in a rite short time dc class ob '27 will once agane be gone until next fall. Let me say to begin with, mah friends, dat l is heartily in favor ob edjucashun. Yes sah. Hut now let me tell ye: l kin read, rite, spell, and figgfah, And dat's enuft fer enny jiggali. Now bretherin, letls be serious and ask ouahselyes de question down deep into de bottom ob ouah, hearts, Has wc, as citizens ob Fairmount, ap- preshiated de juniors in de past as we had ought to hab And now l will answah dat question by saying most emphatically, dat we has not. No sah. Friends, jes give me youar divided intention fo' about a minute and listen carefully to what I is about to proclaim. Three years hah passed since these boys and girls has comed into ouah midst. De first year was a year ob be- ginnin's and heah was laid de foundation ui a class dat in quality far sur- passes any dat has preceded it. De next year was full ob wah and pleasure which helped them to become what they now areka class known fo' its intelligence, love fo, truth and all dat is right and honorable. +.-n:- 1-11 ililiiii l Hg- 11i111111 i1-- I I IIQHQQ Q3 ,nw 4 H1 -vHv- '+ .g...-....-..n-,,..-...H-.,..-.W-,...-H.,-..,.-....- gjglafk ann -..,,..,..,..,.,,-w-w-HH--W'- X W 'I ffl: ' HKS ' --uw ,wig- ' 1 ,,3m , K gg :- , ,jf f s S 2 .,-'1.z,ep.-if ' Q. ef, 3 - Q X ,, i5g.,:'2y,Q 44: ,xg V -' xr .MW ' ' '-'M N'f nfmfw ,Y-f ' 39.5 A:-1:'LFf . Perhaps the spirit of F. H. S., cannot be better symbolized than by its emblem, the acorns and oak leaves. A school is the ground upon which the little acorns are cast. NXhetl16F these acorns develop into sturdy handsome oaks or scrubs or do not AQVUYOV' at all depends upon several things: the soundness of the acorn, COI1fQl1l1U115 of the soil, and the climate. The unsound worm eaten acorn will not even germinate, The smooth fertile plains of the temperate zone make it possible for the sound acorn to grow into an oak of greater size and beauty while the barren wind swept, rock strewn mountain or the frigid zone would retaffl if not prevent its growth. The unsound acorn cannot be helped by the schools, but the school can till and enrichen the soil upon which the acorns are thrown that the sound healthy ones may grow and flourish. This thing F. H S. has endeavored to do and has done. The soil upon which the future oaks are cast is the equipment. CL1TI'lCUlU1Tl. and instructors. This soil may or may not be rich. ln the case of F. H. S. it is of the best. The climate is the progressiveness and the spirit of the pupils and instructors. Here at F. H. the climate is enhanced by the spirit of friendly co-operation and by the helpfulness of the instructors toward higher attainments in all phases of life. The growth of F. H. S, itself may be likened to that of an oak. lt started in a small way under rather adverse conditions, but the acorn proved sound and sturdy. It has made a slow dependable growth for many years and in the last several years it has grown to be one of the very best of its kind in the school forest of Indiana. lt tosses mighty branches to the breeze and shelteringly hovers over all the acorns committed to its care. The man- agement and supervision are most efficient, the equipment modern and the principles lofty. livery condition is made favorable for the acorns cast upon it, that they may grow and flourish. I A 'Z 2 f ' wif f 5111: 7 if 1 T Arthur Payne Tennis Vlianipion +,,-,,.. .. -. -in TENNIS TOURNAMENT Mr. Neel announced a tennis tournament to promote interest in tennis whieh, for a few years has been in the background in Fairmount. After this announcement the courts were filled from Tziill to 8:30, from 11:45 to 12:-10 and 4:05 until dark. When the call for entrants was issued about fifty hoys iepoited and drew their opponents for the first game. A set of two winning' ganies out of three games played meant a step Iiigflier in the tounrament. The elimination games raged on for two weeks and four boys finally emerged to push on for that set goal. These hoys were 1Villiam Hill, Ed Iafler, Harry Weaver, and Art Payne. Harry Wleaver was subdued by Ed Lafler in a Iiertie hattle. VVhiIe Art Payne overpowered Bill Hill in a slow game. This left Art and Ed for the final. The best game of the tournament was the finals, A large crowd was there to witness the games and much interest was taken in them. Each was a ttcleueen game. Although Lafler fought a good fight, Payne won the right to be called The Champ tennis-player of Fairmount High School. .. .-. .. -.,.- .. - ... -..,,.-.,.-..........-.,.-,.,....,,,-............., - - - .. .......-...!.
