Services provided by Fairmont's guidance counselors are designed to assist the individual stu- dent in making the most of his own opportunities while he is in school. Personal conferences are ar- ranged for individual assistance. Each student is given a chance to discuss problems and school courses with his counselor. Group instructions aid the student in selecting a college or a vocation. Academically Talented .epresenting Fairmont as National Merit semi-finalists are: Jerry Malone, Joyce ittenhouse, Peggy Langston, Eleanor Whiteside, Tom Metz and Sandi Sizer. Chosen as Fairmonfs representative to the first Atoms for Peace conference is Bill Weist. Fairmont boasts a healthy record of Megg- headsf, Bill Vlfeist exemplifies the efforts of all con- scientious students. He was nominated as a Dayton area representative to the national '4Atoms for Peace conference. . Fairmont hails six National Merit semi-final- istsg Peggy Langston, Jerry Malone, Tom Metz, Joyce Rittenhouse, Sandi Sizer, and Eleanor White- side. Seventy-one seniors compose the Senior Schol- arship Team, chosen on the basis of an elimination test. Those with the highest scores were named as team members. For two weeks, the students pre- pared for the Ohio Senior Scholarship Test by at- tending review sessions led by teachers of each area of study. 'ont row: Ken Wallace. Thespians Receive National Acclaim in Theatre, Stage, and Drama Dramatic, humorous, and oratorical interpre- tation, original oratory and extemporaneous speak- ing, poetry reading, one-act play, radio program, and radio announcing are the areas covered by speech and dramatics. ln this course, the students? with speaking experience refine their present skills and cultivate new ones. ln basic speech, the beginner is given the op- portunity to do platform speaking, develop poise and confidence, profit by sharing constructive criticism, and appreciate fully the importance of modern news media. In extemporaneous speaking, a knowledge of national and international affairs-economics, poli- tics, and history-is gained. Debate deals with one clearly defined area on which research and documentation is required. This yearis topic, for instance, is uliesolved, that the United States should promote a common market for the Western Hemispheref' 'Thorough knowledge of Latin America, the United States, and Canada is involved. All successful men must be able to convey and comprehend ideas. For this reason, speech educa- tion is invaluable. Miss Funck radiates news she has earned the second diamond for her N.E.L. pin.
