l Mrs, Hoffmann familiarizes her classes with the Globe Theatre, made famous by the Shakespearian plays presented there. JI ' ini age' A . I is Miss Kennedy, head of the English department realizes the importance of student participation. Friday nights found Mrs. Bayless, one of Fairmont's new teachers, cheering the Fighting Dragons on to victory. Whether the student is headed for college or for a career, the three years of English he receives at Fairmont will prepare him for the future. The goal of our English department is to give the students not only a basic understanding of grammar, spelling, and composition, but also a wide knowledge and appre- ciation ofthe great literary works. As sophomores, the basic foundation in both English and American literature is given. ENGLISH In the junior year, the importance of American literature is stressed. Shakespeare' and other English writers are studied by Seniors. Grammar is reviewed each year with special emphasis in the sophomore year. Clarity and conciseness are the English teachers' favorite words for composition work. In fact, Shakespeare him- self wrote that, Brevity is the soul of wit.
