The Steel Band ' s music ranged from classical to rock and roll on oil drums. This fact in itself as- tounded the audience, but also because of the un- believable fidelity and artistic accomplishment with which they performed each concert or dance num- ber, whether it be modern, classical or native ca- lypso. The calypso numbers were combined with exciting dancing and chanting. The band performed such numbers as Handel ' s Hallelujah Chorus, Khachaturian ' s Sabre Dance, and several selections from the rock musical Hair. Above and Below: Trinidad Tripoli Steel Band performs some of their outstanding music on oil drums. Set To Music Set to Music, a two-part program, ap- peared on Oct. 20 in Wallman Hall. The program was sponsored by the Convocation Committee. Selections from the musical theater were included in part one. They included, No, No, Nanette, Oklahoma, Pal joey, Carousel, Kiss Me Kate, and Most Happy Fella. Part two consisted of contemporary selec- tions from the shows Hair, The Fantas- tiks, Little Mary Sunshine, and Your Own Thing. The group finished with a sur- prise rock finale. Five talented artists composed the casts for this production. They include, Ted Bow- lin, Richard Flanders, Andrea Levine, Harri- son Fisher, and Patti Perkins. Jw 28 — Activities Oedipus Rex Oedipus Rex, Sophocles! Classic tragedy of the king who slays his father and weds his mother, was presented by the National Players on Feb. 4 in Wallman Hall. A play of action, poetry, and emotional power spans the centuries as a classic. The tale of the ill fated king is constructed with the finely-drawn skill of a masterful detec- tive story. The performance was financed in half by the West Virginia Arts and Humanities Council and Fairmont State College Program Committee. Activities — 29 Vanguard Theater The Vanguard Theater, sponsored by the Convoca- tions Committee, appeared in Wallman Hall on Nov- ember 30. Three one act plays were performed: The Chairs by Eugene Lonesco, Camera Obscura by Robert Pa- trick and The Zoo Story by Edward Albee. Conceived and directed by Marcelle Feiner, Van- guard ' s Creative Director, the production cast includes Bonita Bray, Dav id Bray, and Tom Dennis. ? New Cleveland String Quartet gave a brilliant performance on March 1 in Wallman Hall. The Quartet performed three numbers by Moz- art, Bartok, and Beethoven. Members of the Cleveland Quartet include Paul Katz, Martha Strongin Katz, Peter Salaff and Donald Weiler- stein. New Cleveland Quartet is being considered for presentation at the celebrated mecca of chamber music, the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Debut tours of South America and Europe will take place during the 1971-72 season. New Cleveland Strin Quartet Activities 31 Guest Speakers Right: PEARL S. BUCK -- Native West Virginian and Nobel Prize winner spoke on, My Several Worlds As I See Them at the Fairmont Theatre on Nov. 11. Lower right: ANSON MOUNT - Public affairs man tor Playboy Magazine, was feature speaker for the Wesley Foundation ' s program on The Values Revolution. Mount spoke on Playboy ' s Contribution to the Values Revolution. Lower left: FLOYD B. McKISSICK - Noted civil rights leader and National Director of CORE spoke on April 6 in the Student Center Ballroom. Left: VICTOR CHRIST-IANER - Distinguished architect, gave a public lecture on Architecture as Art and a convocation address on, Beyond Architecture. Activities — 33 Fairmont College Library Homecoming — 1970 Beautiful girls, sunshine, and Falcon enthusiasm were all a part of the char- isma of Homecoming 1970. Activities began Friday, Oct. 23, with a parade in the evening, followed by an informal dance in the ballroom. A full stadium of students, alumni and fans gathered to see the Concord Mountain Lions fall to the Falcons, 40-12. Following the game, several fra- ternities and sororities sponsored re- ceptions for visiting alumni, and an Alumni Banquet was held in the caf- eteria. Homecoming queen, Becky Weaver, was presented a bouquet of roses dur- ing halftime activities Saturday after- noon, and was crowned by college president, Dr. Eston K.
