Each spring outstanding junior wo- men are selected on the basis of scholarship, leadership, in- tegrity, and loyalty to the college. FLAMES, Junior Women ' s Honorary, was organized in 1966 for the purpose of hon- oring junior women who have shown outstanding leadership, character, and service to the college and have maintained at least a 2.8 grade average. WHO ' S WHO includes outstanding students who have shown scholarship, participation, leadership in academic and extracurricular activities, citizen- ship, and service to the school. They are chosen once a year by an impartial council of seven juniors and sophomores, and six faculty members. Officers are elected by the residents to serve in a social capacity, and counselors are hired by the college. 21 KAPPA GAMMA, debate honorary, is a branch of the Forensics Society. The honorary is open to those college de- baters who have participated with skill in a minimum of five rounds of intercol- legiate debate. Forensics Society officers must have qualified for membership in Kappa Gamma. FORENSICS SOCIETY at FSC was or- ganized to promote • and encourage for- ensics activity, specifically debate, oratory and extemperaneous speaking. They aim to encourage speaking about significant current international questions and inter- collegiate forensics competition. Members must be FSC students and must maintain a 2.0 average. This membership affiliates them with the State Home Economics As- sociation and the American Home Economics Association. AMERICAN CHEMICAL SO- CIETY is an organization of stu- dents with majors and minors in chemistry. They have programs to further their education and go on field trips to acquaint themselves with prospective jobs. The National Headquarters in Washington, D. C. provides in- formation to the students and acts as a clearing house for jobs and graduate schools. 24 LAMBDA DELTA LAMBDA, national phys- ical science honorary, was organized on Fair- mont State College campus in 1925. Mem- bers are reguired to have an overall 3.0 grade average and a 3.0 average in at least 14 hours of chemistry and physics. Mrs. Eleanor Ford, associate professor in physics, is faculty adviser. BETA BETA BETA is an organization for outstanding students of the biological sci- ences. Members are reguired to have a 3.0 grade average in at least 10 hours of biology and a 2.3 overall grade average. This year associate members, with at least a 2.5 grade average in biology, were given social standing in this honorary. Service proj- ects include labeling trees on campus and cleaning the arboretum, the area where trees and shrubs are grown for study. Members have sponsored several camping trips along with their advisers, Dr. Robert E. Amos and Dr. William D. Creasy. Leadership, scholarship, and character are the traits that any FSC student must have to become a member of the national education honorary, KAPPA DELTA PI. Under scholarship the student must have a 3.0 over-all average and a 3.0 average in the education field. This honorary was established at FSC in 1931 as Beta Omega Chapter with the purpose of encouraging high professional, intel- lectual, and personal standards, and recognizing outstanding contributions to education. Sponsored by the West Virginia Education As- sociation and the National Educational Association, the STUDENT NATIONAL EDUCATIONAL AS- SOCIATION for students in the education field is a professional organization at FSC. Its purpose is to acquaint the student with the type of people they will be working with in the future. SIGMA TAU DELTA, national English honorary, was formed in 1964. Its purpose is to encourage interest and participation in ac- tivities related to English majors. Members must have completed a minimum of five English courses with at least a 3.0 grade average. As its main project, the organ- ization sponsors the publishing of Sketches, a collection of FSC literary works. John W. King serves as faculty adviser. The club is a local group with national affiliation through the American Vocational Association and was formed at Fairmont State in 1948. All Industrial Arts Technology students are eligible for membership. EPSILON PI TAU is an International Honorary Professional Fraternity in Indus- trial Arts and Technical Education. Group ideals include to esteem the function of skill, social and professional efficiency and to foster, publish, and reward research. Kenneth G. Wise, professor, and L. W. Although the club is of special interest to social sci- ence students, anyone who is concerned with forming a peaceful and understanding world community is wel- come to join the club. Club members participate in conferences, workshops, and model United Nations sessions. Programs, displays, and special speakers are presented for the public monthly by the club. IRC is officially associated with the Regional Council for International Education and the Council for Interna- tional Relations and United Nations Affairs. Its overall operation is responsible to the Board of Education of the West Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. NEWMAN APOSTOLATE is a group of Catholic Culture and Fellowship. They foster the spiritual, intellectual and social interests of FSC Catholic students by binding them into a common union and assisting Fairmont State and its students whenever possible. Monthly meetings are held to discuss latest style trends on campus and to learn of fashion developments of New York and Europe. Purpose of PHI EPSILON CHI is to promote professional interest and enthusiasm in health, physical education, recreation and safety among the woman Physical Education majors and minors of FSC. Every incoming women student in the field of Physical Education is automatically considered a member and is expected to participate. The purposes of the group are to promote school spirit and to encourage better relations between the five so- cial fraternities already on the campus. The pledges pictured below are t he charter members. They consist of five members from each fra- ternity. However, future pledge classes will consist of both Greeks and Independents, with smokers being held each semester. Pledges wear robes and carry canes every Friday. They attend all home football games and the most important home basketball games in this attire. Active members of Fi Batar Cappar can be distinguished by their black derby hats. Faculty advisor is Robert Coralline a Fi Batar Cappar alumnus from West Virginia University. The following groups participated: Sigma Sigma Sigma, Phi Mu, Alpha Xi Delta, Sigma Kappa, Delta Zeta, Tau Beta lota, and the Good Timers. The event was sponsored by the Interpanhellenic Council. Delta Zeta, under the direction of Rayette Dippolito, captured first place with Do You Remember When. Phi Mu won second place with It ' s a Good Day. RIGHT: Twirler Judy Kinnan captivated the audience during the band ' s half-time show. 66 Homecoming 1969 Homecoming festivities officially began on Friday, Oct. 3, with a parade through downtown Fairmont. Bill Beasi, sophomore class president, was the parade marshall. The football game was played on Saturday after- noon at Rosier Field. A Faicon victory over Glenville pleased the many alumni who had returned to Fair- mont for the weekend. Several fraternities and sorori- ties held receptions after the game to welcome their visiting members. Following the Alumni Banquet at the cafeteria, the homecoming dance was held at the Student Center. Last year ' s queen, Shirley Beil, was present to assist at the coronation. Becky Young, a -freshman from St. Albans, reigned as queen over the homecoming festivities. Other members of the Quintet are James Moody, woodwind; Candy Finch, drums; Mike Longo, piano; Jymie Merritt, bass. West Virginia Festival of Arts was held at Fairmont State College June 15-30 in cooperation with The Ameri- can Wind Symphony Orches- tra of Pittsburgh. Concerts featuring Dizzy Gillespie and His Quintet, American Wind Symphony Orchestra, Peter J. Wilhousky, Albert Tipton, Paul Price, Jose Serebrier, and Honnegar ' s King David were highlights of the Festival. The program was open to high school and college musi- cians. The varsity squad traveled to the University of Pittsburgh, University of North Carolina, Emery Uni- versity, Bridgewater, Va., Duquesne University, Harvard University, and Kent State University. The novice team participated in three tournaments, one at St. Vincent ' s and two in Marietta, Ohio. At the latter tournament, the team won first place trophy and three individual speakers trophies. Debaters who traveled to the University of Pittsburgh were (seated) Carolyn Stevens, Charie Thralls, Darlene McCoy, (standing) John McDougal, Betty Sandy, and Duane Southern. Jane Carpenter, Donna Garrett, Darlene McCoy, and Teresa Kidd won four trophies at the Marietta Novice Tournament. 76 Vietnam Moratorium More than 500 American colleges and universi- ties observed Vietnam Moratorium Day Oct. 15. The series of anti-war actions was instituted last spring by the Vietnam Moratorium Committee, whose office is in Washington, D.C. The moratori- um was an effort to maximize public pressure to end the war by encouraging a broad section of Americans to work against the war. Jim Butcher organized Fairmont State College ' s participation. Approximately 125 students and fac- ulty members participated on a voluntary basis. John D. Jay Rockefeller Secretary of State Dr. Wesley Bagby WVU Professor A number of FSC students and faculty members marched downtown to the Court House to hear speeches by Rockefeller and Bagby. 77 Science Hall Ground Breaking Participating in the ceremony were Dr. Eston K. Feaster, college president; Attorney Albert M. Morgan of Morgantown; James Butcher, student body president; Joseph Ford. FSC Alumni Association president; Albert Robinson, mayor of Fairmont; Dr. William Ruoff, chairman of the Division of Science; Dr. James LaRue, chairman of the Department of Mathematics. Ground breaking ceremonies for the new Science Hall were on Nov. 21, 1969. The building is expected to be completed by fall, 1971. During dedication ceremonies the new Sci- ence Hall will be formally named the Hunt- Haught Science Hall in honor of two recently retired members of the FSC staff. These are Dr. George R. Hunt, who joined the college staff as a member of the biology department in 1931 and retired in 1 965; and Cleo D. Haught, who came to the college in 1925 in the chemistry department and retired in 1966. Garden Lanes Apart- ment G contains thirty-five units and houses 140 girls. The building is owned by Dale-Howe Management Corporation and supervised by the college. Construction began in the spring and continued throughout the summer.  —  -? ' Garden Lanes Apartment G 79 1 Winter on Campus Fairmont State College students returned in January after a three week vacation to find the campus covered with snow. The school calendar had been changed so that final examinations were scheduled before Christmas.
