We Came To Search, To Emulate, To Perfect, But Most of Ail We Came Because We Desired To Become Something a Little Better Than Our Past. We Came To Progress. i t R i j 3 1 — ml i V ! • - As a Child, We Took Our First Step . . . Stepping High, Stepping Forward, We Attempted To Grasp, To Correlate, To Comprehend. Sometimes the Massive Weight of Knowledge Pressed Upon Us Until We Thought We Were Being Crushed. And Then . . . In This Moment of Hush, the Pieces Began To Fuse Together — We Suddenly Understood — We Knew. And for a Brief Interim, We Were at Peace With Ourselves. But Only for a Moment; j ' Y ' ' ' . ! ' ' ■ ' ■ ' j H SKI 9 ft f : • • Four years ago, the class of 1966 arrived on campus to be greeted by the sight of progress. A progress that has continued as we have kept stride. As we leave, our undergraduate education completed, we see two new dormitories com- pleted, a beautiful fine arts building and cafete- ria nearly completed, and plans finished for continued expansion of Fairmont State College. But the work is not yet finished, for a college must constantly grow and expand. Our College is doing just this. We, the 1966 MOUND staff, dedicate this yearbook not to just one person, but to all of those who have helped to make this campus the living monument which has arisen from their faith in the school, its administration, and above all, its students. !■« W. Falcons Race To Best Record in Years, 8-1 Season A corps of remarkable seniors and a bevy of talented underclass- men led the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons to the best record they have put away since 1959 — a fine 8-1 record. The highlight of the conference season for the Falcons was a hard fought victory over West Virginia Tech. Butch Clayton and a strong de- fense were too much for Tech as they succumbed 14-13, due to miss- ing an extra point. Winning the game awarded Fairmont the confer- ence championship for the second consecutive year. In a non-conference game the following week, which was Home- coming, Fairmont was matched against a vaunted Bethany team. Bethany had handed the Falcons their only defeat during the previ- ous season. An eager, aggressive, Falcon eleven took the field seeking to wipe the blot from their record and to do some blotting in return. After the kickoff, Bethany was never in the game. Fairmont annihil- ated the Bisons with a nine touchdown attack and a ferocious defense which stymied the scoring efforts of Bethany. The game was a re- markable display of cooperation and teamwork as eight players scored for Fairmont. George Clayton was tremendous! Butch threw five touchdown pass- es and scored one touchdown himself as he turned in the finest per- formance of his career. Besides passing for 289 yards, Butch ran for another 100 yards. The aggressive defense held the Bethany offense to 164 yards by intercepting fives passes and stifling the Bison ' s ground attack. Two of these interceptions were turned into Fairmont scores by the alert defenders. A sad and surprised Bethany crew returned home with a 59-6 shel- lacking on their otherwise perfect record. The following week the Falcon ' s played their final regular season game against West Liberty, an ever dangerous opponent. However, the Fairmont attack continued to move and the Hilltoppers were defeated 35-6. The fighting Falcons represented Fairmont State College in the post season NAIA playoff game at Minneapolis. In bone-chilling weather and on a frozen field, the Falcons were defeated 28-7. Although they played hard and well, the Falcons were unable to overcome the frigid weather and a tough St. John ' s team. Even though such senior stalwarts as Louis Ribel, George Clayton, Roy Jackson, Ron Gregan, and others will be missed, they are leaving behind them a solid core around which to build next year ' s Fighting Falcons. As a team, their record stands witness. With the help of Clayton and Jackson, Ellsworth picks up yardage. Mayle gets set for the tackle. Other Falcons are Martray, Brown, Sloan, Williams, Youngblood, and Ribel. Martin Bartic breaks away from two defenders. Coaches Receive Honors Coach Harold S. Basketball — A Year of Rebuilding The 1965-66 basketball season was one of rebuilding and experimenting for the Falcons. Having only one of the starting five, Dave Miller, back from last season ' s Kansas City team, Coach Retton had to work with un- tried but skillful material. Despite the handicaps that the team faced throughout the year, they achieved an outstanding record of 23-4 of which Fairmont State fans are justly proud. Although the basketballers were eliminated from the WVIAC tournament at Charleston by a strong West Vir- ginia Wesleyan team, the Falcons will all be back next season with a much more wise and experienced team.
