' ■ 7ii ■ Wtf; ■ ,sft . . v ' f V; The 23 by 26-foot, white country school- house was taken down in sections some 20 miles from the campus where it was constructed in 1871, and trucked to the college to be reassembled. Here, it will not only serve as a memorabilia of the early years in rural America, but it will also serve as a visual aid to the many young teachers who are trained on the Fairmont campus each year. Completed as a West Virginia Centennial project, it was a joint effort on the part of the FSC Centennial Committee, the Mar- ion County Centennial Committee, the Industrial Arts students and maintenance units and local truckers. The original idea came from Dean Paul Yost, a former teacher in a one-room school in Morgan county and later a superintendent of schools. As this issue of the MOUND comes from press this spring, hundreds of persons are expected to visit the One-Room School Museum here on campus. It will remain here as a permanent museum and will serve to help commemorate the cen- tennial of the West Virginia Education Association in 1965 . . . and then in 1967 it will be a highlig ' ht in the cen- tennial of Fairmont State College. ■ . It consists of the five student body officers, all class presidents, one member elected by the inter- fraternity council, one member elected by the honorary and professional organizations, one member elected by the non- fraternity group, and one faculty representative appointed by the President of Fairmont State College. One of the principle assignments of the Student Council is to meet at the beginning of each semester to determine the allo- cations of the student activity funds among the various campus activities and organizations. The budgets prepared are then published so that all students may know for what purposes their fees are being used. The subjects studied include biology, English, nutrition, physical science, psy- chology, and sociology. This curriculum is designed to contribute to the general educa- tion of the students and to provide them with a functional knowledge of the basic sciences. The Fairmont General Hospital School of Nursing is approved by the American College of Surgeons and the American Medical Association. They are also expected to be a credit to the school and to themselves in years to come. Students are selected by an impartial council of seven |uniors and sophomores and six faculty members once a year. Those chosen are then listed in Who ' s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities and given certificates on recognition day. FRESHMAN COUNSELORS Freshman counselors ' freshman week is the time of action for the hard working group. Their membership includes the five Student Council elected officers and all past counselors who are in good standing concerning leader- ship, citizenship, and scholarship. Members of the honorary are chosen through their participation and interest in dramatic activities. Die Wissenschaftler is a strictly academic honorary, recognizing no specific discipline. In order to qualify for membership, a student who has completed thirty-two semester hours of college work must maintain an overall three and one-third grade point average and take a fixed majority of his work in academic areas. ALPHA ALPHA ALPHA ALPHA LAMBDA SIGAAA Founded October 22, 1958 by the members of the Business Department and students of Business Adminis- tration, the Alpha Alpha Alpha business honorary was organized to promote interest in the study of business at Fairmont State College, to promote a more cordial and amiable relationship among the members, and to encourage and recognize a high standard of scholar- ship in business subjects. The honorary ' s functions con- sist of dinner meetings at which a member of manage- ment or labor speaks before the group, acquainting the student with the type of people he will be working with in the future and creates a better relationship be- tween the college and business students and leaders of management and labor throughout the area. The Lettermen ' s Club, Alpha Lambda Sigma, was origi- nated in 1930. The constitution was revised in 1956 to include members of all intercollegiate athletics. The coaches of each sport will decide on who a letterman will be. In major sports the participant must appear in half of the contest to qualify as a letterman. In individual sports the participant must earn a set number of points to qualify. Faculty advisor is Deacon Duvall. EPSILON PI TAU INDUSTRIAL ARTS CLUB Epsilon Pi Tau, an Industrial Arts and Industrial Voca- tional Education International Honorary Society organized in 1920, was installed as Alpha Upsilon chapter at Fair- mont State College in 1955 by its Founder, Dr. William E. Warner. Epsilon Pi Tau is strictly a professional organi- zation with membership limited by grades, (B average) character, and promise of professional growth. All mem- bers are responsible for one meeting, expected to attend state meetings and are hosts to a state meeting. Its purpose is the professional development of promising young leaders in Industrial Arts and Industrial Vocational Education. About one half of its members enter the teach- ing field. The Industrial Arts Club, a local organization with national affiliation through the American Vocational Association, had its beginning at Fairmont State College in 1948 with a membership of twenty-three World War II veterans. The club ' s main function is to develop attributes of the Industrial Arts technology beyond class activities, and bring together those involved in Industrial Arts education, and their ideals and philosophies. All majors and minors of Industrial Arts Technology are eligible for membership. INDUSTRIAL ARTS CLUB, ROW 1: C. W. The philosophy of the college is that adequate preparation for teaching requires rich and comprehensive experiences in that area of general education, a reasonable degree of concentration in the subject matter fields, and the development of certain attitudes, skills, and understandings which characterize effective teaching. Student teaching is required in all curriculum at the present time. (A, C and non- academic) Student teaching is required in all curricula. One semester of the senior year is used to schedule a block of approximately 15 semester hours of professional courses. Seven of the 15 semester hours are devoted to student teaching. The student does practice teaching in his major and minor areas of concen- tration. The directed teaching is a daily assignment for a full day, five days a week, for approximately 9 weeks. The stu- dent teacher is expected to assume other duties of supervising teachers. TAU BETA IOTA FRATERNITY Thirty-six years ago an organization of upstanding young men was granted a charter by Fairmont State Normal School. Dr. Rosier, seeing the fine qualities of the fraternal organization, granted this charter on the seventh day of March, 1926 — thus establishing the first fraternity on the campus. The Greek name given to this fraternity was Tau Beta lota, better known as T.B.I. As one of the leaders on the hill, the T.B.I, fraternity has had a prosperous year. The members won first place in the annual Inter-Panhellenic Song Fest by singing Black is the color of my True Love ' s Hair, and also won first place in the men ' s division in the Homecoming float competition with the theme Tech ' s Day of Reckoning. The T.B.I. ' s also claim a student body officer and a member who was selected to Who ' s Who Among Students in American Col- leges and Universities. Other activities of the fraternity include the Harvest Ball, Sweetheart Ball and spring formal.
