THAT HE MAY LIVE We, the brothers of William H. Burnett, Jr., known affectionately as Gork or Horky, dedicate this to the memory of our departed brother. Gork leaves a fine record at the college on the hill. He was on the wrestling team for two years, and he placed in a two way tie for the Outstand- ing Freshman honors for his achievements. True and loyal to his friends and brothers, he will long be remembered, and until we meet again and stand together in brotherhood, we will sing, One in devotion, One in desire, . . . and we will say, Our Father, Which are in Heaven, . . . 41 v ' JUNIORS JUNIORS Judith Lynn Arnett, Fairmont, W. NURSES For several years the Fairmont General Hospital School of Nursing has maintained an affiliation with Fairmont State College. Presently, first year students of the School of Nursing complete two semesters at the college — a major part of the preclinical pro- gram. The subjects studied include biology, English, nutrition, physical science, psychol- ogy, and sociology. This curriculum is designed to contribute effectually to the general education of the students and to provide them with a functional knowledge of the basic sciences. The Fairmont General Hospital School of Nursing is approved by the American College of Surgeons and the American Medical Association. It is also accredited by the West Virginia State Board of Examiners for Registered Nurses and the National League for Nursing 51 1 f Llf 1 7 Q ill t«  v.-. x r:- ' - 1 -■■.-: UNDERCLASSMEN Corolyn Ruth Bartlett, Grafton, W. In early March of 1961, representatives of Sigma Pi National Frater- nity of the United States visited the campus of several West Virginia schools in hopes of initiating the first colony in this state. Leading independents in the personnages of John Frye, Eugene Walter, and Raymond Shadis were contacted and the base for a colony at Fairmont State was laid. A nucleus of men interested in a new type of fraternity gathered and held meetings long into the night to discuss its aims and principles. The aims evolved were to build a social brotherhood based on voluntary unity and personal freedom from pressure to conform to any social, political, or scho- lastic image or boundries except those cast by the basic principles of the group. Those principles are the following: To seek maturity, that is, to live by love, reason, and faith, and to show respect for the lives, aims, and rights of others. To seek honesty with ourselves and with others,- to neither embellish nor to restrict the truth so as to divert its potential, and to establish license for the expression of opinions within the group. — To seek humility, indiscri- mination, and justice in dealing with persons, ideas, or material subjects which are new, or which we do not fully understand. The Fairmont colony of Sigma Pi became a reality on April 13, 1961, when thirteen men were formally pledged. This was followed by a series of social and expansion activities which climaxed with the initiation of the first six brothers of Sigma Pi at Fairmont State in ceremonies held at Drexel Institute, Philadelphia. This was followed by a semester of full activity, high- lighted by several social and money-raising events and a spirited drive to put into practice our aims and principles. Sigma Pi National Fraternity was founded at Vincennes University in 1897, making it the oldest fraternity founded west of the Allegheny Mountains. Sigma Pi now boasts chapters at seventy-three of the finest universities and colleges in the United States. 139 SIGMA TAU GAMMA FRATERNITY XI CHAPTER Bob Donley Jerry Hobbs Charles Fortney Ronald Jones Lowell Gray Carl Moser Ronald Baker Charles Berry Bennie Bortle Danny Brown Stan Burnett Sigma Tau Gamma was born of the desires and cooperation of a few men who were attending the summer session of Central Missouri State College in 1920. On June 28, 1920, a larger group was called together to discuss the formation of the fraternity. Further progress was unin- terrupted and June 28 is accepted as the date of founding. The active members and several alumni of Kappa Psi Xi, a local fra- ternity at Fairmont State College became Xi chapter on March 23, 1929. The Greek name given to this fraternity was Tau Beta Iota, better known as T.B.I. Tau Beta lota was organized for the purpose of creating school spirit and for bringing together fel- lows in the school to uplift the social activities of Fairmont State Normal School. Always true-blue to our school was the motto. It is also the aim of TBI to create a better understanding ' between the faculty and the students.
