LEBO, Advisor MICHAEL ROMINO, Photographer KATHY O ' CONNOR, Art Editor 1961 DEAN GEORGE R. HUNT 3lt 95V Z e Uc t£o4i College is an emotional, social, and academic renaissance for young people of our time. We find it challenging, frustrating, and exhilarating depending upon our attitudes and efforts, but primarily upon the inspiration which it provides. Upon becoming oriented to the traditions and opportunities which are so much a part of Fairmont State College, one becomes increasingly aware that he is constantly seeking inspiration from his associates, from his experiences, and from those people who are so acutely responsible for the edification and growth of his curriculum. Inspiration, an intangible and elusive force for all of us, is most often found and most effectively evidenced in the behavior and attitudes of persons whom we admire. The challenging and far-reaching influence of Fairmont State College is easily en- visioned in the personage of one of the school ' s most gracious, learned, and respected educators — Dean George R. Hunt. In much the same manner that the institution which we love provides security and inspiration for our futures, our academic dean enhances that institution and thus the planning of our lives, with quality in thinking, stability of character, and a truly inspirational attitude toward life ' s most important decisions and activities. Known as a man with an understanding personality and highest principles, he is a stronghold in the school to which he has contributed many years, many ideas, and many far-reaching plans and decisions. The site of our college on the hill has been the spark of song, story, and the realization in the minds of many that college is, in truth, a quest for the highest quality of knowledge and growth. In recognition of the prestige, forthrightness and honest interest he has conscientiously exhibited and because he, like Fairmont State College holds a high place in the hearts of the students, we dedicate the 1961 edition of THE MOUND to our academic dean, George R. Hunt. FAIRMONT COLLEGE LIBRARY 50660 PRESIDENT ESTON K. FEASTER, Ed.D. It is a pleasure to recommend the 1961 issue of THE MOUND to the students, faculty, alumni, and friends of Fairmont State College. It includes representative activities of the academic, cultural, and social aspects of the college community. In this respect, it tends to perpetuate, for years to come, many bf the interesting and exciting experiences as well as the traditions of the Friendly College. I commend the editorial staff and the students for making this worthwhile contribution to the overall program of the college. Eston K. Feaster GEORGE R. Ray worked dili- gently during his term and bolstered the morale and prestige of the organization. Elections were held on April 26, 1960 and the new officers were: Terry Silk, Pres- ident; Dottie Marsh, Vice President; Jeanne Hymes, Secretary; Mike Polednak, Treas- urer; and Gene Walter, Sgt.-at-Arms. On the first week of May it was decided that the Independents should become the Organized Independents and adopt the name Centurions — men of loyalty and leadership who were captains of the Roman army. On December 5, 1960 a new president, John Frye, was appointed by Terry Silk, who resigned. This gave John a double responsibility — president and the student council representative for the Independents on campus. In one year the Centurions have grown from an organization of 25 to one of 52 members plus two advisors, Wesley Ryals and J. Bradley Smoker. The Centurions also built a float for the ' 60 Homecoming parade. The theme— BLAST ' EM, FAL- CONS! et SEATED: Margaret Yambor, Paul Pitrolo, Rose Moran. We congratulate the football squad on its outstanding 1960 season. This year, with a record of eight wins and one loss, the Falcons are distinguished and honored for winning the first West Virginia Bowl Conference. In the past decade the Falcons have had a remarkable record with sixty-three wins, twenty-one losses, and one tie. We also congratulate Coach Harold S. Deacon Duvall. Since 1952, when he came to Fairmont State, Deacon has had fifty-five wins, fifteen losses, and one tie. Coach Duvall has also led the team to four Conference Championships and one bowl title. In the last two years, Coach Duvall has received much assistance from Mr. Wil- liam Floyd. Mr. Floyd is a graduate of Ohio State University. We thank you, Coaches Duvall and Floyd and the football team, for a job well done and we ask you to keep up the good work. We wish you much luck in the future. 164 ' COACH ' -DEACON DUVALL COACH WILLIAM FLOYD STUDENT COACH JOE BUNDY dfatotuatcHty Se uo 4 Sept. 17 FSC— Shepherd 13 Fairmont State College once again enjoyed a highly successful football campaign under the coaching of Har- old Deacon Duval and his staff, and through the de- termined efforts of a fighting Falcon team. Shepherd quickly displayed their fine backfield run- ning with an 81 yard touchdown run. Roy Meeks drove over to put Fairmont back in the game and the Falcons led 7-6 at halftime. After another long Shepherd scoring run, Marty DeMoss provided the Falcons with a hard earned victory with his 4 yard plunge and conversion. Sept. 24 FSC 19— Davis-Elkins Fairmont blanked the Senators with a fine team ef- fort. George Stimmel scored first from 2 yards out. Quarterback Kent Malloy opened up the Fairmont aerial attack with a 20 yard touchdown pass to Jim Shaner. In the final quarter Mo Kaline pulled in another fine Malloy strike to end the scoring. Oct. 1 FSC 33— West Virginia Wesleyan After a very hard-fought first half of play the Falcon scoring threat became a reality with 27 points in the sec- ond half. Jim Shaner opened the scoring barrage smash- ing over from 11 yards out. The defensive unit put on a show of alertness and savvy when Gene Perkins inter- cepted a Wesleyan pass and scampered 45 yards to pay dirt. Gorden Rennie duplicated on an intercepted pitch- out and it was a rout. The scoring parade ended as Bob Newbrough bulled through for a touchdown. Oct. 8 FSC 7— Concord 20 Concord came to town with a very rugged upset-minded squad which succeeded in handing the Falcons their only setback of the season. Behind 14-0 at halftime, Fairmont never quite got their attack going. George Stimmel scored the lone Falcon touchdown in the closing minutes of the game. tytfuUcatttty, Se Uo t Oct. 15 FSC 2£— Salem 12 Salem enjoyed an early lead but Fairmont was to re : gain their winning ways. Trailing in the final period of play, Falcon standout Gene Beasley turned in the spar- kling performance as he stormed over from 16 yards out and followed up with a pass interception good for an- other touchdown. Fairmont ' s stout defensive unit held on for a well-earned victory. Oct. 22 FSC 21— West Virginia Tech 12 Tech jumped off to an early 12-0 lead and it looked like a long night ahead for the. Falcons. However Marty DeMoss and George Stimmel put new life in the Fair- mont attack as they scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards to set up a 14-12 halftime lead. Reliable George Stimmel drove through for the winning touchdown as the Falcons once again staged a 4th quarter rally. Oct. 29 FSC 7— Glenville With the conference championship up for grabs this game turned into a real defensive battle. Living up to their title Hercules Hardheads, the Falcon defensive unit played rugged football and waited for a scoring break. It came in the final period when Bob Newbrough bucked through from the 3 for the game ' s only touch- down. Nov. 12 FSC 13— West Liberty Before a large Homecoming crowd Fairmont played inspired ball defeating West Liberty and wrapping up another West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Confer- ence Championship. Mo Kalin and Gene Beasley teamed up to give the Falcons the necessary scoring punch . Nov. 24 FSC 13— Salem 7 Fairmont State College became the first West Vir- ginia Bowl winner by edging Salem in a real hard- fought contest. The Falcons dominated play throughout the first half and took a 6-0 halftime lead on the strength of Roy Meeks ' touchdown. Jim Shaner added another Fairmont tally in the 3rd stanza on the five yard run. Salem gave the Falcon pass defense one of the stiffest tests of the season as they took to the air with a torrid passing attack, only to be halted with timely interceptions by Gene Beasley and Roy Meeks. Roy Meeks was voted the game ' s outstanding player. Bowl Game Actioi GEORGE STIMMEL BUD BICKEL BILL STALNAKER COACH DUVALL COACH H. S. LEBO Accomplishment, gracefulness, and happiness seem all to be found only in the art of giving. Since true appreciation is an adult way of thinking, few of us realize the educational value of guidance associations until we are college men and women with adult needs and adult responsibilities. Although many satisfying instructor-student associations are built and maintained during our four years of collegiate endeavor, many of us experience a sense of su- preme inspiration through those instructors who are our directors of learning and our mutual participants in continuing projects for the social and academic improve- ment and prestige for which Fairmont State College is noted. We feel that the recent intense and highly successful program for the physical and cultural improvement is unprecedented in this school ' s history. Much of our success in communicating and preserving its purpose, events, and credits must be accredited to the tactful guidance and generous personality of our former advisor, Mrs. Joanne Lebo. A young woman of exceptional ability for clear instruction, variety in writing technique, and thoroughness and enthusiasm for every journalistic and cultural proj- ect, Mrs. Lebo is remembered and admired by the Staff of the 1961 Mound for her accomplishment as a most successful teacher and friend, her gracefulness as a person and public representative of our school, and for the optimistic personality which has contributed so much to the happiness of her students — for her mastery of the art of giving. 7 UcuuC Sta$ SEATED: Lois Muto, Pat Griffin. Helen Logsdon, Rachel Whoolery, Carolyn Conrad, Mary Joan Howes. STANDING: Kathy O ' Connor, Pete Albero, Gus Palumbo, William Mitchell, George Lomas, Charles Vincent, Dick Clelland, Frank Berarducci; Dorothy Meisel, Advisor. We, the members of the 1961 MOUND Staff, have worked earnestly, hoping to create a memorable record to help you re-live the challenges, accomplishments, and friendships acquired during the 1960-1961 school year. This would not be possible if it were not for the help of all those who are a part of Fairmont State. We sincerely hope our efforts were worthwhile. We would like, especially, to thank the following persons for their generous con- tributions to the 1961 MOUND: Suzanne Thralls, Mr. Fred Schroeder, Mrs. Joanne Lebo, Mrs. Dorothy Meisel, Dean Turley, Al Ludwick, and our advertisers.
