The 7 960 Mound is dedicated to the memory of Dr. John W. Pence, President of Fairmont State College. All who knew him felt the tremendous loss when learning of his death on Wednesday, November 25, 1959. If the college has earned the reputation of being friendly, it is no more than a reflection of the man who influenced it for thirty-three years, as teacher, Dean of Men, Dean of the College, Acting Presi- dent, and since 1952, as President. A conscientious scholar, he strove for high standards of instruction and scholarship on the campus. As a broad-visioned administrator, he was diligent in working for the steady growth of the college. But it is as an unconscious model for one and all that his influence will go furthest through the years. Dr. Pence was an unassuming man, of deep personal modesty — his concern was for others. His un- failing courtesy was based on intrinsic kindness. Firm in guidance, patient, and calm, he was able to draw the best from others. Dr. Pence was approachable and had time for everyone; teacher, student or campus employee could be assured that his smile and personal greeting sprang from a sincere liking and interest. Fairmont State College, which has had the benefit of this leader ' s lifetime of service, is a different kind of school because it has been influenced by the guidance of Dr. John W. Pence.
