19% Wheels, as a symbol of forward movement, is this year ' s theme for the Mound representing the progress of our college and all the parts that keep it running. There are many differ- ent wheels, but regardless of their size or kind, they j are all related to work to- j gether for general ad- vancement. ?aOimo tt State @oMeyc ■fog , .KSMs - ■;■■■. PENCE As the spokes of a wheel center around the axle, the departments of Fairmont State College revolve around its President, John Wesley Pence. President Pence has served in this capacity since 1952. His associa- tion with- the college dates back to 1926 when he served as instructor in Political Science and Economics. He held the position of Dean of Men from 1928 to 1946. He served as acting president during 1947- 1948 while President Joseph Rosier was serving in the United States Senate. He became Dean of the College in 1947 and held that position until 1952 when he was appointed President. Because of his untiring efforts we heartily acknowledge President Pence for the growth of the school. h t r M m Sitting left to nght-Ot.s H. ' Kaftfia Siymti ' Kaftfra The most progressive fraternity on the Hill The Kappa Sigma Kappa fraternity is very old as it had its start in Virginia in 1867. In 1945 the local Omicron Pi fraternity on the Hill became affiliated with and became the Kappa Sigma Kappa fraternity which is both national and international in nature. As our slogan says, we are growing both in membership and in activities. The Christ- mas party for the children of the Children ' s Shelter is an annual affair that we try to carry out in order to help someone. The children enjoyed the party very much as did the mem- bers. The fraternity tries to stress help instead of the traditional hazing. This year we have had an informal dance, falconites, smokers, parties, informal and formal initiations and the annual Colonial Ball and spring formal. ' paOwuMt State @oMeye cutd The Fairmont State College Band, under the direction of Mr. Richard A. Montague, is one that the school can be proud of. It is a maroon-uniformed band of approximately fifty pieces. Rehearsals are held three days a week. The band opened the year by marching in the annual Forest Festival in October at Elkins; played for all home football games; and led the Dad ' s Day Parade, putting on a band show with the theme Special Days at halftime of the game. During basketball season, a small pep band was formed to play at some of the games. The whole band participated in the Homecoming game, February 18. Springtime brought the annual tour to several high schools in this part of West Virginia, the spring concert, a performance for the Principals Association in March, and other appearances. Once each semester a party was held with educational and entertaining films shown, games, dancing, and refreshments. The president of the band is Jane White and the majorettes are: Marlene Winemiller, Doris Watson, Letha Harbert, Barbara Watson, Nancy Belt, Sandra Cutlip, Sally Porter, and Patti Osborne. The Fairmont State College choir under the direction of Mr. John T. Evans and ac- companied by Mrs. Norma Donham, can be heard practicing three days a week. The music employed by the choir is not of the elementary type, and consequently, there is much to be derived from it, not only for the participants but also for the listener. The choir members have performed for many audiences. They presented a Christmas Cantata in our college auditorium for an as- sembly. Their next appearance was at the Rotary Club followed by a concert tour of different high schools in this district. They also gave a spring concert and completed the year by singing for commencement. The local radio station closes each day of broadcasting with the Battle Hymn of the Republic by the F. S. C. College Choir. By taking part in varied activities, the choir plays a tremendous part in making Fairmont State College a school of public note and interest.
