rMim ruin on Presentation . . In The Encyclopedia we read: The unchangeable, harmonious course of the heavenly bodies, the profound impression made on the soul of man by the power of such heavenly phenomena as eclipses, the feeling of dependence on the sun, the giver of daylight — all these probably suggested, in the early ages of the human race, the guestion whether the fate of man was not dependent on these majestic manifestations of Divine power .... According to the belief of the early civilized races of the East, the stars were the source and at the same time the heralds of everything that happened .... This was the case in Mesopotamia and Egypt .... The most ancient dwellers on the Euphrates were believers in judicial astrology which was closely interwoven with their worship of the stars. The same is true of their successors, the Babylonians and Assyrians, who were the chief exponents of astrology in antiguity .... The Egyptians developed astrology to a condition from which it varies but little today. The following excerpt is of interest concerning the spread of astrology into the West: The lower the Romans sank in religion and morals the more as- trology became entwined with all action and belief .... As Christianity spread, the astrologers lost their influence and reputation and generally sank to the position of mere guacks. With astrology as a science of divination and all of its conseguent fatalistic implications, this book has no concern. The use of zodiacal signs in this book is in no sense to be taken as implying or affirming a belief in judicial astrology. The 1941 MOUND reguired a theme to express with some continuity the pas- sage of time. The conventional signs of astrology were found to meet that need, and to possess, also, an easy adaptability to other features of this annual. These signs, then, are here used merely as a decorative theme that fits in well with the chronological order of this book and with the plan in which it was con- ceived and developed. — Robert Soles. Ex Libris THE 1941 M Editor ROBERT SOLES Business Manager FRANKIE JANE SNYDER THE ANNUAL PUBLICATION of the STUDENTS OF FAIRMONT STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE m OUND FAIRMONT STATE COLLEGE LIBRARY bedicatwst JASPER HAYMOND COLEBANK Born under the sign of the Pisces, Jasper Haymond Colebank, director of athletics and physical education for men, and coach from 1924 until he resigned in 1940, has been looked upon with favor by his stars. Much of moment has happened to him and he has well fulfilled that which his stars would lead us to expect of him. Honor and respect in his chosen field have fallen upon him. For his quiet, winning qualities, for his generosity, for the faithfulness with which he has fulfilled the wishes of his stars, and most of all, for his strength of character, we dedicate this book to Jasper Haymond Colebank, a man who understands the puzzling con- stellations of a collegiate heaven. JASPER HAYMOND COLEBANK 22774G We feel proud of Fairmont State Teachers College today. It stands on its knoll and provides training which better fits us to work in and for society. However, if we look at its past record we may feel just a little more proud. The present college was one of the first established as a private institution in 1865 to meet the de- mand for competent and efficient teachers in the free schools. Ad- vancement has been steady from the time of the first meeting in the basement of a church to our pres- ent standing. Our school has had three homes of its own; first, at the corner of Quincy and Adams Streets; second, on Fairmont Ave- nue; and now on the hill. From a student body of seventy- five in 1872 we have grown to an enrollment of over seven hundred. We have advanced from a high school standing to a college rat- ing. In 1905, our Teacher ' s Train- ing Department was added. It was in 1923, when we offered our first A.B. degree in Education, that we finally achieved a rating as a first class college. From this time only two courses. The College and The Standard Normal, have been of- fered. Throughout this time the school has had the aim of preparing teachers so that education in West Virginia may be improved to the greatest possible extent. DR. JOSEPH ROSIER ' The destiny and character of that individual who is born on January 24th is guided by the sign of Aguarius so predicts the astrologer as he examines his map of the heavens to cast the horoscope of the president of Fairmont State Teachers College, Dr. Joseph Rosier, who, on May 14th became the Junior United States Senator from West Virginia. You are an intellectual leader, for you are gifted with high intelligence, forceful reasoning power, and singular clarity of vision. President Rosier ' s capable planning and guidance of our curriculum, which have placed Fairmont State Teachers College high in the rank of Teachers ' Col- leges, verify such prediction. The efficiency and fairness of his administrative policies have won for him our highest loyalty and support. You are inclined to be unconventional and accept everything at its human value. You are honest, sincere and reliable and have a clear conception of the road ahead of you. The remarkable intuition of this astrologer is continu- ously manifested by the kind smile of greeting and the sin- cere words of interest and helpfulness which President Rosier offers to each of us. A preeminent figure on the campus, on the speaking rostrum, and in the ranks of great educators is Dr. Joseph Rosier. John Wesley Pence Dean of Men Glenn Arnett Laura Briggs B. B. ZINN JUNIORS One year, two years have passed by — the third year passing by. It sounds like a story. And that is what it is; a thrilling episodic narrative. Three years that have slipped by so guickly that, now, it almost seems unbelieveable. In September, 1938, we, a crowd of green freshies, drifted through the halls, at every second learning something new about the school we had chosen. That year we had a dinner dance, we displayed our talents in a special Chapel program, and we appeared on a Campus Highlights program. Proclaimed as Sophomores in 1939, we, as a group, automatically accepted our, supposedly, more advanced level. In November we made all the neces- sary arrangements for one of the most spectacular days of the year — Dad ' s Day. The events of that day might be segregated into three parts, (1) the parade, consisting of many floats and the college band, (2) the football game, and (3) the dance. All of which was under our jurisdiction, and in honor of the Dads of the students. And then came the fall of 1940. We were, at last, full fledged Juniors — upperclassmen. Nov our lives were our own. As in former years we met and organized our class. The officers elected were: Robert Robey, President; Mary Alice LeVelle, Vice-President; Kathryn Bradley, Secretary-Treasurer. The highlight for the year was the Junior Prom held in the Fairmont Hotel on Wednesday, April 23. It was a gala affair in which Mary Alice LeVelle was crowned Queen; and Jeannette Sturm acted as Maid of Honor. With the closing of the semester the Junior class leaves saying, So long, we ' ll be seeing you next fall. ATHLETICS Jasper Haymond Colebank Wilford Wilson WILFORD (SQUIBB) WILSON, Fairmont State ' 35, took over the coaching job of his alma mater on Friday, September 13, succeeding Jasper Haymond Colebank, who became athletic director after serving for 16 years in the position of head coach. VARSITY FOOTBALL Despite a flock of injuries the 1940 football season was one of the best on the records of the Maroon and White as they won three games, lost four, and tied one. The opening game was against West Liberty and found the Teachers finishing on the short end of a 39 to score. The first home game ended in a 6-6 tie with New River furnishing the opposition. On October 12 the Teachers Traveled to California, Pa., and won their first game of the year 12 to 0. Shepherd upset the Fairmont machine 7 to 6 in a game played at Shepherdstown on October 19, and on October 25 the Teachers tripped Salem 14 to 7 in the annual Dad ' s Day game. The next two games found the Teachers losing two games, to Glenville 20-12, and to Concord 18 to 6. The former was played at Glennville November 2, while the latter took place on Rosier Knob on November 8. In the final game, Fairmont upset Bethany by a 6 to score in a game played in a blinding snowstorm on November 15. With only four veterans returning from the 1939-40 basket- ball squad. Coach Wilson placed a team on the floor that compared with the best of their opponents. During the season Fairmont won 9 games and lost 13, but upset victories were registered over Glenville, Waynesburg, and House of David machines, besides giving stronger quintets a scare before going down to defeat. Victories were registered over Marietta, West Liberty, New River, Davis-Elkins, and Bethany twice, besides the teams mentioned above, while they lost two games to California, Pa., Alderson-Broaddus, Salem and Wesleyan, and singlets to Marietta, Glenville, Waynesburg, West Liberty, and Davis- Elkins. Bob Pence, sophomore, shattered all previous scoring records for one year, at Fairmont state when he looped in a total of 484 points in the 22 games on the card. Coach Wilson SAM (MUSS) Grake, who served very capably in the capacity of Assistant Coach during the 1940 football season and as manager of the 1940-41 basketball team. Sam is a physical education major and has proven quite helpful to the head coach this year. Sam Grake FRANK BELC ASTRO A small but fast player who played practically the entire 1940-41 basketball season in the center slot. Frankie is a sophomore and is expected to be a greater help to the Maroon and White in the next two years than his splendid first two years of college ball. JOHN VICTOR A graduate of Barrackville who had to wait till his Junior year to earn his letter in basketball but showed much promise of developing into a firs class player although he played in the role of substitute during the entire season. Victor played at guard. JOHN TATTA A Junior and one of the four lettermen from the 1939-40 team who was elected to captain the current quintet. Although Tatta was not an ace scorer he was the backbone of the Teachers defense, from his guard position. ROBERT ASHCRAFT A graduate of Shinnston who broke into the Teachers lineup from the very first game. Ashcraft scored a total of 241 points in his freshman year and is looking forward to a banner season during the 1941-42 basketball grind. He fit perfectly into one of the forward posts. ROBERT PENCE Pence continued to burn up the nets with his ability to make points against ail competition. In a Sophomore year that far surpassed his sp lendid first year Bob scored a total of 484 points to set a new high for point making in one year for Fairmont State players. Pence played one of the forward posts. WALTER OWENS Another Sophomore who broke into the starting lineup from the very start of the season and kept going strong until the final whistle was blown to end the season. From his guard spot Owens scored many points by a dribble in shot which he used to a great advantage. JACK COULTER A player who saw considerable service at forward, center, and guard positions and proved quite adaptable in any of the three spots. Jack is a Junior and prepped at Pine Grove high school. CALVIN CONAWAY A Freshman who saw action in every game that the Teachers played last year mostly as a sub center. Cal hails from Barrackville and shows promise of developing into a first class college player. JACK MILLER Jack saw service in only five games this year although he was the regular center from the very start of the season. Miller had started on what looked like a banner year but an eye injury in the sixth game on the slate forced him to retire from action. Miller will be back again next year to perform for the Maroon and White. MITCHELL BODZEK Another player who played in the substitute and was rushed in to fill up the gap when the opponents started to roll in the points and on most occasions filled his job like a veteran. Mitch is a Junior. TENNIS TEAM With only a few veterans returning from the previous years squad the 1940 tennis team had a fairly successful season, winning one and losing four matches. Forrest Reed was top ranking star of the team. Fairmont State college ' s 1940 baseball team was badly hampered by the lack of hurlers but won five and lost eight games during the season. Fairmont State became a member of the newly organized Tri-State league which in- cluded West Liberty and Fairmont from West Virginia, St. Vincent and Indiana from Pennsylvania, and Frostburg from Maryland. Lou Piccola, regular short- stop was the only person which graduated from the 1940 team and prospects are bright for a banner year in 1941.
