1988 Annual Is Dedicated To Willard McNamara This year the students at Fairmont Public School would like to dedicate the annual to Willard McNamara. Mr. McNamara of Casper, Wyoming donated a gift of $4,000 to the school library in memory of his late sister, Jeanette McNamara. Jeanette McNamara was a school teacher for several years while residing in the Fairmont area. When she retired from teaching, she continued to live in Fairmont. According to Willard, Jeanette never lost interest in school or students, especially the different activities in which students participate. It was for this reason that he wanted to make this donation. The gift is being used to purchase a Britannica Encyclopedia set, audio-visual material, library furniture, and a computer for student and librarian use. In the picture, Don Pieper, superintendent of Fairmont Public School, is accepting the check from Mr. McNamara. WEST BROTHERS,INC. It was a risk worth taking when 23 students received a standing ovation on April 29th for their successful performance of “All American.” This was the first time in quite a few years that Fairmont High School has produced a musical. The story centered around Professor Fo- dorski’s (Matt Schepers) arrival in America to teach engineering at S.B.I.T. College. He proceeds to use his teaching to lead the football team to the Cotton Bowl with the help of Bricker the Kicker (Neil Dawson). Along the way they were challenged by Elizabeth (Jane Lowe) and Susan (Marcia Le- fler). The play was co-directed by Cheryl Greger- son, Cheryl Luzum, and Denice Kovanda. All 23 members of the cast can be proud of all that they accomplished. There were many laughs and giggles, some grief, a few tears, and much hard work, long hours, and pride that went into this per- formance. Back How: Eric Schepers, Matt Schepers, Neil Dawson. The 1987 Fairmont Volleyball Sea- son was one of the best ever recorded at Fairmont High School. The girls were able to achieve a 13-7 win-loss record against very good competition. The high- light of the season was a district champi- onship and first ever trip to the State Volleyball Tournament. All seven losses came at the hands of teams who were rat- ed at one time during the season. Some of the bigger wins came against Shickley, the eventual D-l State Champion, in the Fairmont Invitational, and the first wins over Exeter and McCool Junction in sev- eral years, in sub-district action. The Ti- gers beat a scrappy Lewiston team in the District finals to earn the trip to the state tourney. In Lincoln, the Tigers played before a large, enthusiastic crowd at Per- shing Auditorium before dropping a three game marathon to defending state champion and eventual D-l state run- nerup, Paxton. Team accomplishments through the year included a runnerup finish in the McCool Junction Invitational, champi- onship honors at the Fairmont Invita- tional, a third-place finish in the Cross- roads Conference Season, and the first District volleyball championship since 1972. The squad also earned their first ratings appearance at the conclusion of the season by being rated 8th in the Omaha World-Herald and 9th in the Lincoln Journal-Star. Several girls also received individual honors during the year. Raina Pieper — 1st Team All-Conference, 2nd Team Crossroads Conference Tournament, and Honorable Mention All-State; Shaun Deterding — Honorable Mention All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-State; Susan Priefert Honorable Mention All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-State; and Jerri Radke — Honorable Mention All-Conference. With the graduation of only three seniors, and a reserve squad that posted a 8-2 record, the Tigers should be very competitive during the next few volley- ball seasons. The Junior High team pos- ted a 2-3 record and showed promise for the future years. MEL’S TIRE SERVICE MELVIN ACKERMAN OR MAXINE ACKERMAN PHONE 268-2611 516 - 6TH AVE.. The season turned around for Fairmont as the Tigers won their last 5 games posting wins against Palmer. Bradshaw, Rising City, McCool and Hampton. Overall the team showed a lot of poise and their experience paid off in many of these games. The Tiger offense scored 356 points on the season which is a reflection of the skill and experience they possessd. Offensively the Tiger starters in- cluded: Quarterback — Jerry Plambeck, So. The Fairmont Lady Tigers finished their season with a 12-8 record, the 12 wins are the most that any girls team has ever had in our school’s history. Two out of those wins were over teams that had beaten our team previously during the season. Out of eight of our losses, 7 were to state rated teams. Overall, we had a very successful season, which included a 2nd place tro- phy in the Fairmont Holiday Tourney, and a 3rd place trophy in the CRC Tour- ney. As a team, we were very young, hav- ing only one senior, and six out of the re- maining ten athletes were freshman. Tiger Spirit!! The 1987-88 Fairmont Boys Basket- ball team had a very successful year. The seniorless Tigers improved throughout the year and showed a lot of character during the season. Fairmont played an up-tempo style of basketball and were fun to watch play. Fairmont finished the season with a loss to Odell in the district finals to end up with a 15-7 record. Fairmont finished fourth in the tough conference behind Exeter, Polk- Hordville and Hampton. Highlights of the season were defeating Hampton (who went on to win State in D-2) in the conference tournament to earn a spot in the championship game and upsetting 3rd rated Exeter in the sub-district final. Fairmont also finished second in the Holiday Tournament. Letter-Winners: Matt Schepers, Eric Schepers, Jason Harms, Keith Bris- tol, Jerry Plambeck, and Tyler Pieper. Strength The Fairmont girls track team consisted of five Freshmen. Due to youth and lack of depth, the team did not finish very high at meets. Injuries also limited the performances of the girls during the season. The girls put together a good 1600m relay team which placed 3rd at the Conference Meet. Jessica Bettger broke the school record in the 100m high hurdles. Letter winners are Jessica Bettger. Lisa Bures, Deana Deterding and Melissa Stejskal. The Fairmont boys track team worked hard and improved their performances throughout the year. These athletes, consisting of all underclassmen, held their own at meets and finished the season on a strong note — finishing 3rd at the District Track Meet. Eric Schepers broke a school record seven times during the season. He currently holds the school re- cord in the 100, 200, 400, 110 high hurdles, and 300 intermediate hurdles. Eric also set nine meet records during the season. At the Conference track meet , Eric won four events and set two records which earned him the Gayle Arnett Award. This award goes to the out- standing athelte at the meet. Eric Schepers qualified for state in the 110 high hurdles, 300 intermediate hurdles and 400m dash. Eric placed 1st in the 110 high hurdles and 3rd in the 400. Eric’s 110 hurdle time was the 3rd best in all clas- ses.
