Youth and enthusiasm could be two words used to describe the 1986 volleyball season at Fairmont High School. The 19 girls that started practice in Mid-August had one thing on their mind — WIN. Through the up and down season the Ti- gers were able to achieve many of the goals that they set for themselves and their teammates. Un- derclassmen played a large role on the team this year, which has hopefully helped to build a strong program for many years to come. Battling through a tough schedule, the Varsity girls were able to achieve a great deal of success in the 8-10 season. They finished in the upper half of the Crossroads Conference and earned a sec- ond place at their own Fairmont Invitational. Many individual awards were also garnered by some of the athletes. Raina Pieper was selected to the Con- ference Second Team and Class D-1 All-State Honorable Mention. Jerri Radke received All-Con- ference Honorable Mention. With these kinds of performances behind the girls, Fairmont High can hopefully look forward to many good years of volleyball in the near future. It is up to the athletes as far as how much they want to achieve in the next few years. Eat It!!!!! The 1986 Fairmont Tiger Football Team truly went through a Rebuilding Season. Seniors were forced out with in- juries, leaving only two on the team. So- phomores and Freshmen had to shoul- der much of the responsibility. The Tigers posted victories against Marquette and McCool Jet. As always the Crossroads Conference was tough all the way around and although the Ti- gers lost, the rest of the games provided valuable experience. Offensively, star- ters for the Tigers included: Quarterback — Jerry Plambeck, Fr. Running Back — Eric Schepers, So. Running Back — Greg Burback, So. Center — Barry Wettstead, Fr. Fairmont had a tough basketball team even though they ended the season with a 5-13 record. The conference was very good this year. During most of the season six teams in the conference were rat- ed in the state. Out of the 13 losses, 9 of them were to teams which were rated at one time during the season. The Tigers were very com- petitive with most of these rated teams. The Tigers ended their regular season games by winning their last two home games. The Tigers beat Giltner and Milligan. Milligan was rated at the time and they went on and qualified for the State Tournament. The captains for the Tigers were John Block and Tim Wehland. Honors earned dur- ing the season went to Matt Schepers who was named All-Conference Honorable Men- tion. Letter Winners are John Block, Daniel Hall, Mark Hanson, Kendell Verhage, Tim Wehland.
