OaHe of sfPr¥,.n zo-yy scxiccI iwe yi H 7 graduation fo-fz 1986 Annual Is Dedicated to Ethel Tharp Palmer This year the students at Fairmont Public School would like to dedicate the annual to Ethel Tharp Palmer. Ethel Palmer was born October 31, 1885 on a farm east of York. Ethel was educated to the tenth grade at a rural school, which was about all the schooling country students had in those days. In 1905, she married Clarence Palmer and moved with him to a farm a few miles from Fairmont. To this family, three children were born — two girls and one boy. In 1959 they moved into town where Mr. Palmer died in 1968. She lived alone until 1983 when she moved to Fairview Manor. She has one daughter living in Colorado, five grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren. For staying at home enjoyment, she likes doing “anything with a needle” and watching television. Sports are her favorite. She is a fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Denver Broncos and the Chicago Cubs. Mrs. Palmer’s sunny outlook is a trademark around the manor where she feels, “If you can’t see the funny side of things once in a while, life would not be worth living.” HILTYS OF FAIRMONT FAIRMONT, NE 68354 268-2211 l A Blast Into The Past Paul Burback Sheila Bures Sheri Frazier Sue Anne Galusha Sally Hilty Melissa Hurst Shane Jantzi Julie Jennett Charlene Johnson Jackie Metzger Denise Miller P.J. The Crossroads Conference was very even this year with no easy games. The players showed that they had maturity and belief in themselves, in coming from behind late in the games for two critical wins and playing tough to preserve wins in others. The season began when the Tigers went to Hampton. At that point in the season, Hampton and Fairmont were two very evenly matched teams. At halftime the score was 6-6. Hampton went ahead with 3:41 left in the 4th quarter, 19-18. It took the Tigers six plays to go 65 yards to score the go ahead. With 1:40 left, Kendell Verhage scored on a 14 yard run and P. J. O’Connor added the extra point. Fairmont-26, Hampton-19. The next week the Tigers played State-Bound Conference champion, Exeter, at home. The Tigers played tough, but Exeter found their way to win, 20-6. The next week the Tigers defeated an inspired Benedict team 13-6. Defense was the key to this game as it was all season. The next game at Giltner is very hard to explain. As long as I have associated with high school sports, as a player and a coach, I have never experienced what I did at Giltner. I think everyone that went to that game came away with a lot of respect for the Fairmont Football team, even though it was a loss. The Fairmont team was more intense than anyone had ever seen them. In the first half. The Fairmont defense played outstanding. They dominated unbeaten Giltner and shut them out. The offense moved the ball and had one touchdown called back. In the 3rd quarter, Giltner scored 14 points. Many teams would have settled for playing close but not the Tigers. They also scored 14 points in the 4th quarter to tie. The extra point that would put the Tigers ahead was called back. That call will remain with the team and coaches as long as they live. Giltner went on to win in overtime, but in our minds Fairmont went down to play, to win, and that is what they did. Fairmont went on to win two other games and played excellent ball. Post-season honors went to Shane Jantzi, P. J. O’Connor, John Block, and Tim Wehland. We also had excellent play from Kendell Verhage, Paul Burback, and Danny Scheil. Three Freshmen, Greg Burback, Eric Schepers, and Matt Schepers added a tremendous amount to the team. Defense was the key to the Tiger Season and a lot of the credit must go to Joe Moylan who orchestrated that defense. Also a special thanks to those that scouted, kept stats, kept the clock — all those things that are necessary to have a successful year. And that is what it was — A SUCCESSFUL YEAR. GOOD JOB! The reserve squad ended the year with a record of five wins and five losses. Throughout the fall, the junior varsity team showed considerable improvement and the desire to win. The varsity girls accomplished a much higher goal. The 1985 campaign ended with Fairmont owning the first varsity volleyball winning record since 1972. They ended the season with ten wins and seven losses. Many team goals were reached along the way as well. Starting off the season with a win on the road against Hampton was a big lift. On the following day, the Tigers were able to claim runner-up position in a six team McCool Jet. Tournament, losing in the finals to a tough Exeter squad. Another bright spot for the girls was the middle of the season Crossroads Conference Tourney played at Fairmont. After knocking off a tough Marquette team in the first round 15-11,8-15,19-17, Fairmont once again ran into Exeter, losing 13-15,15-0,15-6. The Tigers came back the following night to beat Hampton to claim third place in the CRC Tourney. Fairmont got into an end-of-the-year slump, losing their final three games. The last being the fourth loss of the year to Exeter 15-9,15-11 in the first round of the sub- district. Many individual honors were won by this years team members. First team CRC Tourney members were Julie Jennett and Sheri Frazier. Second team members were Jacque Metzger and Melissa Hurst. First team All-Confer- ence honors went to Julie Jennett; Second team All- Conference, Sheri Frazier; Honorable mention All-Confer- ence, Jacque Metzger. Julie Jennett also received All-State Honorable mention honors in Class D-l. Go get them. Along with having a new coach and learning his system, Fairmont played a number of rated teams and played most of their games on the road. The Tigers improved throughout the year and were very competitive the last part of the season. In three of the last four games, Fairmont upset Polk, lost by three to Milligan on their home court, and played a tough game against Exeter in the opening round of Sub-District play. Milligan and Polk went to State in Class D-2 and Exeter became the Class D-l champions. Honors earned during the season went to senior P.J. O’Connor who was named All-Conference Honorable Mention. The Fairmont High School Girls Basketball team got off to a rather slow start at the beginning of the 1985-86 season. While winning only one of their first six games, the team maintained a positive, hard working attitude. The Tigers then turned around and won eight of their last eleven, posting a 9-8 record — their best in years. The highlight of the year was defeating the Shickley Longhorns in the first round of the Sub-District Tournament. Players receiving individual honors during the season were: Julie Jennett, 1st team All- Conference, World Herald Honorable Mention, Lincoln Journal-Star Honorable Mention, and voted team’s Most Valuable Player; Sheri Frazier, 2nd team All-Conference and received team’s hustle award; Raina Pieper, All-Conference Hon- orable Mention; Sue Priefert, voted team’s most improved player. With an increase of athletes out for track compared to recent years, the Fairmont boys’ and girls’ track season went very well. The boys had a young team with twelve underclassmen and the girls also had a young team with eight out of ten underclassmen. Fairmont held their own at track meets with the boys winning Del Wicks Invitation- al at Deshler. The boys and girls gained a lot of experience and things look good for next year.
