Rising City 40-30 Hampton 57-20 The American Legion Marquette 24-40 Post 21 Bradshaw 26- 0 Fairmont, Nebr. Giltner 0-32 McCool Jet 28-12 Benedict 40-47 Fairmont ended with a 6-3 record in a new. tough Crossroads Conference, show- ing great improvement over last year Fairmont travelled to Silver Creek for it's first game and won 19-0. The Tigers began rolling and won their next three in a row before they came against Marquette. Marquette defeated the Tigers by 16. but went on to win the state championship in class D-2. The Tigers defeated Bradshaw the next week and came against a tough Giltner team. They lost to a fine team that lost only to Marquette Coming back to defeat a good McCool Jet team 28-12. the Tigers dominated the entire game. The final game came against play-off bound Benedict and was a thriller. 87 points were scored by the two teams with Fairmont losing in a great effort 47-40. The season was quite successful with the players managing to stay pretty healthy Mike Schepers was injured in the Silver Creek game and did not return until Fairmont played McCool. Dan Bures stepped into that position. P. J. O'Cortnor showed great improvement and Darcy Moul. Kim Lowe and Brent Reed did well in the offensive backfield. Mark Quick had a good year at QB. Mike Scheil did an excellent job at center and defensive tackle. He was honorable mention all Conference at those positions. Defensively, Darcy Moul was honorable mention all Conference lin- ebacker and an important part of the defense Shane Jantzi also contributed greatly to the defensive effort. Bonnie is determined Dawn sets her goal Sheri gives her all The Fairmont Volleyball Team began their 1983-84 season in a different conference. The Crossroads Conference, playing one game per week. Stumbling into the season, FHS took its first losses to Exeter, Polk, and Rising City. On September 23. Homecoming, the Tigers battled fiercely for 116 hours to upset the Hampton Hawks, 4-15. 17-15. 15-13. marking the first of four straight wins. FHS then went on to defeat Hordville and Marquette in the regular season. In the CRC tournament, FHS upset McCool Junction. 15-8. 15-9, then lost to Rising City, 2-15. 6-15. After the tournament, the Tigers travelled to Bradshaw for another thrilling 3-set ballgame defeating Bradshaw. 7-15, 15-2, 16-14. FHS ended its season losing four straight ballgames to Giltner. McCool Junct., Benedict and Daven- port in the district tournament. Dawn Radke received honorable men- tion in the Crossroads Conference. The Tigers were unfortunately, a bit disappointed this year. The Tigers 7-9 season was highlighted by victories over eventual conference tourney champ Giltner and Football Power Marquette. The Tigers placed 4th in the conference race with a 6-4 conference record. Our schedule was not without quality opponents. Seven of our opponents made it to their District Finals; 4 to a Regional and 2 to a State Tourney. Mark Quick was selected to the AU-Conference second team. He will play in the all-star game. Mike Schepers was selected as an alternate. Good Bye seniors. It was a good 4 years in all. The Fairmont Tigers girls basketball team began their season with a loss to the Milligan Roosters, and proceeded to beat Hordville on the Tigers' homecourt. Fairmont played Hampton at home, shooting their best team percentage (41%) but still came short of a win. 39-40. Fairmont played Exeter at home where the Eagles had trouble with the Tigers aggressive full-court press and the half-time score was Fairmont - 17. Exeter - 18. Exeter went on to beat Fairmont. FHS lost to Marquette at home where one of Marquette's players committed a flagrant foul and was disqualified from the game. FHS continued to work hard defensively, but the team shooting percentage wasn't good enough to beat Dorchester or Giltner. At home. FHS beat NE Lutheran and then lost to Shickley. FHS scored the most points of the season (47) at McCool. In the CRC tournannent. Fairmont was paired up against Hampton; Revenge was in the air. FHS controlled the tempo of the game and sneaked by the Hawks. 42-40. The next foe was Rising City, a team the Tigers hadn't played yet. It was a close game during the first half and a last-second, buzzer shot by Julie Jennett from half-court tied the game with 14 all. FHS ended their tournament play by losing a tough battle to Rising City. FHS went on to defeat Bradshaw in regular season play. 30-28. the highlight of the girls season at FHS. The Tigers then lost to Rising City. Benedict and Polk in regular season play. In districts, FHS lost to Shickley the class D-1 state championship team. In summary, the FHS girls basketball team worked very hard throughout the season on dribbling, shooting, passing, and teamwork. Maintaining a positive, winning attitude through a 4-13 season was always the ultimate goal. Four of the team's losses went to state champions. BOYS TRACK 1984: The Boys track squad, though small in number, was big in quality of participation. The Tigers were third in the Conference and District track meets. They also placed third in the Doane Indoor Meet and the Hampton Invite. The boys placed first in the Deshler Invitational. New records were established in the 300 I.M. Tim placed third in the long jump. GIRLS TRACK 1984: The 1984 Girls track team had many new faces in the program. Each meet saw improvement for the new and young tracksters. With the fine leadership of the seniors, the girls were in the middle of the standings at the conclusion of each meet. Spirit week included various activities ranging from Tie-Up Day to carrying stuffed animals and wearing orange and black. The Senior float entitled Compute a Victory” was the winning float. The royalty and attendants followed tradition by dancing the royalty dance at the dance held by the Pep Club, following the football game. May 20th. at 4:00 p.m. Twenty-two seniors were in the graduating class of 1984. The invoca- tion was given by Father Schmitt. Valedictorian and Salutatorian speeches were given by Bonnie Galusha and Albert Simacek. Jr. Toby Boss, the Social Studies teacher at FHS. gave the commencement address. Mr. Pieper presented the graduating class to the school board president. Carl Schmidt, who then awarded diplomas to the class. The class colors were Cameo Pink and Empire Grey and the class flower was the white rose. Their motto was: The past is our heritage The present is our respon- sibility. The future is our challenge.
